www.ted.com Architect Norman Foster discusses his own work to show how computers can help architects design buildings that are green, beautiful and "basically pollution-free." He shares projects from throughout his career, from the pioneering roof-gardened Willis Building (1975) to the London Gherkin (2004). He also comments on two upcoming megaprojects: a pipe to bring water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, and the new Beijing airport.

Please excuse my ignorance...what software does Mr. Foster use to model the forces of wind and for 3d modeling?

I like the idea of building cities vertically instead of laterally. It cuts way back on need for cars and transportation and the overall 'footprint' of the city.

richardthripp, catch up on yesterday's national news. It made every major network. No, the oceans are not rising. The ice, the size of the state of Connecticut, just detached from the land. This ice mass was holding an enormous glacier in place. If this glacier slips into the ocean, the oceans will rise. Every meteorologist reported this news yesterday. I suggest you watch Sam Champion on ABC's "Good Morning America" in a few hours. I hope that Sam will help you understand.

Why did he call the date July 20, 1969? The first flight in space with a man on board was April 12, 1961 (USSR, Yuri Gagarin)

Chachalaca777 First, your calculation is correct! But the ice sheet is not 60 km^3. You have actually missed quite a lot of zero..... For example (from wiki): The Antarctic ice sheet contains 30 million km³ of ice.

chachalaca777, you just calculated it. Interesting. The world's scientists calculated it to be as much as 20 feet in NYC and Southern Florida. Maybe you should give one of them a call.

Norman Foster is becoming the poster boy of Greenwash architecture. What was the energy rating of the Lord Mayor's office Norman??? Are your 'future-proofed' buildings ready for smart meters and 24/7 post occupancy evaluation???

I've heard of this "dense cities" bullshit before. So what happens when dense city philosophy combines with shortages of construction approvals, say, like, in Sydney, Los Angelis? This causes increases in prices and causes an outflow of people. It irritates me when scientists get involved in economics, as if they have some deep insight into it.

richardthripp, I guess you did not catch the news today. Ice, the size of Connecticut just broke away from the Antarctic. This ice will not raise the sea level; the glacier it was supporting from drifting into the ocean will raise the sea level. Don't believe me, read today's news. Please do not think your opinion is fact. You don't even pay attention to current events.
