Identity politics are bullshit. Get a life progressives.
Norman Gene "Norm" Macdonald is a Canadian stand-up comedian, writer, producer and actor. He is best known for his five seasons as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, which included anchoring Weekend Update for three years. Early in his career, he wrote for the sitcom Roseanne and made appearances on shows including The Drew Carey Show and NewsRadio. He starred in The Norm Show from 1999 to 2001. Comedy Central named him #83 on the five-part miniseries 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. He is noted as a favorite talk show guest of David Letterman, Howard Stern, Dennis Miller, and Conan O'Brien. His brother is Canadian journalist Neil Macdonald, of CBC News.[3][4]
Macdonald was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada,[2] and raised in Ottawa, Ontario.[citation needed] Macdonald has a brother, Neil Macdonald, who is a journalist with the CBC.[4]
Career[edit]
Macdonald's first performances in comedy were at stand-up at clubs in Ottawa. He appeared at the 1987 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.[5]
Saturday Night Live[edit]
Macdonald joined the cast of NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL) television program in 1993, where he performed impressions of Larry King, Burt Reynolds, David Letterman, Charles Kuralt and Bob Dole, among others. Following Kevin Nealon's departure from SNL, Macdonald anchored the segment Weekend Update. Chevy Chase, the first anchor of Weekend Update, has quipped that Macdonald was the "best Weekend Update anchor since - well - Chevy Chase".[6] Current Update anchor and head writer Colin Jost named Macdonald as a primary influence on Jost's own work behind the "Update" desk, explaining that Macdonald's tone was one that Jost grew up with in high school.[7]
Macdonald's version of Weekend Update often included repeated references to prison rape, crack whores and the Germans' love of Baywatch star David Hasselhoff. Macdonald would occasionally deliver a piece of news, then take out his personal compact tape recorder and leave a "note to self" relevant to what he just discussed. He commonly used Frank Stallone as a non sequitur punchline. Macdonald repeatedly ridiculed public figures such as Marion Barry, Michael Jackson and O. J. Simpson. Throughout Simpson's trial for murder, Macdonald constantly pilloried the former football star, often heavily implying Simpson was guilty of the brutal slaying of his wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. In the broadcast following Simpson's acquittal, Macdonald opened Weekend Update by saying: "Well, it is finally official: murder is legal in the state of California."
During the February 24, 1996, episode, Macdonald made a controversial joke about the sentencing of John Lotter, one of the two men who committed the notorious murder of Brandon Teena: "In Falls City, Nebraska, John Lotter has been sentenced to death for attempting to kill three people in what prosecutors called a plot to silence a cross-dressing female who had accused him of rape. Now this might strike some viewers as harsh, but I believe everyone involved in this story deserved to die."[8][9]
After the announcement that Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley planned to divorce, Macdonald joked about their irreconcilable differences on Weekend Update: "She's more of a stay-at-home type, and he's more of a homosexual pedophile." He followed this up a few episodes later with a report about the singer's collapse and hospitalization. Referring to a report of how Jackson had decorated his hospital room with giant photographs of Shirley Temple, Macdonald remarked that viewers should not get the wrong idea, adding, "Michael Jackson is a homosexual pedophile." The joke elicited audible gasps from some audience members. He responded to this by saying, "What? He is a homosexual pedophile."[10]
Another uncomfortable moment occurred during the April 12, 1997, show (host Rob Lowe, musical guest The Spice Girls), wherein, during a Weekend Update story about Tabitha Soren, he accidentally coughed in the middle of a sentence and, live on the air, muttered, "What the fuck was that?" The audience applauded, and Macdonald laughed the error away (saying at one point "My fare

I think the problem is he made two mistakes here. @dash4800
@dash4800 6 лет назад
I think the overarching point he is making through all of this is the hubris people have to think they know everything when in reality they don't really know anything. No matter how deep into science you go you will always hit a point where there are no answers. I think people end up using science to bolster their own smugness instead of actually trying to learn anything. I think norm sees this in comedy a lot, for example when he called out that anti christian comic for not knowing what he was talking about.

I think the comments are being heavily moderated / cherry picked as I cannot believe there aren’t more people calling Norm out about some of his statements. People aren’t proud to be gay or black for no reason, they’re proud because for a lot of people they’ve been made to feel persecuted and ashamed of their ethnicity or sexuality, so to be ‘proud’ is just a way of saying that they’re not ashamed. Duh.
@hunterweeks6091
@hunterweeks6091 5 лет назад
@@RobLate I think he makes it clear that he knows that's the original intent of people claiming to be proud. He says that we've forced people into that because we've shamed them for so long. However, his point is that it's sad how that pride, or a healthy un-shame, becomes people's entire identity to an extent. I personally know many for whom that is true, they spend all their time talking about that small piece of their identity and defending it and trying convincing others to do believe the same. Further more he says they criticize Christians for how concerned they are with that part of their Identity, when actually, to Norm, and I agree, the issues of God in our out of our lives is much more significant

Great interview. I love Norm and I'm not deeply closeted about it. Two issues he points out with mainstream pop science that I can appreciate. 1. "It's very interesting that they choose the God that they decide doesn't exist. Which really means they are choosing the God they think exists." Referring to Atheists mentioning Christianity. I wanted to reject that at first but SOCIALLY speaking, that's kinda true. They single out Christianity as their biggest opponent. Personally, I don't think they are doing it because they are subconsciously choosing the God that DOES exist necessarily, though in some cases that may be true. I think it is because that is the popular religion with the most influence in the lives of scientists and they develop a hatred towards it due to memorable conversations with the commonly uneducated Christian that misrepresents Christianity. Either way, it's a fair observation. 2. "I don't know if they are open to new evidence when I hear Steven Hawking say there is no God." "That doesn't sound like a scientist to me." I completely agree with that. As a scientist, that would be a very biased statement to make, and unscientific. It's still a coin toss. We don't know. But if you want to advertise your bias... I can appreciate this too. "There is no purpose without God." I believe that to be true. We can create our own social purpose and do good things, but ultimately, if there is no God, I don't see how humanity has purpose. What's the point? I think that is a simple motivator for people to choose to believe in God. It gives life more meaning and holds us accountable for our actions. But what do I know... "We're all fucking idiots." :D IF you disagree with me, I still LOVE and RESPECT YOU. Cheers, Adam

God can't be disproven, that's the problem. He's hiding behind this idea that he's open-minded about science proving him wrong, when in reality he should know science can never disprove God, just like it can't disprove the existence of any other made-up thing. In that sense, his open-mindedness is shallow and just for show and will never actually be challenged. Science has arguably already done all it can to prove that a God wasn't necessary in the creation of the universe, the sun, earth, life on earth, etc., so anyone who can still convince themselves that God had some part in it are likely never going to change their minds (or at least not because science suddenly convinced them).

What, that he's really dumb and doesn't even understand what "science" means and how conclusions are come to? He certainly doesn't know what atheists even think. They NEVER say that God doesn't exist, only that there is no real "evidence" of a God. The burden of proof would not be on the Atheist to "Prove" anything. To say that there is no purpose without a "god" shows how dumb he is.

One time an Atheist and I discussed the idea of “purpose” and “function.” We agreed that all life, no matter what it was, serves in one degree or another a purpose or function. I defined it as purpose, he defined it as function. If all life serves in one degree or another a purpose or function, what gave it purpose or a function? Time, chance, and natural evolution? Or a creator: a being outside of the known material reality, time, and space? Every single tool that man creates has a purpose or function. It serves to build, preserve, create, define, and redefine reality according to the human’s imagination and idea of what he or she will bear. But the tool does not “appear” out of no where or come from nothing. It did not appear purely out of materiality, time, and space on its own. It could never, because it never was before it was. Someone had to think of it first, find a purpose/function for it, and create it. It was guided into existence. It came from a far more intelligent being that created and molded the tool for a special purpose and goal. If humanity has enough faith that we are not alone in the universe, because we look at the stars and galaxies far far away and realize we are a needle in a vast haystack in the known universe, what makes us believe that God is nothing more than a dream of our own mind’s creation? Are we so brilliant to deny “fairytales” of an all-powerful, intelligent being that is the ultimate creator of all life that we forgot we are here to prove the truth, not find alternative ways to prove a conclusion we already want? In other words, science has already reached a conclusion before even examining the evidence: there is no creator. Therefore, it finds every which way to prove that conclusion, to back that conclusion, and denies any type of notion that a creator exists. I’m not saying talking about religion as much as the idea of a creator. I just think science seems to try so hard to disprove a creator, and more try to prove a conclusion, that they often come across as bias, negative, and bitter in even the thought of a creator more so than a person who simply doesn’t care about if his beliefs could change based on the truth, like Norm. Everything in science should always be debated and challenged, and the conclusion that there is no creator should be as challenged as the idea that there is.
@turevedin9968
@turevedin9968 4 года назад
I don't agree that tools can't appear on their own. That we must create them. A rock or a stick found in the woods have been used by humans with a function and purpose for thousands of years. We did not create those tools. Yet they can still be given the title of a tool just like hammers and whatever. We found them and gave them meaning and purpose, in the same way that I believe that we give our own lives meaning and purpose. In a way we need a higher intelligence to give our lives purpose and that higher intelligence is ourselves. Our lives only has a meaning in our own heads.

What atheists don't get is that christians don't just believe in god simply because of the Bible's existence, but through gods intervention in their lives. When in explainable miracles happen in your life you would believe in god too. Our faith is backed by more than just the bible, its the spiritual experience as a whole. You realize that people of other faiths do that as well? The people of Rome believed that Scipio Africanus was favored by the Gods and that he spoke with Jupiter. Scipio defeated the Carthaginians without losing a single battle; does that mean that God intervened on his behalf? I'm not trying to be rude or disrespectful of your beliefs, but don't you think that it is odd that people throughout history have attributed events to their respective deities? How come that all societies throughout history have had their own Gods that reflected their ideals, if the Christian God is the true one?

Felix Hurtig If we as Christians are to be honest, yours is one of many good questions, that we probably can't answer. At least I can't, but I'm not the brightest bulb in the box. It (the inspired belief in other gods throughout history) is, among many others, a subject that I wrestle with myself. (The logical answer is that man needs structure, something to believe in, so he makes up his gods. One can certainly attempt to apply that logic to my beliefs!) Perhaps it is the fact that, despite such potentially troubling questions, some of us still deeply, inately believe, that is, in and of itself, the proof we are looking for. Something prompts us to believe! One of the biggest struggles for me is the question of why did God give this gift of faith to so many (we couldn't possibly believe it all without faith!) but apparently not to others, including seemingly very good people. My faith tells me it's His plan, and it'll all work out, but it still keeps me up at night! BTW, I appreciate your knowledge of the RE! Peace!

Trent Armitage Intuition is the ability to understand something without relying on conscious reasoning. It is deep within our being. Intuition is what leads us to a belief in god, reason has its limitations. With no intuition how would we know anything to be true? To argue against the intrinsic truth that intuition is (and I’m going off a quote from C.S Lewis here) is to argue with the very power that allows you to believe anything to be true at all, it’s like you’re cutting yourself off the branch you’re sitting on. Said branch being ‘reason’, which is used to objectify something that we know to be true, like giving it a name. Reason and thought can put us in trouble, so it needs to be guided by intuition. Could you enlighten me on why you think it’s wrong? I’d appreciate to hear your opinion.

We can’t even have a discussion if you believe intuition is a pathway to truth. It is demonstrably not. Have a nice day

Trent Armitage Sure it does inspire one to make sense of it. Reason, logic and science are tools or ways to describe something we already see/sense to be true.. with intuition. Simple as that. We wouldn’t have maths or Einstein’s theory of relativity without intuition. giving something a quantifiable means doesn’t make anymore true than it already was, it just helps us understand it. Consciousness is intuitive. Animals are intuitive. I understand if you don’t reply, because it actually can’t be proven wrong, especially if you believe intuition exists!

@@tsad5611 hilariously the fact that you deny even the possibility for an alternative point of view demonstrates that you are deeply entrenched in the church of logic and reason. wake up my dude.
