Love your reactions! I love this song to death, but if your looking for other metal classics, I would recommend Megadeth - Holy Wars, Judas Priest - Painkiller and Slayer - Raining Blood
I have been a Metallica fan since the beginning. I find both of your ratings on their songs to be fair, accurate, and enlightening. I enjoy the technical and artistic point of view of the soundtrack to my life! I am a consumer of music. Hearing about the technical and artistic struggles these guys must have gone through making this music is fascinating to me. Thank you both for sharing your knowledge and giving us fans a glimpse of the beautiful.
definitely need to check out Welcome home (sanitarium) its follows in a similar vain to this and fade to black with an incredible build throughout and a profoundly dark story
I've been into metal for over 25 years and it was always my favorite genre. Classic metal, thrash, death metal, black metal, power metal, I love all sub genres, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy beautiful music or other genres. I love rock, country, blues and classical as well. Boston, ZZ Top, ACDC, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe bonamassa, Rush, are some of my favorite rock and blues artists. Even some modern rock like Shinedown and Massive Wagons I like a lot. I grew up listening to and love country. Hank Sr, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Billy Joe Shaver...even Brad Paisley and Johnny Hiland with their badass chickin' pickin'. Always loved classical, too. Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 is one of my favorite pieces of all time. I'm just a music lover in general, but metal is what really touches my soul and gets me motivated.
In 1988, when this album dropped, James Hetfield was only 25 years old meaning he wrote it at like 23 or 24. That is simply amazing because how many 23-25 year Olds today could write not just the music to this, but the lyrics as well? Just simply AMAZING!
And already made 4 amazing albums in only 5 years.… ”Justice” was also #6 on the Billboard chart, without even releasing a single video (ONE video came later)
Beautiful is a very common term my guy. It’s music like you said . Just as much as anything is . The “ normal music listener “ probably thinks of metal as something you can’t be calling beautiful , but when you listen and don’t go by the judgment you know it’s beautiful just like any other genre
IMO…anytime a non-metal head can listen to a metal song, appreciate the artistic excellence and work put into creating this type of music, cheers 🥂 sir. Thank you and keep it up. 👍👍
You are slowly but surely realizing the otherworldly talents and genius, that these guys posess. You have many Metallica-bangers ahead of you and they will impress you 🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
To get more context on the song, I would recommend watching the official music video which includes clips of a movie infused into the song to add context on the songs origins. The movie being used is called Johnny got his gun. It is honestly really sad to see the official video only because of how well it is put together, it creates a truly moving narrative. You don't have to do a video on it, but you should watch it if you get a chance.
Yeah, and justice for all is probably the best overall album, certainly from metallica, and possibly in all rock/metal music. My favorite metallica songs are harvester of sorrow and the thing that should not be.
"Holy SHIT!" "What the fuck!?!" "Oh my God" "genius" "Awesome" - Yeap these were all the EXACT same emotions we all had as teenagers in the 80's. We knew great when we heard it also.
Proof that Metallica can make anyone’s head start to bang. Always good to see non metal head music lovers find 80’s thrash. Metallica wise: Unforgiven (could do the trilogy) will impress you. Other metal to dip your toes into. Try Testament, especially The Ballad (from the album Practice what you Preach) and The Ritual and/or Return to Serenity (from the album The Ritual). And also…Machine Head. Start off with Sail in to the Black (album: Bloodstone & Diamonds) then go epic with Clenching the fists of dissent (album: The Blackening, you should listen to all of this masterpiece 😂) Welcome to the metal family 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great reaction! Also to note, many hardcore or original Metalica fans considered Metalica "selling out" with this song. And the bass is barely present in the mix. Lars and James especially were having a difficult time accepting Jason and his contribution to the group.
Yeah check out the video from Alex here on RU-vid with One if Jason did the mix and you can hear the bass as it should have originally been mixed. I recommend checking it out in your spare time. Jason didn’t deserve the flack the boys gave him. He was a talented guy.
Well put! A lot of comments fail to recognize that these guys were in their mid twenties and really had no idea how to go forward without their buddy, Cliff. Their immaturity and the massive challenge of moving on without Cliff is obviously why they mistreated Jason and fortunately for Jason, he gets it.
People starting labeling them as sellouts with the Ride the Lightning album because the first track opened with an acoustic guitar and because of having a ballad, FADE TO BLACK not only be on there but also because it started acustically. And of course, now Fade has become one of their most, if NOT most, popular and most well loved somg!
People were saying they sold out before this. Fade to Black is when people first started complaining. The only thing Metallica sells out are arenas and stadiums.
Yes!!! Most reactors don't notice that the drums in the latter half of the song are mimicking guns. So crazy how quickly you picked that up! Also I have to say, for your next Metallica song, you could easily pick any song out of the first 4 albums that you haven't heard before, but I'd recommend Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Creeping Death, Harvester of Sorrow, Blackened, Battery, or Damage Inc. The Unforgiven trilogy is also a great set of songs
the solo for "The Unforgiven" from The Black Album is also one of Kirks best 🤘🏻 metal music is very beautiful and akin to classical, lots of hardcore metal musicians listen to and have been heavily influenced by classical along w/blues as well
Yes he has such a neat format for his videos. Good music and audio balance, great way of articulating himself, open minded, actually looks at the lyrics and looks up the song beforehand so he’s not clueless of what’s happening the entire time he’s listening, pauses accordingly to express himself without destroying the flow of the song, and I can keep going. He’s found a great way of doing this and I hope more and more people find his channel.
@@TheMusicKingdom The formula for RU-vid is rather simple, the more subs and likes a video has the more it will be bumped to the top of the results for what’s in the search bar. Also make sure to label your videos accordingly. Used key words such as band name, song title, reaction and review/analysis and encourage people to like and subscribe to help boost the channel on the platform.
99% of the time yes but Jelly Roll is one Black sheep of an artist that might break that stigma for you, go have a look at "Only & Love the Heartless", "Glitter" or" Smoking Section" from the live studio filmed version he did for his fans during the covid lockdown. Maybe just maybe an exception can start a list to change your mind.
watch the music video whether as a reaction or by yourself....its superb...and absolutely a punch to the gut.....also apparently the double bass drums in the climax represent the dots and dashes of Morse Code the subject of the song used by moving his head to ask his caretakers to kill him.
This is not just a reaction channel. This is a smart analysis of music in an artful way and the geek in me loves it. I firmly believe in a few months, you're gonna pull huge numbers. Excellent work. I promise I wont suggest on every video but... you gotta check out "Metropolis Part 1" by Dream Theater. Album version is perfect. And despite you saying you wanna do the album version, if you do Nightwish, I absolutely cannot stress enough that you have to do their 2013 Waken performance of "Ghost Love Score" because of their new vocalist and the energy and perfection live. *and not to break the 4th wall, but get thousands of new eyes on your channel from that song alone* Keep up what you do, its brilliant.
Alice in Chains - Rooster would be a song i'd love for you to break down. The lead vocalist from Alice in Chains is one of my personal favorite singers.
Review the Operation Mindcrime album by Queensryche..its beyond me to explain how good this album is.. from writing to production, the music and the vocals are incredible... you should really review the whole album in one sitting but if that is beyond the realm of sanity..i would suggest you review ..suite sister mary...
You definitely made the right choice listening to the album version first. The music video is good, but I think all the dialog distracts too much from the music for someone who isn't already familiar with it.
I cant rememeber anything... I cant rememeber anything.... I cant rememeber anything... I cant rememeber anything... I cant rememeber anything... I cant rememeber anything...
1:38 Technically correct, although that award came on the heels of the utter debacle in 1989 which saw Jethro Tull beat out Metallica (among others) for "Best hard rock/metal performance". After being mocked by pretty much everybody in the music industry, The Recording Academy split it off into its own "metal" category for 1990 (and then gave the first _three_ of those awards to Metallica, up through 1992).
The irony is this album is notorious for horrific production decisions. Namely Lars dropping the bass down to an inaudible level. There are remixes out there restoring the bass and the album takes on a whole new life when mixed properly.
Song deserves a better score, and this Album is a Masterpiece. I was a kid When this song Dropped and it was a Huge Hit. Metallica is a Phenomenal band
This review in one second: 12:32 Btw, three suggestions for you: Megadeth - Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Judas Priest - Painkiller, Dream Theater - Take the Time. Thanks. This was fun.
Just discovered your channel, I am subscribed, you are fair in your critique, and I think you will be blown away by Metallica No Leaf Clover from S and M (San Francisco orchestra and Metallica) thing you will notice is that the harsh lyrics on the smooth side and happy on the rocking part
I could be wrong, but i think the guitar at the beginning is not acoustic, but clean tone electric. Electric guitar, but without overdriving the amplifiers.
Love your channel! However I believe you’re missing a vital point when “grading” composition. The CORE of heavy metal music are the basic power cords you deduct points for lack of intricate composition. I recommend maybe taking this into consideration when grading composition. Keep up the good work!
As a treat to you and your brother, I'm going to recommend a song so compositionally complex that it's included in the Sydney Conservatorium for Music's Composition Course. The song is And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, by Ne Obliviscaris. A progressive metal band out of Australia, they are a six piece band with a harsh vocalist, clean vocalist who also plays violin, a biological mutant hybrid of a machine gun and a metronome, and insanely talented guitarists and bassist. I highly recommend watching the Live in Colorado 2016 video because watching them play something so complex live is breathtaking, but I do understand you like to approach from the studio recording. That being said, I still think the Live in Colorado 2016 video is a better showcase of just how truly incredible this band is. Cheers
Their bassist, Cliff Burton, died way too young. He was the one who would take music theory classes and is responsible for the heavy classical influence on this album.
I'd recommend you to listen to something by judas priest, they are one of really big names on metal scene just like metallica or iron maiden. in my opinion best song to start with is the hellion + electric eye (these two should be listened together just like parabol and parabola by tool)
I wish they would re-record Cathedral Spires with Halford singing. I feel weird saying it, but that is one of their best songs. Tim Owens was incredible on that.
Every time I listen to the studio version of this I can’t help but hear and see the dialogue/soundscape/visuals from the official video, rolling around within the back of my mind. Such a powerful and thought provoking piece of art, across the board, with this track. Great reaction. New sub added 🤘
Just to think how young they were to write such an exceptional song . I think after you go all the way and get to the deep cuts Metallica going to blow your mind . I think “ the unforgiven” and “ disposable heroes” “ sad but true “ will be a great reaction.
There is also a minor to major key change from the chorus into that beautiful section u liked and also when changing into the heavy part towards the end there is a also a minor to major harmony that kicks in right before it goes heavy as hell and as a composer myself i find that very soothing to my ear. It also reflects the differnt moods generated within the composition to express a since of hope or in this case absence from the condition of existance in hopes of an secape into the anger and hopelessness of not having a choice. Great reaction and annilisation!!
You gotta listen to the whole album. Great reaction. And I agree. It’s a beautiful piece of music. My all time fave metal song. No my all time fave song EVER.
Excellent review! Now if you haven't heard Iron Maiden's musical interpretation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" do so posthaste. Then once you pick your jaw off the floor listen to "Empire Of The Clouds.". It's a 17-minute musical opus about the tragic flight of the British airship "R-101." And for a more modern band you MUST take a deep dive into Alter Bridge. Trust me. You will LOVE epic AB songs like "Words Darker Than Their Wings" (their live performance at The Royal Albert Hall with The Parallax Orchestra must be heard to be believed) and their modern hard rock anthem "Blackbird" which I personally consider to be like the 21st century "Free Bird." Thank me later. I'm a happy new sub for you. Kudos to the YT algorithm once again.
If you want songs that either showcase the newer side of Metallica or songs that are stronger vocally, I would suggest Bleeding Me, Halo on Fire, The Day That Never Comes, and the 3 songs on the Unforgiven trilogy!
It was a very cool analysis of the song. Metallica is rough to grade I think. They made it with practically no radio airplay. They just had a special something about them, their live shows were amazing, and they really captured the feeling of their era which is something you wouldn't be able to truly grasp. I have to say, though. Giving "vocals" an entire category to bring the score down seems wrong to me. Metal is not graded that heavily on vocals by metalheads imo.
It wasn't the 1st to win in the metal category. The win in 1989 went that legend of Heavy Metal none other than Jethro Tull. Yes that was sarcasm , Jethro Tull was NEVER metal and barely hard rock and by 1989 were so far away from either that their inclusion in the category was laughable. So when they were announced the winner everyone was stunned . They gave the award to Metallica the year after as a make up.
Beautiful Pretty Fabulous . These words can also be applied to listening to Ronnie Jame Dio... ...or watching (and listening to) Lita Ford. You Can't Catch Me, because All the Fools Sailed Away.
Want to hear PERFECT and SOARING vocals from a metal band? Do yourself a favor and check out the perfomance of "Take Hold of the Flame" by Queensryche from the live performance in Tokyo, 1984. This was during the ENCORE, (after he had been wailing for over an hour), and it gets no better from a live performance. They were/are considered the thinking man's heavy metal band. Great lyrics, fantastic message, and the delivery will absolutely blow you AWAY!!!! You are just going to have to trust me on this one!!!
the expert needs to hear more guitar solos if he thinks kirks is one of the best he's ever heard, here's a couple to listen to: Frank Zappa "muffin man" live, Eddie Van Halen "eruption", Jimmy Page "Dazed and confused", Dime bag Daryl "cemetery gates", "the art of shredding", "floods". Jimi hendrix, all his songs. Ted Nugent "paralyzed", "stranglehold".
I'm new here, but I like your "studio first" approach, whch I share. This tune is genius in so many ways but very disturbing in a way I don't think I'd heard from Metallica since "Trapped Under Ice". I'm sure you have tons of suggestions for more Metallica so I'll just give you three: *The Thing That Should Not Be* *Orion* *To Live Is To Die* Try *Diary Of A Madman* by Ozzy Osbourne... Gonna subscribe and journey with you a bit. Thanks S.W.
I always thought the fast riff was a machine gun riff too but having watched the film "Jhonny got his Gun" which the song is about ad also appears in the video for One. The riff is far more reminiscent and very similar to the Military drums rolling at the start of the film. I can highly reccomend watching the One video
Based on your experience, I highly suggest the song "Ki" by The Devin Townsend Project. I have been an gigging metalhead for about 30 years, but THAT song got my country music loving wife into Devin Townsend - a man who wrote a song that starts with a ballad, into dubstep, death metal, and ends in fairground music (and that's not a joke.) Ki however is NOTHING like that. My wife described it as an "eargasm".
Double down on Kirsten 1058's comment. Also yes I know I've asked it before but when are you going to check out some Pantera? You can't do metal without including Pantera. Thats like covering 80's pop without reviewing a Depeche Mode or Tears For Fears song lol. I still think "Cemetery Gates" is one you will enjoy as an introduction to their music. Also they were spot on in live performances. Had the honor of seeing them perform at Ozzfest 2000, not long after is when Dimebag was shot 😢.I still remember hearing that news. R.I.P. Dimebag Darrel and Vinnie paul....you were the real life bash em bros! None have ever or will ever do it like them again! Theres a concert in Moscow that Pantera played and so did Metallica that had something like 2 million people in attendance! You can catch those on youtube.... Epic🤘
Absolutely fantastic review/reaction!!! You are basically saying exactly what I thought about this song when it came out. This is my first video of yours that I’m watching. I’ve subscribed and now time to deep dive into the rest of your channel. Again, great job!
Fantastic song writing, great musicianship, but terrible production. Lars Ulrich (the drummer) has a phobia of bass, so he just had to turn it down all the way until you just couldn't hear it. And then another 5-6dB more, just to be certain you can't hear it XD
You should dip a toe into progressive metal and symphonic metal. They are sure to tickle your music theory fancy. Check out Dream Theater: the count of Tuscany. And Nightwish: Ghost Love Score: the 2013 live in Wacken version
If one thinks beatiful doesn't belong to Metal, just check out Death's Voice of the Soul, or dive into properly into Opeth, Insomnium or Swallow the Sun.
1:34 Um Actually, if you mean that One is the first *Metallica* song to win a Grammy for metal performance you would be correct. But Metallica was not the band to win the inaugural Grammy for best Metal Performance. In a move seen as a travesty made by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, they awarded the inaugural “Best Metal Performance” Grammy to…Jethrol Tull. For their album Crest of a Knave.
Hey man great review and I love the channel concept! Check out "The Day That Never Comes" which is a "newer" Metallica entry years after their glory days. I think you'll enjoy it!
Simply stating that One won a Grammy award is severely underselling it. The Best Metal Performance category was created explicitly because of One. At the 1989 Grammy Awards they introduced what would prove to be the first, last, and only award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental. This would also be the first Grammy Awards show Metallica was invited to perform at and the first time most people had ever heard Metallica. You have to understand the atmosphere in the 80's. Aside from a handful of enterprising stations, radio airplay was basically nonexistent for Metallica through their first four albums. Their corner of the Heavy Metal world existed outside the mainstream and not having their songwriting constrained by pop or radio standards is among the reasons these epic songs that have endured across these decades exist. Thrash Metal was still very new and very niche. As far as most were concerned at the time "Heavy Metal" was Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister. That would change when Metallica took the stage that night. One absolutely blew their minds as Metallica blew the roof off and brought the house down. And then it happened, the winner of the award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental was announced... and flute playing Jethro Tull took it home... to a chorus of boos. An audience full of people who before that night, who before about 10 minutes earlier even, had probably never heard of Metallica actually booed Jethro Tull for taking what they now considered to be Metallica's award. The following year they would split the award into separate two Hard Rock and Heavy Metal categories, though for the first three years the latter could just as easily have been named the Metallica award.
Fun fact: James didn't learn how to sing properly until recording of their 5th album. If you listen to isolated Fade To Black vocals you can hear a keyboard guiding his voice. By the time they were recording AJFA it was pretty blown out from not having proper technique. Some of the repeating vocal parts were copied and pasted.
Beautiful and pretty are perfect adjectives. So are 'frightenly descriptive'. At it's core, metal is heavily influenced by classical music. I think might be what you are equating it to? You should see it live.
Great video, if you want something a little heavier. Check out As the Palaces Burn by Lamb of God. Great southern power metal with bold riffs and drums and good meaning in the lyrics if you like the screaming vocals. I love them myself.
Metallica, Master of Puppets should be reacted to, if you haven't already done it. That song was inducted into the Library of Congress as being historically relevant.
The sad thing is, this is a horrible produced album. Even Metallica has said it's horribly produced. The reason is because of the death of Cliff. They were so upset, angry they basically put Jasons bass so low you can hardly or sometimes never even hear the bass guitar. One is also Metallica's 1st music video they released for MTV. there are 2 versions of the video. 1 video is the official with parts of Johny's got a Gun, and the other is the "Jam version"
Fun fact, the best metal albums generally come from bands when the members are around 20-30 yrs old. Most metal bands generally show incredible musicianship even on their debut album.
