The Northern Marine 57 is in a size range that will make her appealing to owner/operators wanting to stretch their legs. She’s designed to offer the same seaworthiness as her larger siblings but is not so large that she's difficult to manage and afford. Her reputation precedes her and we’re happy to have finally gotten aboard for a test.

I lived near Anacortes in the 1990s...the heyday of Northern Marine. They were a hard working bunch of dedicated craftsmen. I remember when Sorcha was completed. I was aboard her in Vancouver. Magnificent falls short of describing her. I hope they are successful with their restart. A great American yard with a proud history.

I like the generator powered get home feature. Another main engine with separate fuel source and electrical components would be ideal in a "go anywhere" boat. Also, for an owner operated craft, a remote helm control would be handy.

I'll admit - I'm not a fan of single engine boats...never have been since I was on one when the engine died 80 miles offshore. That said, with the generator option on this one, that is a thing of the past. Nick from Aquaholic puts it best; the is a proper little ship. I truly like this one!

Almost the perfect boat for me. An anchor wash drain and emergency tiller can always be added. I would also add Some half doors in the pilot house to get a little air. Really the only issue for me personally is that I like little more power, preferably to get her up to at least 14 knots to outrun some storms or approaching weather.

4:25 I love this alternative idea to a wing engine. Plus, I'm also thinking of the extra drag and engineering of installation of a secondary propeller shaft, and engine, as opposed to just one hole in the boat that needs to be completely water sealed, while also allowing the shift the spin as frictionless as possible... ...Which sounds like a contradiction in terms. As in water tight seal ruggedness verses as little friction as possible to reduce frictional losses. As

3:04 Again, thank you for this great advice Captain Steve. The pain of that will hopefully get it to only happen once. But it is interesting how people can ignore safety things until it does cause an accident. Thank God that's just a minor thing though. I remember in metalwork class in school, a few guys got away with got using eye protection at the bench drills...then it became a thing...then I felt a subconscious pressure to not wear the eye protection because who else was...then a kid had a peice of metal go into his eye and the teacher had just gotten back from the hospital or doctor, at the start of our class, and he told us the news...basically health and safety classes from my experience are just a list of does and dont's, followed by horror stories of what happened to men that ignored those rules. I agree with this. Some guys just needed a smack as a child, and didn't get it.

Wow , what a great looking yacht and very good range at a reasonable speed too. I hope you post the internal tour as well at some stage . I think this is my new favorite trawler yacht. On a side note , not having a second engine (but having a generator get you home in an emergency) would be a good cost saving as well as less maintance of second motor/transmission/seals /shaft and propeller and another through hull fitting that could go wrong. Thanks Captain Steve.

A good review. As you state - quite often the 'get you home' wing engine may not have the capacity to get you to your destination, depending on the prevailing conditions. BUT- as for the 'availability/start on demand' - that is something that the sensible owner can assure (with significant load tests, not just start and stop). The ultimate redundancy for a 57ft would be twin engine, and suffer the slight reduction in propulsion efficiency on one engine. BUT - you know you can continue with the same cruising speed, with an (almost) total redundancy.

@simonmackie3481 2 года назад
Actually that could mean just a 15-30 min or less run on the wing every week so is liable to be damp and not fully warmed through when you shut it down. Far better to use the generator for the get you home.
@callmewheels4806
@callmewheels4806 2 года назад
@@simonmackie3481 Actually no. As an engineer, I can assure you the thought process during the design phase thoughtfully considered the amount of engine runtime the wing engine was in operation. Nordhavn is a vessel designed Solely for ventures abroad in environments considered Hostile where pleasure or traditionally designed motor yachts would never entertain. As such, Everything is designed with security /redundancy as their hallmark. The wing engine is a Wholly separate means of propulsion that share No systems with the primary engine (fuel/electronics/prop-shaft or prop) such that any aforementioned components when fouled Would leave the “other” vessels stranded. As to your comment about the generator being a preferred recovery option. Imagine having to rely on a Generator and its ancillary systems (e.g. switchgear) with approximately 41 HP driving a hydraulically coupled shaft as your sole means of safety. Immediately there are several points of failure that could render you immobile. The other option is a 110HP engine and systems dedicated Solely to propulsion. The latter is “my” preference.

Great review as usual Captain! I've been following Northern Marine ever since Spirit of Zopilote came on the scene, and wow, are they ever amazing vessels! The 64 was always my favourite until they refreshed the 57 and just wow! The "get somewhere" approach that NM uses is a very good option, as are others mentioned here; depending on the issue encountered, one option will be better or worse than the others. One disappointment though was your slide by of the exhaust system; yes, the exhaust does get wet before it leaves the vessel, but it has a dry muffler, is keel cooled, and the water is mixed with the exhaust just before it leaves. Innovative system!

I'm not a big fan of asymmetric superstructure, there are several marinas in the area where you must dock as directed by staff so you could be forced to tie up where your superstructure is not allowing you to do so safely. The big flaw with the main propeller for the emergency drive is: what if the problem is the propeller itself rather than the engine? The last point is an automatic out: touch screens do not respond reliably enough to my touch, so nothing with a touch screen is acceptable.

I guess a secondary way to drive the main shaft as a "get home" feature is good as long as the problem is not with the main shaft or propeller. I wonder if a hydraulic driven wing shaft option might be a better choice from a redundancy perspective.

What a nice boat! Only Problem with having that one prop solution I see is with debris like a ghostnet cloging the shaft and prop. A separat Engine with a folding prop would be Great redundancy but at a cost ofcourse. That Argument your pointing out at been able to start that engine that isn’t been used a lot I don’t understand to be honest. After all ihr is a second Engine and ofcourse before going to remote places you check tec and Not just Jump on and off you go 🤷‍♂️ Meaning it sure is redundancy Even though ofcourse there is a Little Chance of two broken engines all the time Same as two broken/cloged props. Secondly I don’t know about your 3kn flat out Wing engine Argument. In our marina hast been a Nordhavn using that tec that we „speed“ up to 5.2kn ok Wingengine (Testing tec for a Client Leasing for a Trip to tromsø, Norway) Never the less: I love that boat! That's the theory. To put that to the Literal Test this Vessel should be a long term loaner for Captain Steve and the rest of us to review and comment as that's the only way of knowing especially if serious about competing with Bering and Nordhavn. Great review but no way is this sufficient if you're actually trying to sell this Brand. Still might be starting to see some Tesla influences in the Expedition Yacht segment. An interesting warship view of this matter you can research the US Marine Corps "Makin Island" which as a one off Hybrid Drive Platform later became and is now the "America Class" *LCS?* i think they're known as. A number of boat builders build self righting power boats, Seahorse Marine, the designs based on the XPM range, the Watson range, and another UK builder just off the top of my head, there are many more, actually build explorer power yachts that if they get knocked down, they have a better than good/almost always, chance to right themselves. At 4:25 "wing engine typically pushing 2.5 knots...". Not so, let's take a typical Nordhavn 64 with 475 hp main and 160 hp wing. At leisurely and economical 7.5 knots the main engine delivers about 160 hp, same as wing engine max hp. In tests the wing engine alone pushes the boat 5-6 knots, which is good considering the smaller less efficient propeller set at the side. Where does your "2.5 knots" come from? Out of a hat? A single main propeller can be damaged also, by the way, with a wing engine there is true redundancy. If it is used to run docking hydraulics (thrusters, anchor etc) also it also gets used often enough to keep ie alive, like in Nordhavns.

Main engine in the N64 is 425hp. Wing engine will push it 4-5 knots in normal conditions, less if rough weather.

@@Timinwa My friend's N64 achieved 6 knots with the 160 hp Lugger, like I said, main engine running at about 160 hp pushed the boat 7.5 knots using 25 liters per hour (1200 rpm) , 87 liters ar full throttle (1870 rpm).

For the man whom longs for a Nordhavn. Taking subtle jabs at the Nordhavn doesn’t make this a better vessel. The Nordhavn is a far more polished vessel and DOES have the wing engine you suggest is a negative. The wing engine is a system WHOLEY independent of the primary power and drive. It IS USED OFTEN for the thrusters and other ancillary hydraulics. The wing engine has a separate fuel supply, shaft and prop creating a Genuinely redundant system to return to port. As for speeds using the wing engine, you cite 3 or 4 knots. Take a look at ANY Nordhavn spec and 5 to 6 knots are the norm. Lastly, this vessels “back-up” drive system is a Generator (approx. 41 HP) coupled hydraulically to the main shaft. What would you do if the prop is fouled? If you find comfort in this being your LAST SHOT to return to port, by all means, write the check.

A 57ft with a single engine? It's recommended to have 2 engines to go to the islands off of LA, and that's for a much smaller boat. Are you suuure? This looks more like a great lakes machine, than something meant for the ocean.

A lot of Trawler-type long-range boats have one engine. This one has a PTO that runs off of a generator. That's your backup.

Northern Marine's heritage comes from hard working Alaskan commercial fishing vessels. This is built off an Alaska limit seiner proven hull.

Very disappointing. Didn't show any of the living,dining or cabin quarters. Could've done a lot better.

I like it. But, as usual no price as tested. It would be helpful to know how big of a bank job we need to pull. 😅

John Deer farm tractor when one sensor goes bad the whole tractor shuts down. The farmer has to have the tractor transported sometimes hundreds of miles to get it fixed costing a small fortune in towing charges. What a waste.
