Enough with people going back to these reviews saying "Huh, bet Doug feels pretty bad now! These movies are great!" just because Robin is dead now. It doesn't change the films at all, and it doesn't make the review any less competent. It's pretty fucking stupid for anyone to praise and love a movie now, even though they enjoyed the Critic making fun of it before, just because one of it's stars is now dead. News flash people: EVERY person who's EVER been in any movie will be dead one day too. Will that automatically make the movies that they were in great and classic, even if they were awful before? And the fact that it was suicide doesn't change it at all, either. A film is a film.
Seriously. If actors and actresses dying suddenly meant that all of their work was excellent, then John Wayne's "The Conqueror" was freaking cinematic masterpiece, and the film hall of fame can look forward to eventually including brilliant works such as Troll 2, Pocket Ninjas, and The Room among its numbers. After all, eventually the people involved in those movies will all be dead, which by the RU-vid comment section's line of reasoning means that all of those performers, and all of the films they've been involved in, will suddenly be amazing. This entire "OMG, u shud feel badz becuz u didnt liek a movee & teh actur es ded" nonsense is completely ridiculous, and basically amounts to a crapton of idiots trivializing a man's death by turning it into an excuse to bitch about a critic not liking a movie. Never mind that Williams never seemed to have trouble laughing at himself (at least, not from anything I've seen of him), or that Doug Walker has said on several occasions (including in these reviews) that he likes Robin Williams and even used him as inspiration for his own comedy.
As blunt as it is, I agree. Robin Williams death doesn't make his movies immune to criticism, just as Cliff Burton being dead doesn't make Metallica immune to it.
Laura Drinnon I don't know. He wasn't the best character but I liked him. He was smart and inventive, plus it was cool to see him grow up. The only thing I didn't like was the way his character was phased out in the end. He was headed for Starfleet the whole time and then he does a complete 180 in his very last episode. Then we never heard about him again. BIG-LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT!!!
OK what the hell is up with people bashing Doug when it comes to Robin Williams. 1. The Nostalgia Critic is a character. So majority of the time his opinions are either different and/or exaggerated. 2. Doug has gone on record by saying he loved Robin Williams. 3. He doesn't mock him as a person. He's just saying and/or wandering why Williams always stars in films that either mock or abuse his talents. In his reviews he mocks the movies, writing, directors and any other elements that made the film suck. Robin Williams is a great actor. He just happened to have a questionable choice when it comes to starring in movies. 4. Just because you like something doesn't mean you're not allowed to point out it's flaws. 5. Everyone has hit and miss moments and Robin was no exception. Even the greatest actors of all time had been in crap movies. In fact i dare anyone to find an actor who has never starred or been a part of a flop.
I think the 'bashing' is more an outlet for peoples emotions, considering they feel like they lost someone important when Robin Williams died. A bit silly considering most of us only knew him through his performances, but I guess that's the power of making people laugh since childhood. Otherwise, it's obviously just a bunch of trolls trying to start pointless arguments. It's actually VERY obvious that most of the 'bashing' is just trying to start arguments, or even prompt comments like these... I think after Michael Jackson, we all know that there's nothing wrong with criticizing someone. Their death does not erase their mistakes, and a LOT of complaints the NC is shouting at Robin Williams really has more to do with the story and direction of the movie than it does Williams himself. I think it's pretty admirable that NC has never said "God, Robin williams isn't even trying in this movie.", cause it really seems like he brings at least SOME amount of energy and passion to almost every role I've seen so far. It's kinda special.
EthanUnken Yeah that's the thing with him. No matter how crappy the role is he gave it his best. It's just that his best at times isn't enough to survive bad writing.
***** Kid, you have no idea what you are talking about. But if you must find another example, he has been known to chastise others with differing opinions from his own in real thought vids and in other various situations where he talks to fans. And his perspective is not a good one. In his dumbasses in distress vid, he used that as a way of telling people that in his eyes, people who are weak in either mind, strength or both are unfit to live. That is Social Darwinism, and Social Darwinism is typically found under fascist or communist regimes. He also complains about cliche and wanting something new. But the bitter truth is, nothing is new anymore. Every story and every trope is known today. It doesn't matter how often something is used, what matters is how it's used when it's used. And he uses his charisma and loud voice to sway people into agreeing with him, those who refuse get trolled either by him or his fans. Face it kid, Doug Walker owns you're brain and soul. Let him go and follow what YOU'RE heart and brain tells you, not what Walker tells you.
It was uploaded in 2011. I don't know for sure but I believe it was actually officially made and published by NC prior.(Feel free to make me look like a dumbass and do the research to show it was made in 2011 though)
***** Idk if you're a troll or not. But if you're not a troll all I have to say is. You don't have to like Robin, but a lot of people did/do. He left his mark on entertainment. And there's really nothing you can do about that no matter how much you hate him.
+Chad Jones you re so right. i mean they close a college that has a guy who invented a flying robot with artificial intelligence!! HELLOOO??? every major company in the world should camp on his damn doorstep, trying to bribe him with whatever he likes to get him to work for them!!
Malefizia Professor was really humble. He created Weebo for himself, not for a show. He was genius though, indeed. But it's the same what his enemy said, he was a man of science but he had no clue about "selling" himself and his stuff. He couldn't use his talent to improve his life, was kind of antisocial. You know what I mean. Was very humble and straight as well. These are not characteristic of a wealthy successful businessman or whatever. He did hide in a mask of an average man who's just doing his job. Didn't want to be famous. And he thought that the only way he could save his career was creating something extraordinary EVEN for himself (which was beyond other people dreams). Which was too much. A little cunning mind would be enough to gain anything with his abilities.
Profiledek guess you re right. still that logical whole somehow bugs me. all in all the movie was ok, i prefered the classic version in black and white but this one comes close...except for the flubber dance part ^^
+TXF I always thought it was pretty decent. One of Robin's more forgettable movies, yet not so painstakingly terrible I want to gouge my eyes out with Pocky.
Chris Sullivan It's actually one of the ones I think of when I hear his name. Flubber, Bicentennial Man, Aladdin, Patch Adams, Ms. Doubtfire. And obviously others, but that's a few of them.
thegreatninjaman I wasn't going to. I actually like quite a few of the movies NC reviews and makes clear he dislikes. Space Jam being one of the more notable ones.
+TXF For me, my top Robin Williams films would be Aladdin, Jumanji, Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs Doubtfire, so not that far away from your list! But mostly, I'm a big fan of his stint on Whose Line Is It Anyway?.
Meavy Hetal Okay, I'm done joking around. I will tolerate comments that have a genuine grievance with Robin Williams. I will tolerate people saying they don't like him. But when people start saying they're glad someone is DEAD, that's where I draw the line. Either bring something meaningful and non-hateful to the table or shut up.
I don't think he hung himself, but people are saying that he might've commit suicide but they are not sure. But still, R.I.P. Robin Williams, we will miss you :(
dragonsareawesome123 Corner's report came out today, suicide by asphyxiation is the official cause of death. They also added that he "hung himself with a belt"
Him forgetting his wedding is not believable. I'm absent minded, but I remember big events. I remember flights and road trips. I remember to pay my rent. Those are nothing compared to a wedding. It violates my suspension of belief.
I guess some people legitimately believe that celebrities can't die and think it's incredibly tragic when they finally kick the bucket. Unless it's suicide or murder, but still, it's not like a painting, the movie isn't going to suddenly become an epic and timeless wonder just because one of the stars died.
Just because someone died doesnt mean everything they have made all of a sudden perfect? Doug appears to respect Williams, jusfnot this stupid piece of shit movie.
soulmatesneverdiex I didn't say he didn't, and I'm not saying that he nor I have a negative opinion about Williams. I'm just saying that his death isn't going to suddenly make some movies such as flubber a timeless classic.
It's funny how I see so many comments saying "Check the upload date, idiots. This is before Robin Williams died. Stop hating on the NC." And I see NO posts of ANYONE saying "Wow, the critics an ass. That guys dead." ...Irony is a wonderful thing.
EchoExtremefortheQueen Lol an unexpected result during a predictable situation. Not exact dictionary definition, but that's not the exact case here. What word would you use?
Even if we ignore that this was made long before Robin Williams' suicide, Critic still explicitly states in other reviews that he considered Robin to be both an incredible actor and comedic genius who gets thrown into bad movies.
It's interesting how The late Robin Williams has led me to some good comedy. Let me explain, "Flubber" was a childhood favorite of mine, and even today is still a bit of a guilty pleasure. The NC's review of Flubber was actually the first NC review I've ever seen and I have been hooked ever since. I would like to thank Mr. Williams for giving me comedic joy through my life. I hope Whatever ethereal plane you end up on is a good one.
Pikachu Thirteen in future you could always use the Fallen London method of gender nouns when you don't know the gender. "Good sir...er...ma'...er...yes."
Nostalgia Critics problem with this film is that he thinks of it as a comedy, if you think of it as a child's first science fiction movie, its brilliant.
Wow. Not even Williams could make this character anything less than despicable. He's selfish, clueless, obnoxious and downright mean-spirited at times. But worst of all, he NEVER admits fault! No, with allll the mistakes he made, all the damage he caused and people he hurt, by the end of the film he hasn't learned a single goddamn lesson. What a load.
15:23 _"Wow. So the guy who wrote 'The Breakfast Club' and 'Pretty in Pink' actually had to write the words, "he farted Flubber out of his anus."_ lol.
You know when you know you're basic? When you think Nostalgia Critic should feel guilty because Robin Williams is dead now. It's such a bandwagon, group think "oh, now I love him because he's dead" mentality. He was in shitty movies and personally, I feel like he was overrated. Oh well.
Here's something I think these people need to consider: If Tommy Wiseau were to die in an accident (knock on wood), would The Room suddenly become a masterpiece?
I just hate the mentality of "oh, someone died, we should go find a guy's criticism over something this person did and shame him for it now that he's dead". People did it with Michael Jackson too, going to his Moonwalker review and trying to guilt trip him over it. That's retarded.
I dont care if Robin Williams is dead. Flubber fucking sucked. It sucked in 1997 and it still sucks now. Sure, Robin had good films (Aladdin, Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting) but just cause he's dead doesn't mean his shit films become masterpieces. When Cory Monteith died it didn't mean Glee suddenly became top shit. No. Glee still sucks. Nostalgia critic hated this film because it sucked. That is all
DragonPhlegm Actually, I think you'll find that this is very common. Most artist's works don't get any respect or recognition until they've died. It's silly, for sure, but true. As for Flubber, I loved this movie as a child. As an adult, I find Nostalgia Critic makes very, VERY, valid points, but I still think it's a cute a fun movie. A shitty one, for sure, but still cute. That's just my opinion though. TL;DR, You're absolutely right but this shit happens all the fucking time and I don't know why
John Hughes actually wrote the screenplay by himself. The "other writer" was the guy who wrote the screenplay for the 1961 Absent-Minded Professor original. Bill Walsh was his name. Another thing was that he actually died in 1975, so his credit in the movie was actually posthumous because elements of his original script were kept.
I actually think that the weebo death scene in this movie should be among the top 20 ish saddest moments in movies, cuz Weeboo is the only character thats worth a damn in this movie cuz I fell for her (not in love, but you get it) and cried when she died.
And while dated for today, the scene with Flubber "having a party" was aussome to see back in that day, and to a degree if it was just a youtube clip it would be now. I don't blame NC for feeling that way though as it's like one of three things (1. Weebo mostly and sad when she died 2. That scene I just said. 3. somewhat humour in the out there bad guy, especially when Flubber goes thru him) that I liked in this overall bader/est movie remake of what sounds like another bad movie (seeing this didn't want me to see that, especially cuz both do a basketball scene despite the fact it is cheating).
Come on, if we apply that logic nobody could ever joke about death again. Technically, everyone will die so laughing at someone's death will always end up being awkward
While the movie is a bad remake of a bad flim and the main character is a bad apple, Robin Williams performance was fine and really how was he going to make such a character better than anyone else which would have only made it wrose or the same. Robin Williams RIP you will be dearly missed. #RIPRobinWilliams
Also, why is Bicentennial Man and Man of the Year bad movies? The latter I can somewhat understand yet its not cuz of Robin who was aussome in it or the message of voter faud by electronics. And B man was AUSSOME!!!
epirus500 my sister loves death to smoocy. I haven't seen it all the way threw so I can't say. Does look funny on how these people go after a guy thats like barney.
"But he's approached by that one guy, whose name you can't remember, but always recognise because he's the asshole in every role that his in" Coffee almost went everywhere xD It's so accurate though.
+Shelston So tell me, what exactly is the irony? The fact that Robin's character said that line, then 20 years later Robin himself died? Do you even know what the word "irony" actually means?
It seems like this movie wasn't initially going to be a Flubber remake or something. The subplot where Weebo is romantically infatuated with the professor almost seems too interesting and relevant here to dismiss as just a subplot. It's almost like the writers originally came up with that subplot as the original script for a more creative movie but later decided to smash it into the background so they could just have another shitty remake of an old movie no one remembers. Neat. Dammit...I actually thought Weebo and the professor's relationship was charming and had potential. Why didn't they just build on it? Would've been a lot more interesting than the generic shit smear we got here.
hackman669 Well...see that's the problem. The principal dynamic that made the two characters' relationship interesting was the physical incompatibility between them. The romantic frustration ensuing is what would build a scintillating dynamic. Weebo loves the Prof...but he doesn't love her the same way...so she goes to extreme lengths to appear/become human...while the Prof. dates a human woman...and Weebo gets more sexually frustrated and jealous...maybe starts to go insane and murderously jealous if you're heading for a darker tone in your story. Or Weebo finds a way to be with the Prof. in the end for a lighter story. Having Weebo as just a human woman to start with really kind of kills the whole point. Then it's just another generic romance...but with SCIENTISTS! Wooooh!
Morphiend Interesting dynamic. Would make a good read by itself. Just change the focus of the story around to Weebo's perspective and modify the outcome. A machine that is in love with her creator that is ignored and utterly alone. After several comical attempts to get his attention, Weebo feels heart broken and sulks around the lab in shadows. Suddenly there is a loud noise as two dim witted thieves brake into the lab and steel the flubber formula.
Morphiend Well this idea did get turned into a movie eventually, it just came out in 2013 and was named "Her" and Weebo wasn't voiced by Ariel, she was voiced by Black Widow.
I have been watching Nostalgia Critic so much that I have actually unknowingly adopted his speech habits, for instance I have been trying to break my habit of starting a sentence with 'I mean' and now I know how it started :S but I can't stop watching him, he's too entertaining!
I know Robin is dead, but that doesn't mean everything he did was sacred. He was a great man. The critic made a just review and that shouldn't be changed by the fact that some of the people involved in the film are dead. Jeez, some people need to toughen up. It's unfortunate he died, but that shouldn't change the quality of what he did.
The comments on these Robin Williams movies annoy me to no end. Yes, Robin Williams died, but that doesn't mean that every single one of his movies should be considered a masterpiece because of it. A bad movie is still a bad movie, and no-one should have to feel bad for pointing that out. It's also pretty funny how people were completely agreeing with these reviews until Williams' death, but afterwards they're considered inappropriate and unjustified somehow.
The ending would have been better if the lady finally figured how bad of a husband he would have been and said no to the whole 4th wedding thing that he didn't show upto; and instead he married his AI which obviously is somehow smarter than everyone else in the show.
My teacher put this on not too long ago in my Chemistry Class, but I had no idea what was going on because I couldn't follow because no one in my class would pipe down. Some parts looked interesting, but were only there to do that: Look interesting. Especially the little clips that the robot was showing. Had the name of the clips been displayed, then this movie would have had more forced advertisements than the Inspector Gadget movie.
This was one of those rare movies as a kid (being maybe, like 6 or 7) where I honestly looked at the movie and thought "hey maybe some movies can be godawful"
The movie doesn't seem too horrible. But seriously why would you marry a guy who wouldn't even show up for the wedding? 4 TIMES?! Even if she just loved him THAT much, she should've hogtied him and dragged him to it by the second one. Weddings aren't cheap ya know, plus those guests have lives too, they can't just drop everything whenever you want to get married.
RIP Robin Williams. I remember this film as a kid. Very over the top but Flubber worked with Robin Williams and Jodi Benson voiced the robot who fancied him.
It couldn't have been "the other writer" who was responsible for the worser aspects of this movie because the other credited writer, Bill Walsh, died in the 70's. He was the one who wrote the original Absent Minded Professor movies. Which means that pretty much everything that was wrong with this remake was, unfortunately, the fault of John Hughes.
+Chris Sullivan He's not supposed to see her in her dress before the wedding, it's considered bad luck. But I think now it's done more so he'll be surprised when he sees her come down the aisle.
4:17 _"But . . . . wait a minute. What about f*cking Weebo?"_ I know, right? "I wish I had some unique ideas I could patent, artificially-intelligent, anti-gravitational robot. Now bring me a beer."
funny thing is is that i never watched Star Trek TNG before seeing this. I watched Flubber alot as a kid, so when i finally started watching TNG i was like "Hey is that kid on Flubber?" Now its weird seeing Wesley in Flubber.
JoeRingo118 But he's actually not a scientist, he's an experimentalist. And he does have his AI companion to help him remember things, she deliberately didn't remind him of the wedding because she's jealous.
yes but again critic has a back up plan remember how he got backlash over Mako next thing you no he does like 5 rant videos cause his fan base gave him threats
Oh of course he does! I'm not saying he doesn't, just some people judge to easily and get mad, u know how RU-vid commenters are at times... They get a bit rowdy. XD but seriously I hope no one takes the reviews seriously, critic said himself he knows he's a good actor.
"Why's she marrying him???" Critic, let me explain something to you... HE HAS A FUCKING FLYING CAR. You can get a decent looking bimbo with a Volvo without couple of wheels, and when you have a FUCKING FLYING CAR? I guess the bigger question is how come he stayed with her.
