NOPOX killing green algae and growing red algae. WTF?

The green algae has effectively all died in this zero nutrient, fish only tank and is rapidly being replaced with red turf algae. There is no winning in this game.

You probably already figured this out but just in case- Ive seen the same in my tank for years- every bloom. I didnt figure it out till recently as I always tried to use NoPox, Vibrant, Dr Tims, Vinnegar and of course Chemiclean. Chemiclean of course cleared it every time but would just come right back (the red). This time I finally clued in that I was measuring 0 nitrate 0 phosphate and this must mean the red was thriving in this environment (probably on light or some other energy source I cant see) so the only way I could win was to beat it by occupying the battlefield. I found a post about using Calcium Carbonate as a flocculent in the tank and a way to deliver any additive right to the surfaces. Seemed handy for what I wanted- Dr Tims recommended dose along with 1ML calc carbonate slurry in my 29Gal with skimmer OFF for min 24 hours- Poof gone same day. Bloomed back just a little on the sand and repeated- gone in hours and never returned. I dont know why my brain never clued in that I was hitting 0/0 nit/phos with my treatments so they clearly could go no further to solve. I see a few posts around these days now recognizing ultra low nutrient is not the way- I can vouch 100% this is the case for my tank with mixed reef and deep sand bed. Bit of beneficial bacteria and give it time without skimming plus a flocculent to disperse. Works. Happy reefing Bud

Thank you for the detailed information, I had not heard of this before and it's very interesting to me.

@@lkapitan8232 Same here. More and more people seem to be coming to the conclusion that blooms are often caused by a lack of a good biome to keep it in check and starving the good one just makes it worse. It fits.

@@MkmeOrg I checked out your channel expecting to find a bunch of reef stuff, but wow, I was blown away. Very impressive, I can't imagine how much work goes into all that, congrats on your success.

That looks like Cyanobacteria. I get it when I have high PO3 or low Nitrate

Since I have both, I can tell the difference. Cyanobacteria is slimy while this red turf algae is fuzzy.

@@lkapitan8232 yeah, I don’t get red turf algae, the tangs & snails probably keep on top of it if it does crop up. As would copepod population. Did NoPoX help melt it away for you in the end? The bubbles in the algae scream Cyanobacteria. Have you a microscope it’s easier to identify that way for certain. NoPoX can strip your tank to the point dinos can be a real problem. Keeping a microscope is seriously helpful.

@@ahoyskid Thanks Craig, I always wanted a good scope, maybe ask the wife to "borrow" one from her lab. I hear what you're saying, I do not use NOPOX on my reef tank for frag tank, too hard to adjust, just my fish only tanks.

Get a tang and a lawnmower blenny.

I am really conflicted over just that subject, I decided from now on to only buy aquacultured coral and fish and thus I am left with very few choices for algae eaters, still looking, and may have to change my mind. Thanks.
