Nostalgia Critic Real Thoughts on Batman & Robin

On Doug and Rob's point that Arnold is the only actor that stands out in an otherwise talented cast, I would even argue that with the right script Arnold could have been a good Freeze. I mean, let's be real, we all know Arnold can play an emotionless killer very effectively.

It's funny though from the commentaries I've heard from Arnold on films he's down I think he just really enjoys being the characters he plays. He always reacts with childlike wonder whenever his character does something cool

The saddest thing is is that the last Batman Movie to be seen by Bob Kane, the creator of the Batman character!

In this film it was almost like George Clooney didn't play either Bruce Wayne or Batman. He just played himself in a Batman suit.

You know, I thought Jim Carrey was great. The scene where Batman rejects his idea and Nygma says "You were supposed to understand", you can see something snap in his face.

I don't mind if Joel Schumacher apologizes. God knows Michael Bay isn't going to apologize for jack.

One of the stupidest things about the film is that it tried to combine both versions of Mr Freeze into 1 character and failed miserably. There's no way you can combine the tragic Freeze from Batman the Animated Series who's willing to do anything to save his wife with the comedic pun spewing Freeze from the Adam West show who only cares about stealing diamonds to power his freeze suit.

The stuff with Alfred in this movie was nice. How it showed the close relationship between Bruce and Alfred and how we all felt sad over him being sick.

would love to see you two talk about the transformer series. Especially since Rob is (or was) boycotting michael bay.

The thing about Batman and Robin, Schumacher says this in an interview, is that he was told to make a movie that was more "toy-rific". So the entire movie is basically just a big commercial designed to move action figures--that's it. That's why the 3 heroes apparently either go back to the Batcave and change outfits or just had a spare costumes along between capturing Poison Ivy and confronting Mr. Freeze and why Robin has his "Redbird" bike and they have separate vehicles for driving on ice. The more shit they can throw in this movie, the more they can make toys out of. You can tell, they really just didn't spend enough time going over the script and going over the story because the studio just wanted to ram this big toy commercial down people's throats as quickly as possible.

Everyone I know refers to this movie as "Bat-Nipples" to the point I sometimes forget the actual title.

I remember so distinctly when B&R came out and I was one of the very few who really enjoyed it. It was a Batman movie, it was supposed to be fun and more headed towards families and especially children. I was really surprised at the negativity it received at the time because I was so hyped to have live action Batman movies and just made me wonder how the series would have gone had the studio didn't pressure Joel into making B&R a merchandising machine as well as a very Adam West style film. As I was very young at the time, I was so excited to see all the merchandising and promotion for the film, just 2 years after Forever. I look back to when B&R came out and I remember so many theories at the time of where the 5th film was going to go. I believe Schumacher was toying with the idea of a Scarecrow driven story with hallucination cameos of past villains, especially a possible cameo from Jack Nicholson, tying in the last 4 films into the 5th. This was just before the internet took off where people could post their views but I was so disappointed that Warner Bros had scrapped the 5th film because these films were such a big part of my childhood. It felt like a 5th should have been made as an apology for B&R. Even when Batman Begins came out, it felt so underwhelming for me without an iconic Elfman style score you could remember and also the Tumbler, not a patch on the Batmobile of Burton's era. I still watch the Schumacher/Burton movies far more than any Batman movie that came after them. I just feel B&R was misunderstood and just wasn't what audiences expected after Forever. Schumacher even said that after Forever he wanted to make an origin Batman: Year One as it was his favourite comic of the character but Warner Bros wanted a lighter brighter sequel. Real shame how the series went.

9:56 That "mad scientist" character that they were talking about was John Glover, whom I believe has a Tony award and he would go on to play Lionel Luthor on Smallville. He and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) carried that show in the early seasons while Tom Welling was slowly learning to act and the Lana Lang character was basically eye candy.

Rob Walker pointed out THE best argument: WHO's to blame? Because Schumacher seems to apologize for the guys over him, those who did write the checks. He does seem to take the hits for everyone else, as if he was the only one deciding. My guess is he was TOLD to do the movie this way (with the merchandise in mind), and even though he did kill Batman for a few years, I don't think he's so much to blame. If anything, Warner's execs are the ones who should answer to us and apologize.

George Clooney has said if you paid to see B&R in the cinema he will personally refund your ticket.

This reminded me of when Kevin Smith talked about his experience writing Superman: Reborn. The producer wanted Kevin to make characters that can be as a toy and was further away from the original source material. WB was more concerned about merchandising. They did the same thing with B and R. I was 5 when this film came out and I got a lot of toys due to the movie.

I think the problem with genre's like comic book movies is that once they decline in popularity it becomes a downwards spiral. Because they are less successful people aren't investing in them so that makes them worse which makes them even less attractive for the studious to invest in. One thing it proves though is that a genre is never truly dead. Even if a movie kills it, once the next generation has come that doesn't know about it, it will be revived. Superheroes will always stay with us, they are as old as civilization itself, every single tribe or civilization had stories about supernatural heroes doing good.

I love that at Kami-Con a couple weeks ago, at Doug's panel, I said "bat credit card". While Takahata101 held me down, Doug appeared to be beating me up. Then he went back on stage and Taka gave me a nuggie. It was awesome.

On one hand, I feel that casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze killed any of the dignity that was added to the character with the animated series and effectively killed the character for a dignified film portrayal (though Gotham the show could potentially resurrect the character's dignity). On the other hand, Arnold is just a ball to watch every frame he's on screen cause it's just "what the fuck is this?" written all over it.

Adam West Batman worked because it was genuinely funny.

Even before showing Batman on the cover of Time magazine, we see that at some point Batman was sat in a court room in full costume waiting to take the stand at the trial in which Harvey became Two-Face. Now that's when the series really started getting stupid!

I remember reading somewhere that George Clooney actually was bragging about how he helped to destroy Batman for some years before de Nolan films.

I wished they would talk more about Batman Forever, just because I think it's a far more interesting topic than its sequel. I really like Forever and Jim Carrey was perfect as The Riddler. I don't get why everything has to be dark and mean and stuff. It's a comic book movie, just let's have fun with it. Even Batman Returns does a good job at it, because it's silly but a lot of fun to see the characters play off each other.

Batman and Robin was my first cinematic experience ever..... I still have the scars

Batman & Robin is entertaining and watchable in a cheesy Adam West Batman kind of way. It is definitely not the worst movie ever made.

While I will never in good conscience say that Batman & Robin is a good movie (because it's clearly not), I can say without any guilt whatsoever that Frank Miller did far more damage to Batman's mythos and the DC Universe in general than Batman & Robin ever did. Yes, Frank Miller gave us The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One - two of the greatest comics ever written. But sadly, just like George Lucas, for some unexplained reason he made it his goal in life to destroy his own legacy with The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman and Robin (aka The Adventures of Crazy Steve and Dick Grayson Age 12). The Dark Knight Strikes Again is a dumb and unnecessary sequel that's far more interested in dishing out social satire than actually telling a compelling story, but ASBAR is the bigger offender because it portrays Batman as a psychotic, unreasonable, sadistic and just plain unlikable asshole. And this was given to us by the same man who once said, and I quote, that "Batman is as good and pure a superhero as you can find". The same man who praised Batman Begins for being true to the character and for having heart and substance. Compared to ASBAR, Batman & Robin is harmless.

I think this movie is the most Arnold's seen smiling and enjoying himself.

This is the movie that reminds me the most of the Adam West Batman (Well, besides the movie they made back then with the submarine). Arnold really seems to have a good sense of humor and enjoys being in silly movies just as much if not more than action movies.

I hate when Shumacher and other people say "oh Batman and Robin, it's suppose to be goofy, it's a satire of Batman, blah, blah, blah"... how and why the hell would be a satire?! Especially when it's a sequel to, what was originally, a really dark and captivating story...that's like making the dark knight and then the Adam west show as it's sequel, it's so out of place, it's a poor excuse

I wish that they had been more definitive with their answers during the end, because as they wrapped up,i was left confused. Do they like it or not?

I'll say this much about the Burton-Schumacher "Batman" films: I always felt that the order in which the villains were used felt the most natural compared to other "Batman" movie series. 1: Joker 2: Penguin, Catwoman 3: Riddler, Two-Face 4: Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane I can't say I'm a fan of more than one villain in each sequel. Still, Riddler and/or Two-Face always felt like the right choice(s) for Movie 3, not 1 or 2.

Actually, the Adam West version of Batman was shockingly clever at times.

Let's be honest: you can say that Batman And Robin is the dark stain in Arnold's acting career because of his ice puns but he stole the show in that movie.

I love both the Tim Burtons Batman movie. Batman Forever not great but it's a guilty pleasure. Batman and Robin is shit. There is one thing all these movies have in common. The villains, Jack Nicholson's Joker, Danny Devito's Penguin, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-face, Jim Carrey's Riddler and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr.Freeze all just makes me laugh. When they all go over the time it's just so funny to watch. That's what I love with all four of these Batman movies.

Real thoughts on Signs. I think that is one that needs the most relaxed explaining because of how much people love it. Keep it up because these are awesome.

I LOVE this movie, LOVE it. I laughed all the way through it, they was not one scene I didn't enjoy.

Batman and Batman Returns will always be my absolute two favorite Batman films of all time (not counting any of the animated stuff).

I agree with both Doug and Rob in that VISUALLY, "Batman and Robin" looks cool. Plus, I truly DO like Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, and Chris O' Donnell was good as Robin again. But...yeah, "Batman and Robin" IS mostly a train wreck of a movie. But I guess it's sort of a guilty pleasure of mine.

May I say.........R.I.P Joel Schumacher. My favorite movie from him is "Falling Down".

I had 7 or 8 years when Batman & Robin came out. I actually loved the film back then, and I even took it seriously :P

Actually Rob wasn't too far off about the toys making the film. Akiva Goldsman literally revealed that WB had toy companies in focus group meetings and consistently shot down ideas he and Schumacher had in favor of toy company ideas. Even in editing Goldsman said Schumacher tried to make a slightly darker cut (Not to the extent of Batman Forever's early cuts mind you), but WB shot it down and re-edited it again. WB, interfering with DC film directors since 1995. I'd say 1978 but actually WB was on Donner's side against the Salkinds going from what we know.

4:10 My thoughts on _Equestria Girls_.

it's a silly movie, and the only actor who is capable of not taking itself too seriously is Arnold (I am quite sure he knows he is a bad actor, but that is what makes him great in goofy roles). Clooney and the rest of the cast are just too full of themself to make this work (it's funny to see a bad actor in a bad movie making fun of both. but it's really sad to see a bad actor in a bad movie trying to take it seriously). Arnold is kinda like Bruce Campbell, it may not be the ideal choice for a good movie, but he can make a bad movie become great.

Personally I'm ok with the Bat-credit card because it feels like Batman would legit need his own means of finance, his own bank system separate from the public one but compatible, or something like that. Kinda like Damage Control in the Marvel universe, the team that comes and fixes the city after each superhero battle (in the MCU they're a big part of Spider-Man Homecoming). That started as a literal joke, showing how could buildings be toppled over in one comic and then the city be as good as new in the next one, so they made a humor comic about it, but it's also canon because it actually makes sense in the universe.

I don't know why people say Batman Returns didn't make money, it was the third highest grossing film of 1992, behind Aladdin and Home Alone 2.

The Batman Beyond version of Mr. Freeze had a far better ice pun than any of Schwarzenegger's: "(referring to his suit) I had this kept in cold storage."

If you look at that lamp on the left of the screen and squint, you can see Tom Cruise wearing sunglasses. I AM DEAD SERIOUS HERE.

I was incredibly disappointed about the Bane character in this movie. One of the most dangerous enemies to Batman reduced to a slightly enhanced thug.

I love the movie "Batman and Robin". I think the reason I do is that Batman Forever/Batman and Robin was my first time meeting this hero called "Batman" so for me THIS will always be the cannon version. And it was funny! I was going through a bad patch in my life and this movie was one of the few times I belly-laughed for over an hour. Oh... and so gorgeous. Sheer visual enjoyment. It has pretty much ruined the Dark Knight/Comic book version of Batman for me tho. Then again... I doubt I would ever have been a Batman fan anyway. Not my type of story.

I liked Mr. Freeze, Batgirl, and seeing Chris O'Donnell as Robin again. The subplot about Alfred's illness also had some weight...but everything else just flat-out sucked. Chris even said he felt like it was a long-form commercial, whereas "Batman Forever" had a real point.

Also if U take note, ever since Spiderman 2002, came out every summer afterwards there has been a least one comic, most Marvel Comic movie coming out.

I really prefer First Viewing and Real Thoughts On to the regular Nostalgia Critic reviews.

I just realized that you guys should do a real thoughts video The Neverending Story. I realize that it's probably too beloved to skewer it with an NC, but watch it again and see if it still holds up. In my opinion it does, but there is a lot of dialogue that should have been left unsaid and simply implied.

At 12:45-46 they say "um" at the exact same time and I thought more people should know.

i really wouldn't blame Joel Schumacher for Batman & Robin. he has made some good movies (Falling Down, the Lost Boys, Tigerland) and whatever he did as director is the least of this movies problems.
