Well, it's still technically an air raid, I guess; even though these raids aren't really lethal by themselves. i.e. you have those rapid disposal teams and such, and they didn't drop the... y'know, these "things" they always boast about. Even then, I guess it was really scary even if it's on the phone, not through public air sirens. Hearing sirens while living right next door to a hostile country (technically) having the ability to shred your nation's biggest city and capital to pieces after just 30 minutes of a war declaration sure must be horrifying.

Well, it could have been anything. You never know what is inside these balloons or any other flying objects coming from NK, so it’s better to be careful

I'm from South Korea. Some civic groups in S.Korea have sent rice, USB, etc. in balloons. Rice is a very important resource in North Korea and is more valuable than anything to ordinary citizens in N.Korea. Because chocolate and candy are snacks, but rice is a staple food.

Actually it's the opposite, first, some south Korean activists send balloons with K-pop (basically the Korean imitation of US black music /hip hop etc...) , drama/tv, shows and propaganda against Kim Jong UN etc ... North Korea responded to this provocation by sending trash in their own balloon to say "you send us trash we do the same" . It's a way for them to say that Americanized Korean music and drama is trash .(Plus for them it's one more sign of American influence on the peninsula) . Some older Koreans like my dad (73) or myself (27 but born in France) would think it's stupid and immature to act like this with north Korean (especially if we want reconciliation instead of a rise of conflict) , but the South Korean government didn't do anything about it and seems to like the idea of sending balloons. North didn't send anything initially but only after receiving the balloon decided to do the same , replacing K-pop with trash to express what they think about it (understandable considering art history and small exposure to US music from them, different taste , just like my parents ). South Korean government didn't like the fact the north treated K-pop balloons as trash so decided to do more . Initially it was activist but then the government decided to join. If you have more questions don't hesitate (i'll meet my dad soon so might talk about that)

But the painful truth is that it's hard to convince both to give up on their stances. Both sees the other side as sworn enemies, both seeks to protect the way things were and are in the areas they have authority to rule over, and both only could think about that. If you want to protect your state from another hostile state, you must have an armed force capable to serve as deterrence to military actions first, a strong foundation for the people to "accept" (i.e. not sympathising with the enemy) the current situation second, and (perhaps most importantly) actions to sway the enemy population to their side. That's what both sides of the DMZ are doing. They don't realise the population's all Korean - plainly Koreans. They sure must still have a thing or two in common and some might still long for reunification, as like Vietnam in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Anyways, time will tell if they'll eat each other alive, leave each other be or stop this entire escalade stuff and fuse again into an united Korea. As a military geek, my best guess is the first one.
