Alone from the social-cultural perspective everybody should watch this video. Two fundamentally different value- and normsystems clashing together, raising eyebrows and awkward feelings. Much respect for Nara for sharing her experiences. Speaking so freely about her culture is surely not always a pleasant thing to do. P.S....glad you’re back, Kevin. :)

I think it would be good to put the (real) translations as well Dave! For example 사향쥐 is also a word in Korean but it means Muskrat! And another example was explaining 색안경 and describing it but you never gave the real word for it in English (coloured/tinted sunglasses). Happy holidays!

Something I found interesting is that the word 사향쥐 typically means "muskrat" in Korean (사향 is the word for "musk" in Korean and appears to have roughly the same meaning in Korean as it does in English), but as Nara said is used in North Korea to refer to hamsters. It makes me wonder other foreign rodents are also referred to as 사향쥐 or if it's just hamsters.

I know as 사향쥐's meaning is same in NK as muskrat. Maybe she was confused hasmster with a muskrat because she saw that in SK for the first in her life.

It's so interesting that North Korea incorporated the English word for jeans and South Korea didn't. That's really rare. I guess it makes sense considering how strongly they associate jeans with America.

We also use colored glasses in Chinese mandarin as prejudice but we do have the word for sunglasses It’s maybe just another vocabulary that we share

American Koreans who don't know Korean that well and North Korean vocabulary have a lot in common. When I was younger and barely knew Korean or didn't have the (maturity of wanting to learn), I also call Jeans, "Jean Bah jee" as well
