Run for the hills, Tesla owners, the great unwashed hordes of CCS electric vehicles are heading for your Superchargers! At least a handful of us were, on the final day of February, as the EV leader launched non-Tesla Supercharging in New York and California. In our Hyundai IONIQ 5, we made the trek across Massachusetts to one of several CCS-equipped Superchargers near Albany, NY.
Only a handful of Superchargers have the "Magic Dock" solution so far -- a rather grandiose name for a Tesla-to-CCS adapter locked to a regular Supercharger post -- with eight locations across upstate New York and a couple more in Northern California. However, the potential implications of rapid retrofits to the most expansive EV charging network in North America are clear: if Tesla is so inclined, it can change the public charging landscape in the US and Canada almost overnight.
So how did it go and will we be ditching our complimentary Electrify America plan in favor of Elon's magical mission? Watch the first seven minutes for the former and the second seven minutes for the latter!

Tesla owners, how do you feel about the Supercharger network starting to open up? Non-Tesla owners, will this become your go-to option if the Magic Dock solution expands nationwide? Or does another network remain your favorite> If so, which one and why? Let us know, down below!

As a Tesla owner, in Europe. This is great news! People notice how easy living with a Tesla is, and on the plus side for us this means lower and lower charging price for Tesla owners as more non Teslas charge there. I’m not worried about waiting in line, since if a supercharger station is filled with non Teslas and I am navigating there in my Tesla, the other owners get a notification to disconnect and leave space asap.

Don’t love it to be honest. I bought a Tesla for the supercharger network. I don’t need to wait to charge because a bolt is pulling 22 kW because Chevy sucks and can’t have preconditioning. Charge non-Teslas at least 3x the price.

I'm fine with non-Teslas charging but for future builds and retrofits, Tesla really should consider charge port location and accessibility. That should actually be a requirement for the federal money. Towing would also benefit from more flexible charge configurations.

Thanks, Steve! I'll be trying to swing by one of my "local" unlocked Superchargers soon. There are a number of issues that I think people didn't expect to see when using non-Tesla EVs on Superchargers, but they shouldn't really be all that surprising. Luckily, none of those issue are really that big of a deal (other than some EVs blocking multiple stalls). My biggest gripe right now is that it appears that all of the unlocked (and soon to be unlocked) Superchargers are in regions that already have decent high-power CCS coverage. The Superchargers I'm most interested in seeing unlocked are hundreds of miles from the nearest public CCS charger.

Looking forward to seeing your test, Eric. Looks like the Bolt handles the system and stall placement well... another bonus of its size and front end design. I cut a bunch of thoughts out of this on charger placement and potential expansion, which I think will become a Coffee + Kilowatts discussion next week. But you're spot on with the existing locations, as this video showed a little. EVolve NY/Shell Recharge is 20 miles in either direction of this one with well placed, well-lit stations and EVgo has an excellent presence around Albany, NY. Meanwhile the former DCFC desert of the NY Thruway is awash with options, including the new service plaza stalls that I mentioned (Applegreen Electric, so expensive and untried, but very convenient). And the Tesla locations are in some odd spots, like the casino in Verona, NY. So it's not much use to us at the moment, but if they opened up something in northern Maine or New Hampshire, it would make EV travel to/from Canada easier overnight. Anyway, excited to hear your thoughts once you hit a Magic Dock site.

@@plugandplayEV Yes, there's a lot to consider about this new implementation, but I think you and I are likely to agree on most points (coming from similar background experiences). I don't expect the Bolt EV to have much of a problem with cable reach for the reasons you mentioned, but I do have one of the original Bolt EVs with the "cable support" issue. It will be interesting to see whether that results in any issues. The other aspect that I find interesting is the charging speeds on E-GMP vehicles. In theory, the Superchargers are rated for 1,000 V, so only dispensing at 400 V rates is a bit disappointing. At this point, paired CPE 250 sites are a much better backup for E-GMP drivers than the Superchargers, and in California, the pricing is nearly identical (around 50 cents per kWh across most sites). If the rumors are true, the Cybertruck will be 800 V, so we could see a fast rollout of Tesla's V4 Superchargers with longer cables and 1000 V supply. That would help everyone.

Charged Mach-e Select AWD at Placerville, CA Supercharger with Magic Dock. Chargers were orientated parallel to stalls so no issues with cable length. 102kW. But to avoid blocking, had to park in rightmost side of site in stall adjacent to Supercharger unit where no Tesla would go.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear it went well there. I was thinking that Tesla drivers also have a role to play at some of these sites, by getting used to using the rightmost stall as a last option. Keeping that one open benefits both groups, as it encourages CCS drivers to get used to heading for that one first and reduces the chance of a middle stall being used/two posts being taken up.

Steve - just for giggles, I drove up to the closest (to me) SC location last night, which is 16 miles from my house. 8 chargers, and it was mostly occupied at 6:30. It’s a freeway friendly location in the middle of metro Detroit, so likely gets lots of use by Tesla owners, let alone the CCS cars that will stop by - should this one get updated. That magic dock is a nice idea, and if at least one charger at all locations is converted - with a longer cord too, please, that opens up CCS a lot in US. Sorry that you weren’t able to get the charger to continue running, but that bug will work out in time, I’m sure. A good video, pointing out the perceived pluses and minuses. Cheers!

Thanks Dennis! It's funny, we have tens of sites that would be really interesting to see open up around Boston, especially with the recent surge of V3 Superchargers in metro areas. That has completely changed over the past 18 months, before which suburban charging was dominated by CCS. However, like the site you describe, these Superchargers are all full of commuters and opportunity charging Teslas, so I think there would be more vocal opposition if those locations fully opened up to the CCS hordes. Interesting times!
@KatAdair

Longer cords are a terrible option. Perhaps non-Tesla EVs can carry their own special extension cord? Anytime there is a long cord (or hose) for anything, nobody ever rolls it back up, and it gets damaged and dirty.
@KatAdair
@KatAdair Год назад
@@plugandplayEV and yes…vocal opposition. If it’s a busy Tesla Supercharger that’s almost always full, having non-Tesla vehicles take up TWO charging spaces, as shown in this video, would be a real problem. It’s not only that, but because the onboard route planner doesn’t know that these vehicles are taking up two spaces, it will not reflect an accurate availability in our navigation system. Not just griping, but it’s a serious concern for a lot of us who paid a premium price to have access to a reliable supercharger system, and now face the possibility of long wait times and unavailable chargers.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
@@KatAdair That's a Tesla problem. You want to be a public EV charging network, organize sites in such a way that the full breadth of EVs are accommodated. Tesla doesn't agree with you on longer cables being terrible, as V4 Supercharger development shows. There are plenty of solutions to the Tesla limitations currently on display... if the company listens and adapts, they might just win our business, as well as substantial government funding.

@@plugandplayEV but there’s existing infrastructure, the same infrastructure we paid for when we bought our vehicles. On a recent round trip from California to Missouri, I used my Model Y and CCS adapter about 40% of the time. Usually when Superchargers located in the same are were Version 150kwh and I could get 200 kWh from EA stalls. I never charged at CCS STATIONS if ANY CCS vehicles were waiting.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
It's not a common sight around MA, possibly because V3 Superchargers are abundant and the price per kWh isn't that high in Mass. But I do see Teslas on EA units and the more the merrier, to my mind. All paying customers. But your consideration of the limited resources is appreciated and I'd hope most CCS model owners will respect Superchargers the same way, using the most suitable stalls first and only charging for as long as they need to before freeing up the stall.
@KatAdair
@KatAdair Год назад
@@plugandplayEV Judging by the enthusiasm of everyone putting up videos of themselves charging at superchargers, I think they will try to charge at our chargers without thinking through issues like taking up two stalls. We as Tesla owners have some supercharging courtesies that we adhere to RELIGIOUSLY…for example, skipping a space on 150 kW chargers if possible because it splits the voltage between the two cars if you park side-by-side. “Rules” that are ingrained in our community. I am not sure that non-Tesla owners will understand these guidelines. I only pray that after the initial novelty that these drivers experience will be offset by the high price, and they will realize it’s cheaper to charge at home or other EV chargers, and they realize that the superchargers don’t charge their cars as quickly as expected. One guy’s video showed him EXTREMELY excited about charging at 24 kW…a Tesla can charge at over 250 kW with the Level 3 charger. If their cars are limited in speed, and then take hours to charge on our DC fast chargers where we might spend 10-25 minutes, it’s going to create a bottleneck. Sorry to be negative about this, but just trying to help others understand why we might not be happy about this.

I wouldn't take my CCS car to Tesla site generally, just like you don't see many Tesla's at CCS sites, but it's awesome for everyone to have a backup option when a site has issues. Right, no one's going to complain about having an extra charging option at any stage of their journey, whether it's a Tesla forced to use EA or a non-Tesla having to figure out the best way to use Supercharger stalls. It's going to be messy for a while to come and we'll clearly need far more Superchargers retrofitted for this to be considered a CCS-enabled "network", but the early signs are positive and it's fun to see the two ecosystems align.

Europe was obviously a good test bed and should iron out some of the model-specific hitches, which might be why we're seeing an overall very positive ratio of those that charge smoothly vs. fails like this one. Then a longer cable for V4 addresses the general challenge of many CCS EVs taking up two stalls to get a charge. It will be really interesting to see how much effort Tesla commits to retrofitting V3 stalls when a better solution is on the horizon.

I drove by the local V3 Supercharger on Sunday (we have 2 x V2 charger sites in town also) to see if they had install the Magic Dock on these ones (no Magic Dock found). I was surprised to see the site was nearly full (6 of the 8 stall used). The Tesla owners gave me a "look" in my Bolt, so I can only imagine if my Bolt was plugged in then the site would have been 100% full (since I would have to taken up two charging sports). I feel charging at Supercharges for none Tesla's should be a plan B option if possible and only the first option if no other chargers are available in the vicinity. In Iowa we are lucky that we have quite a few CCS sites. It is still a great thing to have more redundancy in the future by having Supercharges available also.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Yes, with the higher price and short cables forcing sub-optimal positioning for many CCS models, I think it's more about redundancy than requirement at this point. Looking at most of the places that CCS options are in short supply, they're going to be in sparsely populated areas and the Supercharger is unlikely to be packed, as we see in the more built up areas of California, New York, and other areas where Tesla might opportunity charge/use Superchargers in the absence of home charging. So where Tesla/CCS is the only option, I wouldn't expect to see too many delays or annoyed owners.

This has been the same sort of experience that the European CCS Superchargers have been seeing once Tesla opened their network there. Some cars work, some cars don’t. Oddly enough, Dave on Out of Spec was able to charge his GV60, but did have to move chargers once before it would work. I wonder if this is something else where the early 2022 egmp owners get the short stick. Personally I own a Model 3 and an Ioniq5. I’m definitely happy that I’ll eventually have the Supercharger network as a backup option once it opens up here on the West Coast, but between the high pricing and the severe speed limitation for 800V cars (since the Superchargers are incapable of 800V, egmp cars are limited to either 100 or 150kw depending on who you listen to), I doubt it’ll be anything more than a back-up option for me when in the Ioniq5. Honestly, since I have a CCS adapter for my Model 3, the Supercharger network tends to be a secondary option anyway since Superchargers tend to be fairly expensive during daytime hours, even for Tesla owners. I’ll be curious to see which locations they end up opening. We already know they aren’t planning to open all their Superchargers to CCS cars anytime soon (if ever). I’m guessing they won’t open any locations that are commonly over 80% occupied, although I don’t know anything about the locations they’ve already opened, so I may have already been proven wrong. Tbh, there is only one near me that I’m hoping they’ll open up soon, and that’s the Hines, OR SC. There is literally nowhere to fast charge along that route from Bend, OR all the way to Boise, ID (more than 300 miles). If you want to go between those two points (which are both decently sized cities) in a non-Tesla EV, you have to take about a 120 mile detour in order to have any charging options. Although, they did just open a huge SC install in Sutherlin, OR (like 50 chargers) and although there is an EA within walking distance from it, it only has 4 chargers and is routinely full with a queue during travel times with no other options nearby, so having that one open may be nice too.

Travel areas with minimal CCS presence seem like a smart expansion for the Magic Dock solution. They're unlikely to be extremely busy with Tesla traffic in the more remote parts, so CCS drivers using them wouldn't be especially disruptive, but it would be hugely valuable to broader EV adoption and show Tesla filling gaps where no-one else has gone. Seems like a win-win, but we'll have to see how the pilot goes and whether they really want to pursue this with V3 locations, or will hold off for V4 and tie those to the NEVI funds.

Maybe the car wasn’t truly in a prepped state to receive a charge. No normally in the EV6 it doesn’t matter for this on/off state. But possibly in this case it matters. The one place where I’ve seen it matter in the EV6 is on a level 2 Tesla mobile charger using the Lectron adapter. Then if the car is off the charging won’t start. However if you cycle the power to on then off the charging will start. Without them we would be no where near as far along as we are today. But I agree Tesla SC Network is a good plan C at this point. We tripped back from Florida and arrived home last night. No hiccups, no charger issues.....until Northern Ohio! Again the issue of only placing one DCFC in a location was the issue. Arrived there to find a Q Tron plugged in at 32% and insisting on charging to 100% before moving!!!! Absolutely 0 issues from Southern Ohio all the way to Florida and on the way down we did a long detour around Atlanta through the Smokey Mountains National Park...had an awesome trip. 5 years from now I am sure we will all look back and laugh at some of the issues we deal with now! Charging rate was slower than ideal, as typical for the ID.4’s with a winter-cold battery and no pre-DCFC conditioning possible. Overall, once I figured out how to position to the v3 chargers, it went well. Hope Tesla figures out where the issue is for Ioniq5’s soon!! Hopefully the Buffalo Charging R/D group for Tesla sees from the network side what didn’t work for you and gets a mod up. While a neat solution, Magic Dock doesn't address many of the site and hardware limitations for non-Tesla charging. It sounds like V4 solves most of the challenges and should be the real catalyst for truly opening up Supercharger sites that justify the NEVI funds flowing their way.

Tesla has been opening sites at smaller towns in the Ontario away from the main highways. Good for tourism and local Tesla owners. We've had a Tesla site at a hotel beside the 401 since 2013. Funding should only be for the newly-built NEVI sites, but it sounds like the deal with Tesla was specific given the need to open up a software-locked system and accommodate a different connector. So, it's not impossible that they got some kind of incentive for immediately retrofitting V3 sites for CCS. This could also just be a good faith move that allowed them to signal intent around Investor Day, while kicking off a pilot program that gets them some data on use by CCS models without significantly disrupting the Supercharger network as a whole.

Magic Dock retrofits at either of the Supercharger sites serving those routes would be a huge deal. That said, I'm not certain Tesla will be the one opening up truly remote locations (i.e. those away from highways and metro areas). For me, that will be either state level initiatives (like EVolve NY in this video) or the Rivian Adventure Network, which I have to assume will open to all EVs at some point. Drat…! Sorry to hear that the Magic Docks bawked at your Ioniq 5. What's odd is that I've seen a GV60 use them just fine, which has the very same drivetrain. Hmmm. Well… there are bugs to squash, obviously. I don't know how keen I am on these Magic Docks anyway. Seems to me that Tesla needs to simply SELL those docks to non-Tesla owners, perhaps even with an extension cord, and then enable any and all Superchargers to handle them. After all, they sell a CCS-to-Tesla adapter. Why not a Tesla-to-CCS adapter? Would make much more sense.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Yes, it's software-related and somewhere closer to the Tesla side than Hyundai, from what I'm hearing. But the bug is identified and the two are talking, according to Hyundai engineers, so hopefully that will shake out soon. I think you're right about the adapter as the best way to roll out wider access quickly, but I don't think that's what Tesla wants. That would mean they lose control of which locations are now open to everyone and could easily overwhelm Superchargers in high-use areas like California. Rolling out Magic Dock to select sites gives them the time to test, revise, and open things up in waves, which in turn prevents Tesla owners from turning against the move en masse because this approach has much less of an impact on their daily use.
@Yanquetino
@Yanquetino Год назад
@@plugandplayEV Yes, Tesla has always wanted to maintain strict control. Funny how they've had no problem tapping into others' networks with their CHAdeMO and CCS adapters, but allow reciprocal access…? Naw…! Nonetheless, they could still maintain control with purchasable Tesla-to-CCS adapters (like the "Magic Dock"), since it's all handled via over-the-air software anyway. Just post for any Supercharger site on the map whether the units have also been programmed to accommodate CCS -just like they post how many units there are, how many are available, if there's a wait time, etc. They could then open them up a few at a time, little by little, to still maintain control over the transition. A lot of people somehow think the Ioniq 5 is to blame for these issues, and maybe it’s because it is 800V. The fact is the Ioniq 5 charges perfectly well at all 400V chargers in Japan, and there are many different ones. So clearly Tesla is to blame. Would anyone be surprised if they gave a shit whether actually any other EVs can successfully use their chargers? They are just doing it because they have to. The other point people forget is that 800V EVs are optimized for 800V charging, not 400V charging. The Ioniq 5 can take in only about 250A, so with 400V you won’t get much above 100kW. That is not exactly super. So why bother with Tesla chargers in the first place…
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
I think blame in this scenario is unproductive. The bottom line is that opening up sites to CCS models means that Tesla and manufacturers need to work together to understand how the car is speaking to the charger and ensure that system works smoothly for drivers. It's the same challenge for every public CPO, with Tesla having a slight advantage in that they aren't using third party hardware from multiple vendors, so they know exactly what's happening on that side. This is also only one model out of perhaps 30-40 that have successfully charged with Telsa this week. @@plugandplayEV not the tesla chargers fault.

Bottom line: 8 failed stalls on 250kW Tesla Supercharger via app. Drive 20 miles down the road to EVgo 350kW charger and immediately get 200kW plus with Autocharge. If it eventually works, Supercharger is plan C for our travel 🤷‍♂️

Very easy, for me.

Magic dock adapter should be sold to CCS public so we can find a longer cable for charging correctly at Superchargers. Tesla should also sell longer cables to public to help this work out properly.

It does show they could have done this whenever they wanted. The Magic Dock is just a fancy term for the reverse adapter to the CCS-to-Tesla that has been out for more than a year. Pretty clear they want to limit the roll out and control the process based on receiving the federal funds they're after.

As a Tesla owner we can see all see your frustration with the charging network and how they don’t care. Not to say we’re excited but it also shows you all what kind of company Tesla is, and that is that they care and they see your headaches over the lack of caring of the network and that’s why they are opening up their network…

This is the most trouble I've had with any charge attempt in three years now. Not to say they won't address it, but there's no customer support line and my in-law's experience with Tesla service communication on their Model 3 hasn't been great. In any case, I'm glad the network is expanding but see no reason to use it as anything other than a plan C for our travels, at this stage.
