HISTORATHON 2024
Historathon is a year-long celebration of reading historical nonfiction. The goal is to read, discuss, and spotlight works of history, and to encourage reluctant readers to give history a try. The calendar year will be divided into three-month blocks, with each block focusing on a particular period of time:
Jan-March = Prehistory-500 CE
April-June = 500-1500
July-Sept = 1500-1820
Oct-Dec = 1820-Present
To participate, simply read a work of history that falls into the time period for each quarterly segment of the year. Read more if you’d like! Tailor the choices to your interests or try something completely new.
Historathon "Side Quests": We will also be encouraging/participating in history-related activities throughout the year, including watching historical films/documentaries, trying historical recipes, listening to historical music, etc. Feel free to join us!
We will be using the hashtag: #historathon2024

Nice Edition of Fresh-Read Kills both books look interesting, it's nice to read an older work of history to gain new knowledge and find out how much research an author did.
@DavidWiley7
As I suspected, both of these definitely sound interesting! Thanks for sharing about two more books to put onto my wish list!
@HannahsBooks
Despite your reservations, at least the topic of The Women Troubadours sounds really fascinating! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
@LiamsLyceum
Old Occitan is the language, it’s very interesting! Occitan still survives, wish people realized the diversity and history of France
@battybibliophile-Clare
Those Vikings get everywhere. I am reading a biography of Saladin and they are mentioned on nearly every page of the first 100 pages.
@LiamsLyceum
That’s a weird error about the Stamford Bridge events!
@katjack2780
Speaking of the Albigensian Crusade, I recently found out that a branch of my family is descended from Simon de Montfort (the father of the parliamentary Simon). He was one of the leaders of the crusade. Just proves the old adage that you can't choose your ancestors...

I'm sorry, I forgot what brought me to your channel
@LiamsLyceum
Immaculate Conception being a virgin birth was what I was taught growing up, but it being Mary free of original sin is the general belief
@DDB168
Interesting to point out the poor copy editing. The dirty little secret is a lot of it is outsourced, certainly in Australia anyway. The picture quality of the 2nd book looks like the knock offs you see in Vietnam 🤭 The wiki page on IC is pretty good. You're correct in your definition, but a lot of people wrongly assume (myself included) it's about that whole virgin birth thingy.
@NicholasOfAutrecourt
Neil Price (very much in passing) touches on the nefarious appropriation of Viking history and culture in the very beginning of "Children of Ash and Elm" only to never mention it again, so it's a shame "Norse America" does the same thing. There

I wonder what people 500 years from now will get wrong about our current times? Best wishes.
