Learn how I make time-lapses like this on www.mastertime...
See the behind the scenes here: • The Smartphone Project...
Smartphone manufacturers have been coming with some really bold claims lately. "Shoot like a pro", "DSLR like quality" are some of the claims we have seen. I wanted to test out how good these cameras really are today.
I went out on a road trip around Western Norway to really push my smart phone to the limit. What do you think of the result? Do the smartphone makers have right in their claim? Let me know what you think in the comments!

OK...so PLEASE no haters...but even in the hands of you, Morten, even a phone can take great pics and timelapses. But none of this compares to you other work. You skills and methods are stupendous and nearly perfect as an art form. Your camera timelapses are at times surreal and at others simply gorgeous with bright colors, clarity and resolution. These phone videos are very pretty, but they lack that "ting" sound like when you hit a crystal glass. Thank you for sharing your talents with us, but don't ditch the camera just yet...they are not ready for you. :)

Incredible timelapse video. But for those who may think "gear doesn't matter" after watching this video, it is not that simple. First, this is not a 200€ smartphone, this is an expensive one, and with that money you can buy a nice dslr or mirrorless camera with a big sensor and great optical quality lenses that will give you better image quality and much more dynamic range, allowing you to produce great pictures in low light conditions or in high contrast situations (things that phones still can't do very well right now, with those tiny sensors). Go watch the behind the scenes video for this timelapse because Morten talks about some of the limitations he had using the phone. Also, you'll see that it's not just the camera, he also used a lot of accesories to make this great timelapse (tripods, slider, motorized equipment, filters, powerbank for the phone...) And, of course, you also have to take into account all it takes to go and shoot in those incredible landscapes, and all the skills he has in photography and postproduction. So yes, it's true that smartphone technology has evolved a lot in recent years, and they're capable of doing increasingly more things that some years ago were only possible with a dslr, but there's still a big difference with a real camera, and a camera is still the proper tool for the job, 90% of times.

You are right but look at it in another perspective. The phone could cost 800 euro ... for this money you can buy some startup DSLR and lens. Definitely not a pro kit. You wanna good fast lens 800 euro is just price for the glass, middle range body another 800 euro. .... or ... you can buy a phone for 800 euro, that brings a pretty good results with good lighting. On top of that you can use phone for calling, web browsing, GPS navigation and so on .... but mostly, you have it always with you. So for me this option is way more versatile. Once you are more serious about photography you will always reach the point of buying a proper DSLR/mirrorless :)
@aaronalbores3999
@aaronalbores3999 4 года назад
@@krajca666 I didn't do the testing or the research, but I think you can easily outperform the quality of an expensive smartphone with a 800€ dslr kit in good light. In poor light situations, the camera kit you need to outperform a smartphone is much cheaper than that. Of course this will change in the future, but a dedicated device will always be better in quality, in versatility, in handling, in durability, than a multipurpose device. In the end, it will depend on how commited you are with photography, and everyone will have different needs and opinions. The smartphone camera is very convenient (even i use it sometimes) and it's perfect if you're just going to take a bunch of pictures every now and then. The good thing is that we have all those options available for us.

@@krajca666 Quite true, but there are some staggering deals in the second hand market. My friend bought a second hand camera in a box for $750. I should point out he is a professional so knew what he was buying. His mother went crazy about the price. He sold the negatives that came with it for $3,000 to a newspaper. Then onsold the camera for $1200.

What I think is striking here, on top of the quality of the images is the "style" which IMO makes it instantly recognizable: ten seconds into the video and it's clear it's you. My idea is that if you can shoot a great quality timelapse with an entry level APS-C DSLR or mirrorless camera why shouldn't it be possible with a phone? Most of the current smartphones now can shoot RAW files which open up a lot of possibilities in post production, which is where the sequence is actually made (and where I think you really make it shine). Not sure the dynamic range and resolution would give the same result as a 50MP A7IV, but for YT use I don't think there's gonna be that much difference. Oh, did I mention it's a killer video?

Some say gear doesn’t matter. Some say it does. I believe what matters is the story you’re trying to tell and the tools you are using to tell it. A camera phone may be the perfect tool for your project. A DSLR may not be. Camera phones may not be able to do it all but they do have a place in this field. You use what you have to tell your best story. In the end, most won’t care whether it was shot on a RED camera or an iPhone. Keep taking what the camera gives.

The results are definitely "good", but hard to really compare to DSLR without a little context: Are the telephoto shots taken with accessory lenses, or are those the phone's internal zoom? The definition of the opening text is not as high as the following scenes, so something isn't perfect there. The quality of the time-lapse is very good, no skipping, very smooth. Photographically decent color*, good contrast, good balance, and the long-exposure segments are good. I don't see any glaring weaknesses in the quality needed to view it on RU-vid, but I'll go stream it to our 54" TV and see if the quality still holds up. So the SmartPhone option seems reasonable for situations where DSLR plus accessories is too much gear to carry. *a better place to compare color and image quality is in your "Behind The Scenes" video. The higher quality of a DSLR is much clearer when comparing DSLR video images at the 10:14 mark vs the Phone images at 10:21+ marks... In a separate note; once again the music is matched perfectly to the cinematography.. well done Thomas Leypoldt!

Stunning scenes as always Morten. As we talked about this summer it's amazing what can be achieved with a phone by now. You just proved it 😍 💪 I watched it on my big TV, just to check the details more clearly. The details shows it has less dynamic range and is not as crisp as with our big cameras.. Which was expected (otherwise I have some heavy cameras for sale soon 😅) I guess night scenes is also hard to make good enough at this point in dimm light. However, this beautiful video clearly shows that with knowledge people can create something absolutely stunning even with their phone 🔥 beautiful video! 👍 //Henrik
