Nope, is the latest film from writer, director and producer Jordan Peele. Its a science fiction tale with elements of suspense and horror, all genres Peele at this point is pretty well established in. Needless to say I was excited for his 3rd feature length film and not only do I think he delivered, I think its one of the best films of the year. Though critics and audiences seem to be pretty divided about the film, I personally think it deserves the praise. So let me tell you exactly Why Nope Deserves All The Hype
******
Movie: Nope. 2022. Universal Picture
Director: Jordan Peele
Writer: Jordan Peele
Starring: Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott and Keith David
******
Music Used: The Smith Mister - Clocks
Young Blaze - Nope Trailer Theme

I keep seeing people saying, "wtf was with gordy, what was that plot for" and I'm like guys, he literally witnessed people making a spectacle of an animal and it going insane and killing them. And then he did the same thing. It's about hubris. Like. The point here is that he, uniquely, should have known better when someone else might not have.
@itakeonmovies

You're 100 percent correct. I personally thought the scene was extremely effective, almost too effective in driving home one of the central themes. There are other examples such as the one you pointed out with Jupe trying to train the alien, or the commercial staff in the beginning saying things like tell the horse to move sideways etc. With this being said some people weren't making those connections I guess.

Its hard for me to judge a movie I enjoyed based off my first watch but the fact that this won't leave my brain says enough. When it comes to the pacing of the film though I think that's just up to personal preference and how forward moving you need your plot to be.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
I agree with you on both points. I think upon a 2nd view I may like it less, or even more. Hard to absorb everything in this film the first time. But to your 2nd point, the fact some of the imagery and moments still are so fresh in my head says enough. Also correct on the pacing preference. I personally find that that's just how Peele sets up for big moments. Something many of the great suspense and horror writers do well. ✊🏾

I do believe one of the themes is how credit is important. In the beginning they bring up the footage of the black horse rider and how the origins of it being filmed and who filmed it no one knows. Later on towards the end After the cameraman man gets all the footage (I forget his name) he decides “the public can’t see this perfection” and films himself getting killed by the alien, it seemed strange to me and then I thought about movies like Godzilla (2001, bare with me) Where after the main group survives running Godzilla and the …baby raptor Godzilla’s, The French operative destroys the video tape one of survivors made like: “OH YOU THOUGHT you was about to make money off of this, bad news buddy you still broke” …I paraphrase lol. In movies like these there is always someone who destroys the evidence or in treasure hunt movies where they somehow don’t keep the treasure(or they do and it’s cursed💀🙄).”And in the end it was the adventure that was the real prize and aren’t you guys glad you survived? 😃” Whenever we get those endings I am constantly wondering can I finally win AND eat the cake too? While in NOPE they remind us how our main characters are broke and need money. Without any evidence all their suffering is for nothing and they have nowhere else to go that THEIRS so you kind of got a side with them on the chase for gold. It’s not enough for them to just kill the alien they have to prove it was there “WE GONNA GET THAT OPRAH✊🏾😁” You spot on about that tension. I loved this movie, more than likely I’ll-see it again
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Nicely put and very true as well to this being a major theme in the film. I think there's definitely something about how the :ordinary people" so to speak rarely get the credit they deserve. Even in the beginning when Oj and Emerald are attempting to get their horses in the commercial. Once. Little hiccup happens, they're just kicked to the side, not getting rhe credit they deserve for having well trained horses. Great connections to those older Godzilla movies as well 👌🏽. There is without a doubt several themes within thr film and some can even be interpreted differently. Just another reason why it's a great movie. I'll probably see it multiple times and maybe in the future do an in depth analysis. Love the comments! 🙌🏾

I am haunted by the thought of being eaten alive. Hearing the people scream and when the girl saw the digesting horse I believe it was just terrified me. Just imagine if the digestion process is slow and people are just slowly dying inside of it. Man. That messed me up. And then the lady that had been mailed by the chimp was eaten again by Jean jacket. Whew
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Yeah so many layers and so much detail all in that scene. I think we all fear being eaten alive and we've seen people eaten in movies a 1000 times, but to actually see the process of them being digested was horrific. The screams and sound design all made it even worse. With this being said I thought it was such a good scene. Unlike anything I've ever seen before. ✊🏾

I actually enjoyed every minute of the film, when I first saw it. Everything from the cinematography, the performance, the way the movie was handled, and such really astonished me of how a filmmaker like Jordan Peele could go and be creative with his work ('cause nowadays it's a rarely at this point). Jordan Peele, in my opinion, had made a Sci-fi thriller that is very unique and enticing to watch.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Same here. And yeah at this point I think Jordan Peele is important, not just because his films are great, but because I think it shows that mainstream horror/sci-fi films from this generation can be of substance. In a sense it helps pave the way for other filmmakers who will hopefully be given big budgets etc. Excited for the future of the genre.! ✊🏾

@@itakeonmovies That line from Daniel where he says he been looking at that skyline for almost 6 months and never noticed really sells it. Great review. I like you liked, US as well. Lupita was giving her all in that movie, but I can also see why people had the criticisms that they did. Sadly, people seem to be split down the middle with this movie/Nope as well. Although, there are a lot more positive reviews with Nope in comparison to US, so that is good to see. As far as I'm concerned, Peele is 3/3. Every movie is different, and has its own look and feel to it, which is cool to see from a director. Each of his films so far are different genres. Get out is psychological, US is slasher/horror, and Nope is sci-fi. The sound design/cinematography were really on another level. The raining blood scene, the Gordy massacre, "aliens" in the barn, the people getting sucked into the alien animal hearing their screams, all of these scenes were masterful. So, far Peele has kept me engaged/curious with all of his films. I can't wait to see what Peele give us next. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
I agree with everything here. Us I feel like is maybe his weakest film and I still enjoyed it and thought it was great! So I would agree he is 3/3 as a writer and director. I also agree that Peele is worthy of the respect becasue of his ability to bring originality and unique stories to the horror/sci-fi genres. Genres that often feel saturated with remakes and sequels. So it's refreshing to see these original stories in mainstream cinema. And I think Peele in each of his films has had some type of scene that is crafted and shot on a master level and this film its the Star Lasso sequence and the Gordy sequence that instantly come to mind. Another scene that I forgot to bring up in the video is the scene in the horse stable with the little kids. While it was funny it was pretty tense! Thank you for the kind words! 🙏🏾

The Thing is not only one of my favorite horror movies, but one of my favorite movies in general. Such great storytelling. There is no surprise as to why Peele is heavily influenced by Carpenter. (Spoiler) The one specific thing I was looking forward to seeing but never did had to do with the alien's anatomy. During it's final peacocking moment where it revealed the square in the middle of that fabric like flapping, i thought a some point we would see OJ riding the horse from the alien's point of view. Then it would have looked almost exactly like the original motion picture featuring his great great great grandfather. That was the icing on the cake that I was selfishly looking for. Otherwise, I loved the movie and I think Peele is on of the smartest filmmakers of the young 21st century.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
I think that would've definitely been cool to see. Knowing a little more about the creature could've added some extra insight, but if I know Peele's work well enough I'm sure he'd much rather have our minds wonder. I think we saw what could've possibly been its eye (that lens looking thing) and we definitely saw its digestive track..lol. So while we didn't get a whole anatomical breakdown, we got some pretty unique features that haven't quite been seen from movie aliens before. Glad you enjoyed it and couldn't agree more on Peele and his status amongst the greats of this generation. ✊🏾

I just saw the movie today. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was pacing was great. It hooked you with the mystery at the beginning with the Dad, slowly showed off the characters and areas, and then the final third was pretty much all fast paced action and payoffs. Keke played my favorite character. She was clearly the comic relief and kept the slower parts entertaining. I also feel the Chimp sections were engaging enough even though they weren't super integral to the movie. Definitely had a lot to do with the themes of the movie, but was enjoyable even without viewing the movie through a thematic or symbolic lense. Even though I could see people arguing the themes aren't as original as "Get Out" or "Us", I think it's simplicity and great twist with the UFO will probably lead it to getting more praise than "Us" All around great alien thriller that anyone could enjoy
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
I pretty much agree with everything you've said here. This was probably the best sci-fi, alien flick I've seen in years and definitely probably the most unique. I also thought Keke Palmer was great. She was just as important of a character as her brother Oj. The contrast between them was great and I can't think of anyone other than Keke Palmer who would've brought that same energy to the film. The scenes with Gordy were unbelievable. I mean on the edge of my seat good, and that almost never happens for me lol. I do think you're right too because while it wasn't directly correlated with the main characters, it definitely worked for some of the film's larger themes. Thank you for this. I also thought it was cool how the creature doesn’t seem to be very intelligent. The movie doesn’t specify an extraterrestrial origin, plus that last scene where it tries to eat the float showed that the creature may just eat whatever it sees. The rule about not looking @it seems to be the idea of a threat. Like with cats, If u look them in the eye, they may see it as a threat.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Yeah I think we're never really given any origin about the creature and it's intelligence level. I think like with most animals humans feel they can outsmart them, and in some cases we can, but we also forget the threat of them being better predators than us. So in a sense we may be smarter, but they can still harm us. ✊🏾

It does a good job explaining the story and the Alien's behavior which I like but I think it was more of a basic horror film than his other works. As a fan of the Twilight Zone (Rod Serlings, never watched Peeles) and twists in general I liked Peele's other films more because of the thought provoking and strange endings. Nope was good but I think it's weaker than both Get Out and US. Still probably one of the best Alien films I've seen since the Alien series. The ending chase was awesome and I gotta give it props for having the climax take place during the day, it was very refreshing to see a horror film take place during the day to.

One thing I love the most about Jordan Peele's body of work is a tendency to dangle but ultimately eschew anything supernatural/extraterrestrial (at least in the traditional sense). I remember an interview where Jack Nicholson admitted that director Stanley Kubrick felt The Shining was ultimately an optimistic movie because it depicted the possibility of life after death. Us is one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen for that fact alone. However so it's rooted in reality.

I can see that. I know a lot of people weren't too impressed with it. I think the film in its entirety may not be a masterpiece, but from a visual and technical aspect I beleive its pretty close to one. What about it didn't you like?

@@itakeonmovies I liked some of the visuals as well, but it wasn’t enough for the story itself. Ironically enough I think my favorite scene of the movie was the one where they show what happened on the set with Gordy.
@EM0000
@EM0000 2 года назад
Eh, its not exactly master class that the scenes with Gordy caught you off guard since its such a loosely connected theme as is. Some themes are held together with a very thin string. Great director very shaky writer imo. Giving me M. Night vibes , at least his dialogue is far superior than what M. Night normally churns out
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
This is a fair point. I think the scene, in itself, is pretty masterclass. I thought it fit into the overall themes pretty well, but definitely have heard some agreeing that the scene was more for show than actually progressing the plot. I also agree his writing can get a little unfocused at times especially with Us. I think Get Out is his best film because how clever and tight the story is. I think Nopes story is more cohesive than Us as well, but not without its flaws forsure. I definitely think the M Knight comparison is a fair one to a degree in terms of writing. Peeles films in my opinion have all been shot WAY better though! Thank you for this! ✊🏾

My opinion Keke Palmer was trash someone else should’ve played her but then again her character was trash too, movie was decent but I’ve come to notice that Jordan peele writing tends to be great 45 min to an 1 hour into his movie but after that it’s PURE trash and boring however I couldn’t write a good script but I can have an opinion though
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Definitely have been hearing a lot of people complain about Palmer. I do think she was a lot, but also feel like she was great contrast compared to her more serious brother. I also think she was a really insecure person in the film too which was all a part of her character atc. As for the writing, I felt that way about Peele with Us, but I thought the writing was pretty good in Nope.

I personally did not like this film. I thought it was cast really well and the cast did great. I love their chemistry. But Jordan is all over the place as a writer and director. You can tell he was still doing heavy rewrites during filming. One of my biggest issues with the film was that they were calling the alien a predator, when it was not predator. It was killed 6 months after arriving to earth by a giant winking cowboy balloon because it didn't know any better. It was literally just eating the horses Jupe fed it. ( how is that predatory?) It was too dumb to not eat food that made it sick, it got sick several times throughout the film, it would shapeshift into things like giant cowboy hats and clouds?!(like wtf!) Even after they discovered it was disguised as a cloud, it stayed a cloud 🙄 Also, it only could see you when you look at it. It also couldn't inhale anything heavy, your safe in houses, cars, shanties, tarp, oh and literally walking in plain sight . There was literally no threat to anyone. Even when it was "releasing" all over the house. Having your house covered in blood and pennies sucks but did you die? And OJ literally fell asleep inside of a stalled vehicle. I've never seen anyone sleep peacefully in a horror movie. If Jordan would've made this a pg-13 fantasy movie, I would've been fine with that. He acts like he is so obsessed with horror, but most of the movies he sighted as inspiration for this were PG-13 sci fi movies. which is what this should've been. But he selfishly wants the R rating and marketing buzz, which the greats like Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock did not need. I hate when he get those comparisons because he relys so heavily on trick marketing. This was an R rated tornado film at best and the only person he should be compared to is M.Night Shyamalan and that is recent M.Night because M.Night has done some amazing work!

Very interesting takes and I even agree with some of them. I think Peeles writing in his last two films has been a less focused. Great ideas that at times may feel all over the place to some. So I understand the M Knight comparison because that's exactly how his films are, mainly his newer works. Personally, I think in terms of Writing, they are similar, but I do feel Peele is a far better director though. His films all look amazing and he gets the best out of his actors. I enjoyed the alien. And while I think you make a great point I do think you can consider it a predator, albeit a new predator to earth still trying to figure out its scheme. Most predators in real life are actually unsuccessful and spend a lot of time resting so it chilling in the clouds didnt bother me. I figured it just ate 50 people and a bunch of horses, maybe its not hungry at the moment lol like a lioness who just ate an antelope. I also think the thing with about it only consuming those who look at it support two ideas the film is trying to make. 1 being that us as humans tend to think were the highest on the pecking order. We see eye to eye with or above everything else, but if were trapped in the wilderness with a wild wolf, maybe respecting it enough/making an agreement to not look it square in the eyes could save your life. We are not in charge or number 1 in the wild in most situations. 2, I think there's this whole idea about spectacle. Us needing to see everything, even in potentially dangerous situations. Pulling our phones out to record the fight. Or pulling over to look at the car burning on the side of the road. I think by not looking at the Alien served as a metaphor for the characters attempting to avoid looking at the spectacle. In my opinion what makes that good writing is that even they, the protagonists fall victim to this same idea, however they respect the creature just enough to survive. Whereas everyone else is simply trying to exploit it. But again, these are just my thoughts, I completely understand your well thought out critiques! Thank you! ✊🏾

@@itakeonmovies I can definitely get behind the idea that we as humans think we are highest on the food chain when in reality, we aren't, depending on the circumstance. To that point, I would've like to see the alien win. It was beaten so quickly and easily. If Jupe had released that balloon on day 1, that alien would've been dunzo. There was no threat at all. If a lion is in my neighborhood I'm not going outside whether it's eaten or not. They were literally walking around and cuttin up while this alien was vacuuming men, women and children. I appreciate your take on all of this and I think you make some great points, but I want Jordan Peele to do better. I want to see his films have a clearer direction. I mean this is only his 3rd film, but we can't let him off the hook because he ruined The Twilight Zone and I believe he did the screenplay for Candyman and that was not great either. He's wants to write horror so bad but it's not his forte.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Very great points again. And I agree with that. I thought the ending was the weakest part of the film. However I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that like with any new thing you learn as go go. They learned plastic was harmful to the alien later in the film thus it was used later in the film. And even then, I'm not sure she expected to kill it with that balloon guy. Just slow it down. And you're right most people wouldn't go outside. But what if your family or a loved ones life depended on it? I think to them that ranch and fighting to get the pick was essentially them saving their family. So while it would be dumb to us, to them it probably felt important. (Wouldn't be me though lol). And I agree. Nothing wrong with holding creators to a higher standard. I want Peele to be at his best at all moments, but it's hard to find a film without flaws. Even some of my favorite films of all time have flaws. I think Peele get lumped into this legendary teir, that we tend to analyze and critique his work harder because it's the expectation. Would definitely love to see a tighter story though from him forsure in the future. Also agree his twilight zone work was pretty bad, but I actually enjoyed the candyman Remake. Again not perfect by any means, but thought some of the ideas were solid. Great direction too. Just out of curiosity what were thoughts on Get Out?

??? 1, It literally staked claim to its own territory, marking it by discarding remains directly on the house itself, challenging those within the area itself, and it literally hunted one of the horses at the ranch, 2 if you count the metal bait horse. It is by all intensive purposes a territorial apex predator, Jupe may have fed it in attempt for communication or training. But giving store brought meat to an alligator in a zoo doesnt make it any less than what it is. 2, While they do state that it has probably been there for 6 months, we never get confirmation that it "arrived" on earth. It could be alien, it could be cryptid, it could be lovecraftian, etc. But none of that matters because in essence it is still only an animal that acts on instinct. Its not intelligent like you or I, it has no way to truly understand that a balloon was not another creature or animal challenging it. Because it only acts upon base instincts, the same way how some cats cant tell the initial difference between a toy rc mouse and the real thing. The only thing it instinctually knew to back away from were flags, because they were present that last time it had a harmful meal for something it believed to be a horse. 3, Again this is at its core an Animal, and as such it shouldnt be underestimated for what it can and cant do. It stayed as a cloud to blend in with the environment, but that doesnt mean it will always just remain as a cloud. And just because it cant inhale anything heavy (above the weight of a solid metal horse) doesnt mean it still cant get to you or at least try. It couldnt inhale the totality shed Em was in, but it was still able to destroy the very foundation from the force alone. Also It sees all but there is a difference between seeing, wanting to eat, and killing for feeling challenged. It wont (initially) kill you if you dont look up because it doesnt want to be challenged or feel threated, so it will do so as defense or to intimidate, the same with how a bear stands on it two legs and will kill if it feels it need to. Eventually it will still eat because it is alive, for now it was only eating some of the biggest prey it could get in its territory, but when that runs out it will eat something else. In total the threat and danger(s) of a wild territorial animal made and seen as a spectacle is present in this movie through jean jacket.

@@itakeonmovies I'm not a fan of Get Out! The idea of white people ultimately taking over black bodies is not scary on any level because they as black people in the real world will still be mistreated. Like come on! Lovecraft Country did it way better by having the black woman turn into a white woman to better herself. No white person would actually want to be a black person and give up their privilege. I think putting black conciousness into white bodies would have been more impactful, because there is no threat to white supremacy currently. But if they added black conciousness for instance into Donald Trump, that's a lot of power. But they chose to select a photographer? And he wasn't even the best photographer. Taking a neurosurgeon and putting his consciousness into a young black man wouldn't benefit a black male if he didn't have the degrees to back it up. The only way the current Get Out may work is if they sold black bodies temporarily and then they could go back to being white. But that's already a thing because blackfishing exists🤷🏾‍♀️. So yeah not a fan.
