When is an AK-47 not an AK-47? In the case of the Chinese produced Norinco MAK-90, that question hinges on where you live.
In China, it is considered a modified AK-47.
In Russia, it is an illegal patent-infringing knock-off.
And in America, it’s definitely NOT an AK-47 because those are illegal to import… and we like to import firearms.
The MAK 90 or “Modified AK, 1990”, is a semi-automatic Type 56 assault rifle that was released in 1990 by the Chinese government-owned company, Norinco. The rifle is designed to look and operate identical to an AK-47. It even handles the same magazines.
They are calibered in 7.62mm and have chrome-lined barrels that will chew any ammo you throw in them, no matter how cheap.
Due to their import license predating many of the heavy-handed regulations that came later, the MAK-90 uses a standard AK-47 magazine which is easy and cheap to find.
And yes, the Chinese stole the design from the Soviets. In fairness, this was about the time the USSR was collapsing so I imagine their patent lawyers had other priorities.
So why is the MAK-90 exempt from the US import ban on AK-47s? Essentially, because the MAK-90 doesn’t look scary or have a Russian name.
