Tropical storms and hurricanes are known to do damage, even be deadly in North Carolina from the coast to the low-lying areas along our rivers and even as far inland as Raleigh and Durham. Every North Carolina resident and visitor should be weather aware - tracking the tropics for what is coming and preparing your home and family to weather any storm. After the season's first tropical storm last week, things are looking pretty quiet in the Atlantic.
There is a tropical wave a few hundred miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The chances for formation over 48 hours are very low as of Monday afternoon. Alberto formed earlier last week as the first named system of the season, bringing heavy rains and flash floods to parts of Texas and northeastern Mexico. The next name on the list is Beryl.
There is still a rip current risk along the N.C. coast. Over the past week, more than 140 people were rescued from life-threatening rip currents. According to the National Weather Service, the risk of life-threatening rip currents is high from Emerald Isle to Cape Hatteras. The rest of the N.C. coast is currently at a moderate risk.
