The difference between Man Show Kimmel and ABC Kimmel is mind blow. The process of watching someone devolve into a corporate hack in real time is just too much.
mightisright - Norm lays down a false pre-interview & never goes to that expected talk during interviews. He said he doesn’t like the host to know what’s coming in advance. Letterman & Conan figures this out waaay back & now they just skip the preinterview. I don’t think Kimmel was as wise to it at this point.
@@waynestarr6705 That's the best part. i didn't know who he was until I saw him on Norm's show. All I know is Super Dave is a character played by comedian Bob Einstein. I guess he was on a show called curb your enthusiasm. I've never watched it. It's not on Netflix or Hulu. Is it any good? I watched him on Jerry Seinfeld comedian in cars getting coffee. Funny funny guy.
I'm not an English native speaker, so I was like "Super AIDS Password? Who the fuck is Super AIDS Password? That guy sounds just like Funkhouser", and sure enough, it was a Bob impression. That "Ley me ask you a question" is so Funk. RIP
@@Pyro-Moloch Norm's arguing that it's better to be able to binge watch a show without the cliffhangers and waiting a week for the next episode. Jimmy says it's fun since you can discuss what happened with friends. Norm's book club answer refers to the fact that a book club is where you're able to discuss something that everyone read in their own spare time. His point is that he doesn't care for talking about what's going on with the show, he just wants to see the whole thing. Which is consistent with his point about not wanting to have to think about or guess what the ending is.
Norm Macdonald is the best talk show guest in history. He kills every time. Check out his appearance on Conan with Courtney Thorne Smith....best ever: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5F6dXcW-_Fc.html
Norm is one of those rare comedians who doesn't have to go thru the script on Conan ,Fergusen or Letterman....Its below his dignity so they let him rip....and he never fails....Never...
3ternal dunno, he had two specials out when you commented, one of which wasn't terribly old and is one of the best hours of stand-up ever, and had a third special released a few months after your comment. he could do ten more probably and still wouldn't get the recognition he deserves. norm would disagree, but he does do smart comedy. not in the sense that he provides intelligent social commentary, but that much of it is subtle enough to sail right over dumb people's heads. it's a totally douchey thing to say, but it's true. have you ever tried telling a subtle joke like the 'this guy was a real jerk' joke to dumb people?
So strange that his comedy just doesnt seem to translate well into a sitcom or movie etc. Just seeing him there talking with someone is brilliant. I wonder if he will ever land a role or format that can really showcase his fantastic humour.
@@smcgilli34 it translates well id say he is just better in small doses. Hes a literal genius but alot of his intellect and hunor is used on fucking with who ever hes with. But...pigeons sexy af lol. Seems very norm lol.
@@smcgilli34 the norm show? It's brilliant The trick is to let him be and talk his mind They say he's a bad actor but what they don't realize is he's always in character
"You can't see everything... it's hard enough to see anything" Norm is a fucking genius. Something about this line and the way he made it up on the spot just speaks volumes to the way his mind works. You assume he means 'you can't see everything' because there is so much to see... nope! I simply don't think the same way. Idk how he does it.
+AJ Patrick That is without question the setup they agreed on in rehearsal. So much of comedy is switching sides. I think they wanted to make it more like Norm was the host.
Nah, Norm likes to fuck with late night show hosts. You can hear Conan talk about it a lot, when people ask him about Norm, as well as Norm talking about it himself. And of course you can watch Letterman and his hysterical laughter when Norm pulls a 180 at his setups.
Okay, so I'm not a celebrity fanatic, but my one thing I do is follow Norm Macdonald like a nerd. Trust me when I say this is one of Norm's strongest appearances. Totally on point the entire time.
Thought I had seen every single appearance from Norm - just found this. Read your comment before I started the video and the excitement that came over me . This is gonna be a good one
Yeah, this interview is damn near perfect (I also have a Norm obsession, which extends to watching other people who are equally obsessed with Norm, like Jay Mohr)
Nick Gaspar As I recall it -- and I could be wrong, but -- Norm started on SNL just doing Weekend Update, never appearing in sketches. Then, they took him off Update for a brief time before firing him, and suddenly he did _several_ amazing impressions almost all at once -- dead-on Letterman, dead-on Larry King, and there was always the Burt Reynolds impression, which seemed effortless.
yes! love it! actually all of the few impressions he does are spot on.. maybe it's true what he says about only impersonating people you like is the key. respect!
oh i'm sorry haha thought everyone knew at this point, Reddit is like a world forum for pretty much anything, on this forum there are sub-division, called subreddit, so just go to norm's subrredit, which is /r/NormMacdonald (just put that after the website)
I think we have all seen pretty much every interview Norm has done at least a couple of times. This one is in my top 5 for sure I think. Hadn't seen it in a while and I forgot how good it was. Although I feel like I say that after every Norm video I watch.
Pure genius. His fanbase is also the funniest with all the puns. God knows genuinely love this man. ...... also Jimmy Kimmel looks like a man I saw many times under the Queensborough Bridge
A lot of people talk about Norm’s appearances on Conan with such high regard (and for good reason), but this interview is just incredible. Norm was on fire the whole show. We just saw one of the all-time great TV comedy performances.
I’m literally just crying laughing throughout this whole thing and you can tell it’s the same with the audience there. I love how Norm barely even has individual jokes, it’s just everything about him and everything he says and how he says it is hilarious.
This is why we love Norm. He's the smartest guy in the room, but he juxtaposes this fact with his shtick where he's the dumbest guy in the room, or, more accurately, that he's not necessarily dumb but that he's the most naive guy in the room. The effect is hysterically funny, and he deserves all the accolades he's received because of his genius. I mean, who else but Norm could drop a Nora Ephron reference but yet juxtapose this with being a naïf, and get such laughs?
this interview is one of the best TV pieces of all time to me. Norm literally is in command throughout the whole thing, just look at the commercial part.
That's because it _chaps their hyde_ when a guest goes on a *talk show* and *waxes poetic* about the *host* of a different *talk show.* You see *Jimmy* get flustered when Norm brings up *David Letterman.*
That's one thing that kills me about Norm. He's literally one of the best impressionists out there, but he doesn't show it off. Someone that good, you would expect would be all "Stand back. Here comes my So-and-so impression!" But he just slips it in when he has an actually funny story about Super Dave, or Bob Uecker, etc.
Ben Culture Exactly. It's the same idea as his Weekend Update being dedicated to news when he knows nothing about politics. Now, I think he's playing dumb when he says that. I think he is a 130-135 person with issues in logic.
LaughterMadeFat Are we talking about IQ's? Because I like to say two things about IQ's: 1.) they aren't necessarily accurate; but b.) I have one over 140 myself. So, if they don't count, all well and good, but if they DO count, I have something to brag about! I dated a girl with a true "genius" level IQ, something over 160. What a nightmare. Couldn't win any arguments with her. And it's not like high intelligence makes you _wise._ Or _not crazy._ There was all sorts of horrible dysfunction in her behavior. But she could rationalize fucking anything, and make you feel like an idiot for objecting to her behavior.
"Because ...you can't see everything ... it's hard enough to see anything!" These little overlooked pearls are the essence of this comic genius, he is so incredibly entertaining and funny and then you realize that the audience (yourself included) didn't even get caught perhaps half of the jokes, hidden meanings and wordplays.
And not just a caricature of the voice or mannerisms, but the cadence of speech, joke timing and delivery. Even funnier that one of Norm's calling cards is doing lazy impressions, and then every now and then he pulls something like this out as a knowing wink to the audience.
“I used to love it when Rodney would go on Carson and just destroy. Then he’d go over and sit on the couch and destroy. Then he’d lean over to Johnny and say ‘so how was your week?’”
@@leadnitrate2194 yeah that’s exactly it. It’s actually fascinating how well Norm would change his material and general approach depending on what show he was on (Letterman, Leno, Conan, etc). He only tends to go for the “steamroll” approach for the guys he doesn’t revere much at all, or sometimes on Leno just because Leno’s so laid-back and hands-off anyway that it works.
