A simple to build 30" fun little plane made entirely of Dollar Tree foamboard, packing tape, and hot glue. Easy to fly and capable of basic aerobatics, probably a good second plane for newbies. Takes about 2-3 hours to build start to finish.
Specifications:
length: 30"
wingspan: 30"
empty weight: 460g (16oz)
AUW with 2200mAh 3s pack: 650g (23oz)
wing chord: 6 1/2" total
tail surfaces chord: 4" total
horizontal stabilizer span: 14"
vertical stabilizer height: 6"
desired approximate CG location: 10" aft of fuselage nose, corresponding to 25% of wing chord
wing location, leading edge: 8" aft of fuselage nose
(*recommend placing wing at or behind this position*)
powerplant: 200+/- watts, 1000kV to 1400kV, 8-9" prop, 3.8-6 pitch
See my other videos for techniques to build the wing, fuselage, and tail section. Nearly all information needed to build this plane can be found in those videos.
Please let me know of any questions.

Thanks for the detail and easy to follow instructions. Me and some friends were doing this about 20 years ago, and now I am picking up the hobby again with my son and his friends. I probably destroyed about 87 foam planes flying them very aggressive and I would fly anywhere, around forests and in high winds. Many scratch build designs, and many different motor types and propeller selections.

I just maidened my noobtube. Only 1 click of trim of left aileron and it was coasting straight as an arrow. I am a little underpowered with a tunigy park 450 as I had to fly at about two-thirds throttle. Using an eflite 25 amp esc and a turnigy 2200mah on a 9x6 prop. Everything felt a little warm after 8 min flight but not hot. I built 6 inch wing with 1.5 ailerons and tail section built exactly like you said except I angled vert and hor. stab slightly just for looks. I ended up putting dowel rods thru tube to rubber band the wing on for smaller travel size. Thanks for the great instructions.

I need to thank you for the knowledge that I have gained from this and all of your other videos. Thru you teachings I’ve not only been able to build, and fly my own models and change things on the fly, with some knowledge of where to start from. I’ll get them together and get some pictures for you all. And again, …. thank you so much. Keep on flying,

Hello Ed and fellow builders. I'm Ron an avid large scale RC helicopter pilot. Been building and flying fixed wing model aircraft for years. But got away from fixed wing in favor of egg beaters. On my 3rd practice sheet tape covering. Made 2 - 30" tubes and a 6" cord Armin wing. Working on Control surfaces hinges now. My first Noob tube will be an Ugly tube but I'm sure my workmanship will improve. Will build a J*Scott a Peace Drone and of course the 4 motor over the winter. I'm not only learning to build but doing a little drafting of my own. Creative Genius at it's finest Ed! Really Thank you. Ron

Hey Ed, Just came in from flying the NOOB TUBE. 30" wing, 30" tapered nose, fusleage, 1 5/8" inside cross section "just" big enough to fit a 2250 lipo powering a 2212-6 motor, 6x4 prop. Winds 13 mph gusting 21 mph. Flat out its doing close to ??? mph ground speed. What fun! This is my new favorite all weather airplane. Thanks!

Thanks to Tom in the club I belong to I've discovered you're RU-vid videos on building foam board planes and am amazed at what you've done. Tom has built a few a they fly so well I'm inspired to try my hand at building one myself. Work is really inspiring and I thank you for sharing it with the world on RU-vid. I'm in my mid-60s and just passed my instructor monitored solo test on nitro planes and have also flown electric foam planes so the idea of building your designs is very appealing. Thanks again!

You deserve all the praise you receive here and on RCGroups (where I found you). As long as I have been enjoying RC, I have always tried to help people get into the hobby as low cost as possible, and you simply can't get better than this. I am going to build this really soon to get back into the hobby after a few years away. *How is the slow flight characteristics? No sneaky tip stalling? *Could this act as a stable platform for aerial video/photography? hanks again for all contributions!

I want to use these ideas as much as possible to design an Aircraft, but maybe a little prettier - more streamlined!! 😉 And with Landing Gear. I enjoy the Takeoffs and Landings as much as the Flying... Again, thanks for your contributions to the Hobby! Carmine ✈🚂🚙

Well done, you already fixed it. My bad for not saying so. You can always put in some downthrust (and side thrust, if you're a perfectionist) to counter those tendencies. Mine is also about 3 degrees down.

Thank you so much for a great build. I am new RC hobbyist and understood all well except listed below. PLEASE PLEASE explain installing of motor at an angle on right and tilting downward from top. 1. Does it have to be always on right plus motor turning anti clockwise looking from front? 2. Does it apply to all kind of model planes? 3. Does degree of an angle has to be exact as specified or can be approximate? 4. Motor inward on right side plus tilt downward from top? Explanation for above would be a great knowledge for new RC hobbyists and appreciated. THANKS.

Hi, I just built one out of the 'european' foam board. It required some modification because this foam board does not bend like the american stuff. It flew great! With a wingspan of only 27 inches, the roll rate is insane :) Thank you for a very good design and for sharing it with us.

Good call, a longer wing will make this plane float longer and fly easier. Ideally you would stretch the fuselage a bit too but you can get by. I recommend making the horizontal and vertical stabilizers about 30% larger to compensate for the larger wing. The wing location will probably be a little bit further forward, but be sure to get everything in place and do a balance test before fixing the wing. Or use an adjustable fixation like rubber bands.

I think that is an awesome idea. In fact, if you send me some findings with regards to the diameter of the fuselage tube, performance, any other observations, then I would be glad to recommend a NoobTube variant which accepts the FliteTest power pod. I have thought about this very thing a lot, just never done the work. I think at least tapering the fuselage, or making it narrower as you say, would make it a very nice combo.

@ExperimentalAirlines Have you tried landing gear? If so, what do you recommend? I'm thinking the best setup would be light but proportional (1.5-2-in) foam wheels on wire attached under the motor mount with a tack affixed under the back of the fuselage to act as a skid.

Thank-you EA, I have been all over your channel, spent the afternoon taking notes, and watching. Gravitated towards the Axon and Armin Wing series naturally. So the the 5 degree angle (off 90) on the motor mount is a starting place to produce this intersection of the wing at 30 % of chord eh? Good to know. I will get that into the mix.
@ExperimentalAirlines
@ExperimentalAirlines 11 лет назад
Honestly I would spring for another $3 for a second servo and a Y-harness for your ailerons. You can get by with a single servo but it's a lot of extra work to trim the ailerons correctly with the pushrods. If you did, I would recommend putting the servo over the top of the wing with pushrods over each wing, over the top.

Probably, give it a try. You would have to move the wing back some to compensate for the change in CG, or make the nose longer and put the battery way up front.

On this plane I use the OrangeRX receivers from HobbyKing, with a satellite receiver whenever possible. I wouldn't use these on my favorite expensive planes but for $6 or so you can't beat 'em for light foamies like this. That's assuming you have the DSM2 transmitter, though the Futaba OrangeRX clone may be good too, just costs more.

hey i am making a 44 inch long wing for my noob tube, so do i need to make any chaged to the fuselage? or do i need to place the wing some where else?
@ExperimentalAirlines
@ExperimentalAirlines 11 лет назад
In the default tractor design the battery is pretty far forward too. If you put a 2-3 oz motor and an ESC in the back trust me the CG will move way back, so you'd need to move the wing back. If by 3 amp you mean 3000mAh then that's a hell of a big battery for a plane this size. I would definitely use a larger overall wing at least.
@ExperimentalAirlines
@ExperimentalAirlines 11 лет назад
It sounds like you are talking about something like the Axon setup, found on this channel. You could do a shorty Noob Tube pusher too, and yes I would direct the thrust angle down so that it about intersects the lower surface of the wing at about 30% chord. A longer fuselage would be more forgiving in this respect, but hey, it's cheap to build so try whatever comes to mind.

@ExperimentalAirlines
@ExperimentalAirlines 11 лет назад
Is it otherwise light foamboard you can peel the paper off of? At 30" it's a pretty nimble little plane, and would be just a bit more so at 27.5".
@ExperimentalAirlines
@ExperimentalAirlines 12 лет назад
@petedaws I use two-sided foam tape or two-sided duct tape (yes, it exists!) to place the wing initially. After verifying symmetry, location, and CG, I apply hot glue up inside the joint between the wing and fuselage. I recommend using a high-temperature glue gun if available, with any temp glue stick, just to improve adhesion. I suspect Gorilla Glue would work pretty well too. I think the hot glue thing seems corny too but I've yet to have a wing fall off.
@ExperimentalAirlines
@ExperimentalAirlines 11 лет назад
A 2-cell is usually pretty weak for many applications but if you have a 2300KV then it might be OK. Give it a try. Torque will be great, you just need to have a higher KV motor. As a rule a lower KV rating with higher cell count will give better overall performance. Only one way to know - try it out!

There are some specs I can't know from this but I would generally recommend a 3 cell for that. I think your prop might be a little too pitchy too if in fact it is a 6x8. Perhaps it's actually a 8x6 (8" diameter, 6" pitch distance), which would be pretty good for a 28mmx26mm motor, maybe don't run it full power the whole time. 8x3.8 or 8x4 would be perfect.
