In a rematch of the 1988 ACC Tournament Championship Game, North Carolina played Duke for the tournament title. After falling in the title game the previous two years, the Tar Heels came on top and defeated the Blue Devils, 77-74. In a game most remembered for a verbal exchange between coaches Mike Krzyzewski and Den Smith, nine combined players scored in double-digits, five from UNC. J.R. Reid led North Carolina with 14 points and nine rebounds and was named the Tournament MVP. Jeff Lebo had 13 points, three steals, and two assists. Scott Williams added 11 points and 11 rebounds. For Duke, Gerald Henderson had 16 points, and Danny Ferry scored 14 points. Christian Laettner finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.
