HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

Hey there are you sensational subs back again for a nice Nordic gold melt. The first mold didn't work so I redid it to get a nice piece. It started off pretty ugly but it came out perfect. I'm top of that I did a heap of coins from a woodchip wagon brass nut . Now sit back enjoy today's longer video and I hope to see you all next Friday and as always have an awesome weekend👋🏻😁

Hi, may I ask why you not preheat your molds until theyre red-glowing hot so that the metal wont cool as fast during casting, resulting in a smoother surface?

I wonder if using a pickling solution to rinse your copper would give you cleaner melts? Granted you would have to do it a couple weeks before a melt to make sure there was no moisture left hidden somewhere in the raw materials afterward.

Copper Tin and Zinc is actually an old recipe that used to be known as gun metal way back in the day. It was one of the primary casting materials used on old bronze cannons and it has this absolutely wonderful deep bronze color that weathers to a rich golden brown. It's not as yellow as your nordic gold but it's still very pretty, I'd highly encourage you to make some if at all possible or if you'd be interested. The recipe was usually somewhere along the lines of Copper 85, Tin 12.5, zinc 2.5
@joshschneider9766

There's several similar recipes in a family, to which they and Nordic gold belong. Cast iron bronze aka naval bronze being a pretty cool one to check out.

@@bigstackD Hi bigstackD, I have “found” a way to involve both scrap copper and brass making Nordic Gold, as long as the brass contains more than 6% zinc. For example: If the brass contains 60% Cu and 40% Zn, then 81.5% copper, 12.5% brass, 5% aluminum, 1% tin works. If the brass contains 75% Cu and 25% Zn, then 74% copper, 20% brass, 5% aluminum, 1% tin works. In general, if the zinc content of the brass is Z%, then the recipe is: (94 - 500/Z)% copper, (500/Z)% brass, 5% aluminum, 1% tin.

Metallurgical fun facts: - Adding 10% calcium prevents certain magnesium alloys from being a fire hazard. - Lithium can actually increase the strength of aluminum alloys, since lithium atoms slot themselves very nicely in an aluminum lattice. - Magnesium likes to do the same with titanium. - Aluminum, carbon and manganese can become magnetic when combined into a single alloy. - Adding a bit of aluminum to gold can turn it purple.

I personally would like to see Shibuichi (a Japanese alloy of 25% silver and 75% copper) or Shakudo (another Japanese alloy, this time being 4-10% gold and 96-90% copper). I'm voting for the Shibuichi, since the nice dark gray/black patina with the gold colored metal. Maybe you could even do the combination of both known as Kuro-Shibuichi.

Most bottle caps are an aluminum-steel alloy, unfortunately. The aluminum content might melt well enough, but he'd end up with a buttload of steel slag.

I love when you make Nordic Gold. I’m trying to figure out what a “wood chip wagon” is. Translated to Canadian, is that what we would call a “wood chipper “? 🙂
@cplatter38

Probably a chip trailer... they would need a big brass actuator nut like that for the belly dump or especially for a live bed mechanism...

These brass nuts are around 16LBS each and are From a door opening mechanism off a woodchip wagon that a locomotive pulls along👍🏻

Hi D...I think you did a nice job with this video. I love the color of Nordic gold and this one was a beauty! The coins from the new coin molds looked cool also. Those ribs you had looked delicious and seeing them gave me a craving. The last bit of footage with the dogs chasing each other back and forth tickled me. I really enjoy watching these videos. Especially when you say it's extra long like this week. The time appears to be longer but they don't feel longer after I'm through watching. "Time flies when you're having fun." really applies here. Happy Easter to you and yours D. I hope you all enjoy some quality time together. Take care and I'll catch you again next week. 💙✌️

I never heard of Nordic gold before I started watching this channel. You did one before unless it's a repost. I think you could definitely get away with that. They are so good that old or new we still watch and enjoy 😉 😊 ☺️ 😌

I simply googled the composition of each alloy and then add the appropriate amount by weight into the melt. They won’t be exactly accurate, but they’re pretty close and as this is just a hobby and I keep all the bars and coins. I’m not too concerned about getting it exactly right. Just a fun hobby.👍🏻😁.

If you melt Copper in a graphite crucible and let it slowly cool there until you can let it slide out, then you´ll have nice crystaline structures. I love these and havn´t seen those here😉 To clean the bars, use hydrochloric acid mixed 50:50 with water. Remember protection gear and use a toothbrush to clean them, it´s easy and looks awesome.

I must also mention something to you... I think the bars you have poured into the sand casting method have turned out better than the ones poured into your open molds. Just an observation, but that seems to be the pattern for your pours. I think it may have something to do with not having the ingot molds hot. I could be incorrect...
