North Wildwood Beach Erosion 2024 Gotten WORSE?

As we inch closer to summer, many visitors are asking what the beaches in North Wildwood look like since our last tour.
While the beach size hasn't changed since our last video, the dunes surely have.
North Wildwood's dunes between 12th and 16th street have gotten to the point to where we are a few storms away until the ocean water could be pouring into our streets.
This creates many problems since sand in our storm sewers will cause damage to the system. The worst part is the potential impact of the ocean on private property.
A bulkhead would solve all of these issues but the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has not approved North Wildwood's appeal to install a connecting bulkhead.
This bulkhead would connect the existing one at 12th Street to the one at the North Wildwood Lifeguard station.
This a tour of what the beach currently looks like.

So happy they are approving the beach replenishment. We love you JOEY!!

Unfortunately developers have moved the natural process of what Mother Nature intended for that shoreline. Those dunes never acted as a barrier but provided some sponge effect to ease the ocean’s impact. Providing a stiff barrier like a bulk head does nothing but only deflect pressure elsewhere this water will find a way to breach!

I was down right where you were at on Saturday. Not only is the dune gone, but idiots are driving onto the beach now because there is nothing to stop them now. Pretty sure it's illegal to drive your vehicles on the beach. The waves were really heavy yesterday, hence a lot of surfers were about. Beautiful day down there except for the knuckleheads driving their cars on the beach.

👍 Wow. Hard to believe...miles of beach gone. Vacationed there for years starting in the 60's.

The real issue is that barrier islands are temporary land. All of these resorts should be uninsureable. The "landowners " want someone else to pay for the protection of their properties. Unpopular to say, and sad for all of us with childhood memories, but facts don't care about feelings.

Joey, this is scary. Not much time left to remedy this. Can you get a State or federal judge to declare an emergency.

The engineers need to put in an underwater jetty that runs parallel with the shoreline. This would hold back strong waves and sand can be put in between the jetty and the shoreline. I think that might work.

That is a great idea. I am sure the city is aware of this option. But they keep pressing for the "band aid" of the bulkhead. I question the real agenda of this.

The state of NJ DEP is terrible letting the ocean to invade Wildwood. They should definitely replenish the beach in North Wildwood
@lostdrewid
@lostdrewid 3 месяца назад
I mean, they literally *can't* replenish the beach, but they absolutely COULD and MUST approve the bulkhead. Unless they have a change of heart it's going to take an appeal to the state Supreme Court to override them, and I hope that happens before the salt water fully breaches the streets.

All the barrier isles are dunes subject to wind and wave. It's all headed for Delaware. Though slowly.

I already wrote a reply to this, but for some reason it did not post. I think it is because I included a link to the Stockton University Costal Research study on North Wildwood’s website. RU-vid probably thinks I was spam or something because I included the link. If they happen to review it and post it, this will read like a double post. The sand is not moving to Delaware. It goes into both the Hereford Inlet as well as deposited on the southern half of the island. In 1910 the Cold Springs Inlet Jetty was built which prevents sand from moving further south. Wildwood Crest and the Cape May Wildlife Refuge Beach grows each year because of this barrier to the south.

Forgive me for saying, but as a round year resident for many years, I hope people realize that it's more than losing your spot on the beach. It's what's happening to our world right now. The DEP is not going to save these beaches, millions have already been spent. We have to change our ways for the future of our children.

@@LuckyLeprechon No , I'm saying you and me need to change our ways to save this planet. These beaches are going away for a reason and barriers are not going to stop the sea.

@@barbaragillespie393 I agree. I also live with that in mind daily. Although it’s a great mindset for long term. It doesn’t make for an immediate impact in our current situation and what is needed now.

@@LuckyLeprechon My heart breaks each day I go to the seawall. I love this community. Its been a joy to live here most of my life. This situation is practically punching us in the face and still no one wants to hear or see the effects of us destroying our world. Dolphins are beached by the dozens each year and people are just concerned with their vacations. Its so much bigger than that. I just hope people notice. I'm all for trying what they can to restore these beaches but in reallity its a quick fix for a couple months and only gets worse.

Also this whole bulkhead issue I believe is an attempt at the city of North Wildwood to extend the boardwalk to 2nd avenue. In order to do this one would need a bulkhead to protect the future business that would be on this boardwalk. Some slimy politicians in North Wildwood has most likely drawn this out as a long term plan of theirs. There has not been a bulkehead there for years. Why all of a sudden now? If you are a govt official working in North wildwood and reading this please ask yourself " how much development is enough?" It is a small town and can only support so many people. Not to mention this town already makes a very disproportionate amout of revenue compared to its year round population. Where is all that money really going?

Look at your own drone videos. Sea walls create and speed up erosion. This is factually proven and very evident on every beach where there are sections with and without sea walls. The areas where there is no sea wall has more beach. What needs to happen is one of 2 things. Either have a massive beach renourishment project to add millions of cubic yards and create rows and rows of dunes so the ocean has something to chew on when it will eventually reach those dunes. Or #2, get ready to move because the ocean is coming. Putting up sea walls is exactly what you don't want to do. I'm an engineer for one of the biggest dredging companies in the world so I know a little something something.

The Towns & the Army Core of Engineers screwed with mother nature & she is getting them back. The Engineers redone Cape may Point beach & RUINED some of the best surf fishing in Jersey. I never fished it again after they got done with it. They destroyed all the mussel banks & rock cropping's under the water that held & attracted the fish. After 35 years, I never fished that beach again because they ruined it for fishing.Leave it to them & Govt. to screw everything up. Bottom line is, you want to build near the water, prepare for the consequences. " DO NOT SCREW WITH MOTHER NATURE. "
