I was at the game as a teenager. We were standing at the other end from where Best scored. At the time I wasn’t surprised that the referee disallowed it because it looked from where I was standing that Best kicked the ball out of Banks hands. The next day on TV it looked like Banks threw the ball up and forward thereby putting the ball into play so the goal should have stood. NI were by far the better team and were robbed by the English goal either a handball by Lee or offside by Clarke take your pick. Some of the more excitable fans actually waited for a couple of hours afterwards to “discuss “ their differences of opinion with the Referee. Just a few impressions from the day- Sammy Nelson for me was MOTM - Bobby Moore strolled through the game and was a Rolls Royce of a footballer - Best rather than having a strong individual game performed well within the team. Sorry for going on a bit but all in all it was a memorable day .

Great video! My two favourite goalkeepers in superb form that day. And Best at his best. Remember this watching this as a 7 year old. Fond memories.

Some footballing greats amongst those players, probably most of them to be fair. Listening to the comments of two of our best strikers of the day was interesting. A time when I loved the game and knew the names of most top teams.

As an Englishman I was glad at the time that Best's effort was disallowed...but it was a goal.

The George Best goal was legitimate. The ball was out of the keepers hands.

Thank you for uploading this one. I have enjoyed evaluating this older era of football through your uploads. Talent was definitely there back in the day for sure. Some differences (compared to modern era) in level of technique and systems of play resulted in open games for sure.

Enjoyed watching that game as it brought me back to my playing days and the way football was played in those days. Goalie kicked the ball up then midfielders would tussle and usually an attack came of it one way or the other. Now it’s more BACK than forward and 10 passes to achieve what one goal kick did. Bobby Moore was superb as was Banks and Jennings

It was a great game to watch! Theres always something good about the late 1960s and early 70s football games, with the hard ball and rough pitches with some great players who didnt get scared to get dirty! Plus with the two greatest goal keepers in the world at that time on the park. That was a brilliant save from big pat jeninngs from that martin peters header in the second half, i thought that was a goal and a bett peters did too. I thought big pat could get to shots or headers faster than gordon banks, plus i loved the way big pat could just take the ball with one hand strait out the sky. George best played well but not great, he wasnt in the game as much. But when he was he was brilliant! And that was a goal, banks threw the ball up and forward and out of his hands, so that means he put the ball into play? Its not that hard to see. Put it this way if pat jeninngs did that at the other end first and martin peters did what george did it would have been allowed. If banks knew it was a foul then why did he chase after best to then try and foul him by grabbing him back then he tried to save it by throwing himself in his own goal.

Jennings & Banks the 2 best goalkeepers in the world. The save from Derrick 'The Doog' Dougan reminded me off his lauded Mexico save. The Doog had the worst legs of any footballer, those knobbly knees with the contrast of the coolest-ness of George 'el Beatle' Best. This must of been the last or plus 1 Windsor match against England due to the Troubles. I done 2 Tours over there. Had a great time.

Northern Ireland did give England a run for their money. A hotly disputed England winning goal plus the disallowed George Best goal were the difference.

Ni deserved a win or a draw at least. They played better for most of the game. I always wanted to see the most if not all of this game. So thancks for the upload this is great stuff. I was suprised at how quiet best was in this game and didnt play that well. Apart from a couple of bits of showmanship and that brilliant goal wich was a goal and every one knew it. Banks threw the ball up plus forward to kick it up field so it was in play. And best didnt even touch him, and if banks knew it was a foul then why did he chase after best as if his life dependended on it. Plus tried to pull best back, btw? So it was banks that touched best and he tried to even grabb his shoulder but 3 keepers wouldnt of held best back. Then banks makes a dive to try and save it. And by the way this is a goal keeper that already knows its a foul btw. Instead of just going strait to the referee to say "its ok ref a know its a foul" banks didnt do that, he played on becouse he knew it wasnt a foul and tried so hard to save it and his blushes, and he never knew that was going to happen just like the whole of britain. Banks picks the ball up and george is standing infront of him wich happens, then banks trys to be fly he does a 4 second sort of fast side to side dance in wich way to go with the ball in his hands to then kid on hes going to kick it as he goes to his right but best blocks him so banks goes to his left and throws the ball up and forward to kick it up field but then best strikes like a viper and knocks the ball over banks head and for about 3 seconds banks doesnt even know where the ball is lol and george is now chasing it with banks chasing best to try and stop him, he trys to pull his top, then he trys to pull his shoulder becouse banks knows i cant let him score here even if i have to jump on his back a will do it. Am pml. Banks is thincking? 'surely not this cant be happening here and now and the saves from the 1970 world cup will be forgotten about if best makes me look just a total clown here as he has done at least 6 times this year alone' lol. And its true. George best scored about 6 brilliant goals against banks in 3 or 4 month in just 1971. He made great goal keepers look average, he did the same to big pat jeninngs. But in 1 game against stoke in the 20th march 1971 he scored two of the best goals i have seen in the 1970s. His first goal i just cant stop watching, its how he did it that gets me? He ran onto a charlton long pass then best got into the box on the left and kind of turnend to show the defender the ball to draw him in and he did and as he tackled him best was to quick and he cought his right foot really hard and best wobbled a bit and he could have went down easy to get a penalty but he didnt that wasnt bests way and some how in the same motion or movement as he wobbled a bit to the side he was right on the edge of the 6 yard line and at the corner of it and as banks came out to block him best just hit it with alot of power into the roof of the net with the side of his left foot. I thought how did he do that. Then his second goal ten minutes later, a cross came into the box and a stoke player had it till best took it from him and from 10 yards out banks came running out to block it, then george turnend to go left and banks bought the dummy then best took the ball round to his right and just walked past banks who was lieying on the mud then just rolled it in. It was sheer genius.

Another fascinating England match from the early 70s. Ramsey was rebuilding and the England defense here looks uncharacteristically shaky at times, especially in the first half and again in the second when they conceded corner after corner. Until the second half the England forwards hardly seem to be there either, which would become a common problem. Banks was brilliant, but gentleman that he was you can see that he is getting very peeved with the harassment by the Irish forwards, and perhaps a little annoyed with his own defenders as well. The Irish have most of the play, and you have to feel that they deserved to win. Jennings matches Banks in goal and Dougan is far more of a threat than Chivers at center forward. George Best is fun to watch here; he is one of those players who make you go "Oh!" with wonder when you seem them do something astonishing. He isn't intimidated by anything or by anyone's reputation. He steals the ball from Bobby Moore, knocks it out of Gordon Banks' hands...he gets a 10 on the Impudence Scale. I especially enjoyed seeing him make mock of Peter Storey, who was infamous as one of the worst clog dancers in football. But oh, how I wish George had taken more shots on goal! It is enjoyable to see him chatting with his old teammate Bobby Charlton. What a pair, the Devil and the Angel.

Interesting match from a historical point of view. Loads of hoof ball football, that you just don't see in the modern game...Bobby Moore was a class act though. His positional reading & literally helping himself to the ball of the oppositional players toe was brilliant... Fleeting moment's of magic from Best, but not one of his better games...Ireland should have won this, if they'd taken their chances. They didn't & got caught with a sucker punch.

Never understood that rule - surely Best's goal should have stood? as soon as the ball leaves the keepers hands, the ball should technically be in play, awful rule that it isn't.

I don't remember anything about the match except George booting the ball out of Banks' hands. Well, I was only nine and still had a few months before double figures. : )

Remember it well , just got in on time to see Bests goal with St Mary's youth club Newcastle co Down.

This match is much more pleasant to watch than modern matches, where they systematically physically attack the ball carrier with each action, since they only risk a yellow card and they come out afterwards during the match.

After watching the world cup 2022 its easy to see watching this match alone how dedicated the players were, as in they chase every ball. And the forwards chase up every defender so they cant get time on the ball. This is much better football, and then you had george best. Only a clown says he wouldnt be great in todays game. Best would have it far to easy today. Great players will know what i mean.

British football is very primitive - not much change since then - now too most of the time - pass to the side and cross. Its unwatchable. I dont know how someone can think its attractive to watch ball flying in air most of the time.
