Magnificent towering Norway Spruce (Picea abies) buried in heavy snow create an absolutely magical scene at 6,500 feet high in the southern Swiss Alpes near the San Bernardino pass and the village of San Bernardino! This may be the most planted tree both inside and outside its native range. Like other pines its pyramidal shape helps it shed the heavy alpine snows. Its strong wood make it a desired source of wood for construction as well as in paper making. In the Swiss Alps, forests are managed not just for beauty, recreation, lumber and wildlife but for safety of its citizens. Many villages are located in the bottom of valleys and trees help prevent mass movement of the snow pack. See the video to learn much more and several surprising facts about spruce trees and music!
