This is a video of a ride out through the Derbyshire Dales on my 1975 Norton Commando 850 MKIII Roadster - electric start. I completely restored the bike a few years ago, with a few upgrades - improved electric start, Tri-spark electronic ignition, uprated front brake, earlier air filter, stainless steel parts throughout, oil pressure gauge, Amal Premier carbs. etc. The bike has run faultlessly since the rebuild and I'm really impressed with it - a really great '70s superbike.

Beautiful. I had a Mk2a back in the day. Many bikes since but it's the Commando that generates the nostalgia- guess I need to buy another but it would have to be a Mk 3 now. Regards need to tickle when warm, it's probably more to do with radiant heat below the bowl- tends to burn off the radicals hence need to tickle and get some fresh fuel in- this is known problem in some light aircraft which are closely cowled and it's a pain so fit electric pump to prime and vents to let the heat escape.

Another example of extreme beauty ranged from the ticking sounds cooling down to completely quiet stillness coming from the thunderous roars of motion done with it! Only the individual mating upon them can determine the height of love gained for them can ever be. I fell in love many times with many motorcycle machines and indeed the love for this model lives on within me decades of years later.

It's in great shape. I had a 75, CB 750 four, that I had for 12 years but had to sell it to pay a sudden bill. Made me sad but such is life. My friend in the army had a Norton commando. This was in 70, so must have been an older model. Very quick. Especially carrying the two of us. Sweet looker too. My last bike is what I have now, my 2005 triumph t 100. They are classic s, no doubt. Thanks for the look see. Ride safe.

@@peterwilliamson4296 Hello back Peter, Sure, it depends on the year. Anything from the 60s and 70s, are classic enough to turn heads. But sure, the rarity of Norton's makes them desirable though constantly in need of tuning. At least from my memory. Maybe the newer models were created to not need valve adjustment 1nce a month and whatever else needed tuning. But yes, I owned the 75 Honda from 87, to 2005. And all I did was replace worn out parts. The pipes seemed so thin, i had to replace one whole side. They had small rust holes on the bottom of the outer skin and I finally replaced it with factory. Still, had more hp than the t100. But I like um both. Both for style and sound. It's a certain person that likes classic over power. But at 69, both are plenty sufficient now, haha. I had a VMAX during the time with the Honda. Got my need for speed during those years. Now it's just a weekend ride now and then, just to keep both her and me in tune. Maybe one of the grandkids may want her. But they live up north, so winter is too hard and dangerous to ride too much. Oh to be younger again. Take care.

The Triumph Trident 750 runs much hotter than the Norton Commando and because of the heat of the motor it evaporates the gas in the carburetors. That's why the Norton doesn't have an oil cooler. I am + 60 and I love using the kickstarter on my sidecar Ural because I can show the Harley boy how you start a real motorcycle.

In America there were people who were having accidents starting out with Japanese motorcycles that shifted on the left and when they went onto British bikes and shifted on the right they would have accidents so the American government said all the motorcycles had to have the gear shift on the left hand side. Harley-Davidson Sportster had the shift on the right hand side like the British bikes and had to change it to conform to the regulation. The Trident Triumph had a for brush electric starter where is the Norton Commando had the 2 brush starter which is why it didn't work as opposed to the triumph which had the 4 brush starter. They were going to use a 4 brush starter but they decided to cheap out and use a 2 brush starter. When they were making the Prototype they used a 4 brush starter. That one worked. Norton always used the cheapest of everything because they weren't a big manufacturer like BSA or Triumph. Their Penny wise pound foolish attitude was the thing that sank them all. So sad.
@keithhoughton4308

Apparently the original starters were NOS when they fitted them so they called it " electric assistance ". I guess they still expected you to kick the bike as you pushed the button!

When Bert Hopwood went to Norton originally with the idea of making a 4-cylinder like the brm4. Seeing the Antiquated production Machinery that they had, they asked him to design a motorcycle that they could put into production with the Machinery they had. Chain drive of the valve was cheaper than a Gear Drive. With a Magneto engine you could adjust the timing chain without messing up the timing but when they went to points oh, you had to retime the bike Everytime You adjusted the timing chain. They never had the money to upgrade the engine because as Edward Turner of Triumph Fame would say they spend too much on racing their motorcycles. They also spent a fortune on motorcycle and in magazines, but they would cheapen critical parts when they should have used good parts in the first place because the warranty cost of the combat Motors and other deficiencies mechanical and otherwise sank the company.

I wish the manufacturers had made everything tank and sheet metal frame as much as they could out of stainless because stainless never rust out over time and so it pays for itself in the long run.

The Gopro camera has two weaknesses: First of all it makes me look like I'm going twice as fast as I actually am (check the speedo) and secondly it shows massively reduced visibility ahead compared to what the rider can see in reality. Makes me look like a kind of daredevil rider though! 😅😉

The isolastics are great, and this being a MKIII, are easily adjusted. Cameras are always a problem as they are so expensive. Mine are a few years old now but cost about £300 each. I'm very aware of their limitations, especially regarding sound, but at the moment the cost of buying new kit is beyond my means. PS You may have noticed that despite having a rear view camera there is no footage from it on the video - that's because it's getting a bit old now and simply refused to record on the day.😒

For some reason the name Veglia (or some such spelling) is coming to mind for the clocks ? And as regards the torque of the bike, my old '76 reg Mk 3 caused me to play with it and lose a pillion one day in Golders Green traffic - all I knew about it was a pair of boots hitting me under my armpits.... oh how we laughed at the pub later on !

@Chris.rooke150
@Chris.rooke150 2 года назад
I'm not an expert on Norton History but I believe that Commandos were originally made at Andover and then at Andover and Wolverhampton, and from 1973 onwards, just at Wolverhampton. After the collapse of NVT in 1975 a final few bikes were assembled back in Andover using any remaining parts from the collapsed company. So as mine is a 1975 MKIII, I think it was indeed built at Wolverhampton.

@Chris.rooke150

That's entirely a matter of personal opinion. If by better you mean disc rear brake, electric start, good switch gear, adjustable isolastics, a self-adjusting primary chain, and left foot gear change, then yes, but if you're not bothered about all that, or believe that proper Commandos shouldn't have electric start (coz you're a Luddite 😉) and don't like the massive air filter, then maybe no. 🤔😉
