Norm Maxwell- The hard hitting All Black reflects on the incredible highs and lows of his career

Norm Maxwell was pound for pound the hardest hitter this game has probably ever seen. At just 90kgs the All Black lock through himself into collisions like no other every time he stepped on the field. However you tell Norm that he's tough and he's not buying it.
From growing up with feeling the field was the only place he was free and his first big collision being the first time he felt respected, Norm always was going to play rugby. His Crusaders contract came quicker than he'd ever thought and something that was was far from ready for. Throughout his career his battled with injuries and a sore body which took it's toll and forced him to change his identity as a player and a person.
It's clear after this episode that players weren't prepared for professional rugby at the time and you can hear the struggles that Norm had to face not just physically but mentally and psychologically as well.
This is one of my all time favourite episodes Norm is a story teller who is so open and honest and I know you'll enjoy this one! If you do can you please do me a favour and share/ like and subscribe so I can keep bringing you more legends like the great Norm Maxwell.

What a Lad Podcast - shot!, You've cracked it, this is such a good interview, the Man, ----- having a laugh at his own expense, then a cry, interesting stuff about himself and his interesting life, great insight and sound advice. What a good ***t (lad!) You get his humor and together well, its top entertainment! 10/10 Always loved Norm Maxwell, my favorite AB straight up, used to see him around Edgeware, I was down there from the North Is. too at the time, thank god I didn't say hello to him (haha). Back to the question.... "One" of the things I learnt from NM in this one - was a situation today at work and I thought, Na I need to communicate my situation here, its hard to explain but it isactually because I watched this and it was all the better that I did that too - all round. Also the looking at yourself bit is good idea for me for another day for sure! Thank you, good health & best wishes for the future - Legend xx

Grew up with Norm… and yes as a kid he was the skinny pakeha kid who had zero fear… played league against/with him from 10-14 then he disappeared to Union never saw him again til he played a “friendly” under 18s league game against us and the dude had a 4ft growth spurt 😂😂😂 caught up with him in the height of his footy fame a few times, he was always the same bro from up home… just wiser, spoke deeply, told amazing stories of his healing trip to Brazil (not sure if that’s the Kaka trip😬) awesome to see he’s found his place, go well brother.

Incredible conversation, so brave and sincere. I am 30 now and i am from Galicia so i never had the chance to enjoy him as a player in his prime, but i,ve heard stories and lessons by him from friends that we have in common and i am happy and kinda emotional to hear this ones in the podcast because everybody can feel related to those feelings and doubts. So when you are a legend and show your human side, you make normal people and amateur rugby lovers have some faith in this kind of way to see the life. Rugby is a tool to know and improve yourself and everybody should apply it to their life. Love from Pontevedra, Norm! Thanks!

On a Friday night. And we seen him from a distance walking and cause of how big he was he was easy to spot. We didn’t know him personally but just off TV. Anyways So me and my mates we yelled out to him “ Hey Maxwell got any money bro” he looked over to us and waved us over to him as he walks over to a ATM he cashed out $300 and handed over to us and said have fun make sure u guys share that!! Me and my mates couldn’t believe it!!We all gave him a hi five I can’t remember what we did but He is the most generous guy I have ever meet! And we never forget meeting him that night chur bro

Truely an amazing interview inspirational Man, taking the time to cultivate awareness internally has so much benefits many men think it's a weakness when the truth is it's a super power just look at Norms perspective on life what a super human. I remember one game the ABs lost a game the ref Jonathan Kaplan awarded the wallabies a penalty at the end of the game Eales steps up slots it between the posts for the win. When leaving the field unhappy fans started raining projectiles upon the ref Kaplan it was this man that covered his retreat under the stands.

Excellent interview. I've always been a fan of Norms and not just because he's from the North. Now i know why he was a beast in the tackle learning how to, starting off in league where its the only game where you get your defense down pat for one on one hard tackles. Sounds like John Mitchell was an egg head.....oh no wait, he actually was an egg head :) I was hoping for some korero on his good mate the other great Norm, Norm Berryman. 👍
