KnightsaysNi The real reason why they used background male singers in his musical moment is to sugarcoat his horrible singing. It sounds just like how Doug and Rob described it: a dying dog.
@20:49 The actress, Amanda Seyfried, actually acts really well in other movies, and has redeemed herself musically in Les Miserables, where she played Cosette, and her singing in that was downright beautiful.
The more I think about their comments on Sophie being crazy, the more I believe that they're right. At the beginning, when she's reading about her mom's sexcapades through her personal diary, she and her friends get all giddy over it, and proceed to sing "Honey, Honey" (one of ABBA's songs that's clearly about sex). Like, yeah... that is not a normal reaction.
Wow before one of my favorite superhero movie that shitty movie was the most financially successful movie by a female director that is fucking sad thank God for WONDER WOMAN
The "it's a chick flick!" defense" reminds me of when people will defend lazy, low-quality, and/or just plain crappy kids' movies and shows by saying "it's for kids!" It's condescending as hell, not to mention it's not even a good defense.
+ElectricMayhem87 Yeah totally. There's no excuse for shitty entertainment. Every idea and genre deserves at least effort put into it. You can't just check things off a list that you know people want or expect to see.
+ElectricMayhem87 It's the equivalent of a parent saying "Because I said so" when the kid asks why they can't do something. It's not a good reason, it's just a reason.
+theAngryscotman I always take it as they use because I said so because nothing is wrong with doing it they just don't want you to. Like if you ask why can't I have a cookie and the answer being because I said so. There is nothing wrong with eating said cookie they just don't want you all sugared up and running around.
I'm really surprised to see that Garbage Pail Kids still remains as #1 on the top hated list, but I definitely love the idea of Rob doing a top 11 list too!
Hones thoughts on Scooby Doo. For me, the live action Scooby Doo movies are self aware. They are so bad there hilariously stupid, and I prefer the likes of the animated Scooby Doo then I ever could live action. The characters and plot are pretty stupid, the CGI terrible, chemistry between characters is absolute shot etc you get the point. One thing I must say is the design of the theme park is actually quite amazing, and I want it to exist, but that's all I have good to really say about.
OMG I love Princess Bride! It's my go-to example for romantic comedies being genuinely romantic and actually having comedy. I have pretty much badgered pretty much all of my close guy friends into watching it and they all love it, too. It's pretty much an ultimate good. After you watch it, it's also almost obnoxiously quotable and when you do quote it, it always gets facepalmy grins.
MrX626 That would be because it's one of the most kickass things ever committed to film and you have good taste. I love how every time the 6 fingered man got annoyed, Inigo just got louder and more insistent haha
As a movie, I don't like it at all (I don't hate it for that matter, it was too forgetable for me), however, I remember I once went to a summer week, where there were these awesome activities, really awesome, and openminded people (a little hippie like, I have to admit), but really grounded people, and I had a fun time. They had a few movie nights, and they decided to play Mama Mia. They (mostly women) enjoyed seeing it together and enjoying how bad it was, and at moments there was music, they just ignored the whole movie and started dancing and singing themselves and because the singing and dancing in the movie wasn't good, they didn't felt ashamed to just dance and sing the way they could. It allowed them to let go and sing and dance as good or bad as they could, and just enjoy themselves. I still don't like the movie, but I liked how it gave these women the time and joy of just being goofy together (and I honestly think they were the demographic this movie was directed to).
I'd really, really like to hear the honest opinion on 'Felix the Cat.' Don't get me wrong, it was sloppily made, but I'm quite curious what the real opinion on that one is because aside from being a bit stupid Felix didn't look that bad to me..
He put it in his Top 10 worst movies he reviewed (it got #5). To sum up why he hated it: - The story seemed to have no direction (things seems to happen at pure random) - The voices being really badly dubbed (with awful sound mixing) making the whole thing sound obnoxious as hell. - The animation was way too animated and constantly moving way too fast (he even stated that Hotel Transylvania did the same thing, but at least it new when to stop). That's pretty much all. Because it was The Magic Voyage with the obnoxious factor cranked up to eleven.
mescatraz34 Yeah. It really felt more like a general raging against surreal humor. 'It makes no sense! It makes no sense!' Over and over again. Don't get me wrong, it was quite fun, but I couldn't quite help notice the 'theme' of quite a few of the jokes.
I'm a chick, and I can't stand this movie. It is utterly terrible, the only good part was how pretty Greece looked. Admittedly I'm an outlier, I hate chick flicks in general, even the "good" ones--- because I hate romantic comedy to the bone. However, Mamma Mia is truly bottom of the barrel, even for a chick flick.
I hate that the term "chick flick" even exists. It demeans women (even those who don't like chick flicks) and tries to pack all women into one lame category. And what about guys that like chick flicks? Ugh.
starseer73 Yep, you pretty much summed up my opinion on the matter - I couldn't agree more. :| The film industry in general tends to be demeaning to women - and while there is occasionally a film that portrays females in a more positive light, they're so few and far in between. I guess you could argue it's because there's more men in charge of these films; but personally, I find that just as valid as "it's a kid's show", because if you're good at something, you should try to appeal to any demographic (but not all at once), regardless of if you're part of that demographic. And, in case you're wondering, I'm a man; and yes, I do write about female characters; and no, I don't include any of that "vagina pandering" bullshit that demeans women - I just want girls to have good role models; and to do so, I try to make my female characters as relatable as possible. They have their strengths and weaknesses, and while most of them are not misandrists by any means, their entire lives don't revolve around boys or men. I know it might sound odd that a man actually cares about the portrayal of women in the media, but the fact of the matter is that guys like me are more common than we may seem. Doug Walker is one (I presume), and so is TheMysteriousMrEnter - but due to societal expectations, the macho guys who treat women like dirt are celebrated more. It's sad, I know, but it's true - but the more we try to break these stereotypes, the further our society will progress into being more friendly towards everyone. However, it is a slow process, so it could take centuries (if not decades) to reach that point. But, you know, if you don't want to be part of the problem, you could at least be part of the solution. Well, that's pretty much all I have to say. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)
TGWTGCensored Of course I know that there are guys who exist that don't demean women and do actually care about women's issues (though really I think there should be more -- then again, there should be more _women_ who care about women's issues too.) Thank you for trying to change our dumb society :D
Emra Thank you for that. I recently read a disgusting article from a feminist about how good this movie was. She said it "empowers women" and celebrates being feminine. I wanted to wretch, and blow my brains out. It's nowhere near that good! At best it's mildly entertaining, if you like the stars involved, but certainly it's not their singing. Aside from that, the choreography was some of the worst I've ever seen. It's like an elementary school play! Did anyone not notice how silly they look?! It's not even funny. Especially with the number with the guys on the dock. Fucking lame! The most awful thing about his movie is the nearly non-existent plot, of finding out which one of 3 guys my mom slept with, and invite them to my wedding, and when they arrive, I'll magically know who he his just by looking at him. Never mind the fact that you violated your moms privacy, and that your mysterious father hasn't been in your life because your mom never told him he might have a daughter.
Oh man... this was one of the few movies that the Critic has reviewed that offended me (the other would be EIGHT CRAZT NIGHTS)! I've never seen either of those movies, but seeing their content in those reviews was enough to offend me (though I love the reviews themselves)! I think this one got under my skin as my little sister had wanted to watch this movie when she was younger as she loved the soundtrack. Watching this review, the movie came across as sexist and demoralizing towards women, portraying them as idiots who are only obsessed with dating hot guys. It was especially painful when they stated that their house was nothing special, as I literally shouted, "Nothing special?! This is like a palace! You live on a beautiful double island off the coast of Greece, and you think it's nothing special?! I'd want to live on that island! MORONS!!!" I'm not even kidding about that! Seems that I was not the only person offended by this movie as Rob Walker considers it his second most hated reviewed film.
Naruto85RasenShuriken Also, I'd want to see honest thoughts on INDEPENDENCE DAY (as I actually love that movie as it's one of my Top 5 favorite movies, and it's probably the only NC review I don't like), FOODFIGHT! (I'm curious if Doug really hated it as much as he let on in the review or if he finds it "so bad it's good" like THE ROOM), INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (I feel that movie gets a little too much hate, and I can't stand him insulting Short Round (can't tolerate insulting children), and I'm curious if he really does dislike it or not), SON OF THE MASK (was it really as scary as the Critic made it out to be?), and THE CHRISTMAS TREE (does he really consider it to be the worst christmas special ever or was he overexagerating?). Those are Honest Thoughts I'd love to see!
+Naruto85RasenShuriken so kids are free from criticism when it comes to their bad acting, your logic is so stupid if you are referring to what i just said -_-
NightLotus What I meant was that we shouldn't degrade them with insults and curses for their bad acting! There's a difference between criticism and insults...
People forget that some of the best movies with Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Jane Fonda, etc. were chick flicks and yet, they are considered some of the best films of all time. Most everybody loves Audrey Hepburn and her most popular films (Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holiday) are chick flicks.
I liked musicals as a kid -- like Sound of Music, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, ect. But this movie I had no desire to see (my grandmother dragged me to it) and it was the first movie I could ever remember being bored out of my mind during. I've always had a hatred for it since. Your review pinpointed all the reasons why -- because I could never put my finger on it before hand.
I honestly want to hear their honest impressions of Pearl Harbor. Every time I watch that one speech from that video it feels like there was a lot of legitimate anger behind it and I'm curious on how they really feel about the movie that wasn't already spelled out in the review.
Here's a fun fact; in my high school Music course here in Sweden, we watched this movie over 2 lessons, and then the teacher (who loved this movie) told us to analyze how well songs could be implemented into other scenarios than what they were originally intended for, because according to her; "This movie perfectly takes already existing songs and implements them into a new musical".
I've watched this several times. Only this time, I finally noticed that Rob's expression while Doug sung (poorly yet, on purpose) ABBA snippets was that of a man deeply, SERIOUSLY entertaining the act of fratricide.
The surprising and sad thing is that Meryl Streep at one point actually considered being an opera singer at one point in her life. I don't really like her as an actress that much. But thinking of the fact that she was that delusional to think she was that good a singer is laughable. P.S. I hate this movie as much as you Rob!
When I first watched this movie with my mother (I was like 12 back then), she said one of the reasons she loved it was BECAUSE the singers don't sing well, they're just random people singing. Honestly, if I want to hear that I'll go do a karaoke with my friends after a few beers, I think we can achieve that just fine (and probably better). But coming from a musical, I expect better.
I remember the night my mom dragged my dad to this for date night. He came home and had almost the same reaction as you did, Rob. To this day, he still calls it the worst movie he's ever had to sit though.
How much of the reactions you gave in The Review Must Go On to The Odd Life of Timothy Green were genuine to the reactions you had on the plane you watched it on? What are ROB'S thoughts on Timothy Green?
Honest thoughts on Secret of NIMH 2! I'd definitely like to hear a more detailed video on the differences between the original masterpiece and the Eric Idle-fuelled Dr. Insano sequel.
I remember growing up and I adored Abba as a kid. And then this movie came out and my family got it for me because of the Abba songs, and I tried watching it. And I just recall being bored out of my mind. Watching this review showed me exactly why I didn't like it, even when I was a kid XD
I guess you guys should review 2014 "The other woman", ( with Camaron Dias) a movie that disappointed me so much. I laughed a lot at the trailer, but I didn't a once in the actual movie. I was really pissed off, I felt like I was betrayed by the filmmakers.
My best friend had different nreactions to seeing the preview the the 2nd movie. I shook my head and said no over and over again while he started singing abba. The drinking cocktails and laughing while talking over is on point. But I wouldn't voluntarily watch this again
I don't have a specific request, instead I ask if next time you could talk about whichever movie that you liked the _most_ while still having the Nostalgia Critic give it a "bad" review. Not only because it would make for interesting discussion, but to also explain to viewers how and why the Critics views are often played up for comedy. A lot of people seem to not realise that the Critic is a fictional character and take what he says as Doug and Rob's honest to God opinion. So not only would it be interesting discussion, but also a peak into the thought process behind an episode.
I wonder if the Walker brothers ever took martial arts and sparred together. That's DEFINiTELY something real brothers should be encouraged to do, in their youth.
I would like to see you do Eight Crazy Nights, mainly because you've mentioned that the director had a good sense of humor about it and you said you talked to him. I would kind of like to hear how that went.
You guys don´t get the movie at all. It´s an unofficial Nymph()maniac, James Bond and Kingsman Crossover with Streep and her daughter playing the Villains. They lure the men on theire island. An island with airborne LSD and pheromones. After five minutes of watching I decided the plot was about something like that. I had a blast. Also Streep financed her island with the money she made as Agnetha from ABBA. That´s why she figured out how to force everyone to sing ABBA songs using state of the art radio wave mind control (The ghetto blaster). In the final moments of the film the floor over her hidden underground laboratory cracks open and everyone is exposed to a mixture of LSD and weaponised Viagra in liquid form. This Film is awesome. It´s like Commando but twisted.
those haters of age of ultron, the force awakes, even frozen if we talking about chick flicks (even thought i don't like it) have literally no idea of what a horrible movie is... and this film is proof of that.... AND THIS ISN'T EVEN MADE BY DISNEY
force Awakens was awesome, age of ultron has great moments but was a mess and had a plot. Disney FROZEN was insulting its simply one song after the next with no thought into it
Watching this, made me realize the dynamic Doug & Rob have for creating the Nostalgia Critic character. Most of the jokes actually come from Rob, but Doug is definitely the more silly & animated personality, so he’s able to perform all the jokes they write for the review. 😂
You have opened my eyes about this movie. I agree with everything yadada. It's just I had a very fond memory of seeing this movie. It was when I really started to get intto ABBA so my aunts took me to see this movie. We had so much fun singing along. I never focused on the story myself. I was just so happy that i got to sing. After the movie we walked outside to the city experiencing a power outage. It was just funny because we were inside having so much fun and outside the world was ending lol. I also saw the stage play and it was boring but they all could sing.
hey. you don't remember me but let's just say this was the best birthday gift ever. Yeh, I know that sounds a little douchy. I mean it seems to me that this movie really did a number on you too XD. But if it makes you feel better, knowing that even the musical is STILL running on Broadway's marque, stealing the spotlight away from lesser known, better musicals is a little less than comforting for me. i guess what im trying to say is cheers to you guys for an awesome review!
I would like to know what you really think about the Grinch with Jim Carrey. Like you said in the Batman and Robin video, I am huge Jim Carrey Fan and like the Christmas Tree Christmas is effort and I can tell that the Grinch was just *OOZING* effort! I hope you can go over it sometime soon-esque. Thanks guys.
Haha, indeed. When I watched his earlier reviews, Rob would often imitate voices, like Christopher Walken, I think, but I always thought it was Doug doing the impressions. There were some other impressions, too. It baffled me when I found out that it wasn't Doug because I heard so much of his voice in them.
9:20-10:00 talking about side character getting a time to sing in a movie, remind me from the movie Grease, the pointless song Beauty School Dropout. (and i like Grease)
Jingle All the Way Judge Dredd Congo Captain America (1990) (Think it could be rather interesting now that the superhero genre has exploded) Last Action Hero North Rocky IV Waterworld Hook Independence Day Secret of NIMH 2 Jurassic Park Trilogy Cop and ½ James and the Giant Peach Moulin Rouge How the Grinch Stole Christmas Alien: Resurrection Signs Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom The Odd Life of Timothy Green (Think there's a lot to talk about this one considering it's the one that brought the Critic back) A.I: Artificial Intelligence The Last Airbender Alice in Wonderland (2010) Foodfight! After Earth Small Soldiers A Christmas Story 2
Dear doug You dont know how much of a fan I am. I love nc and even the bad reviews I get a laugh out of. As a devoted fan I have ten requests for this new portion of the show : Batman and robin It Battlefield earth Bridge to terebithia Les miserables The shining TV series A troll in central park The lorax Wicker man Eight crazy nights Oh, and as a devoted fan, can I request a movie to destroy? Romeo+ juliet , I remember you saying something bad about it and I fucking loath it! I'd love to see you ( the best critic ever and my idol besides rorschach) rip it apart! P.s you're better than the Angry video game nerd! :-)
I think it'd be interesting to see you guys talk about "Be Kind Rewind". It's not really a terrible movie but it has A LOT of things that needs to be talked about with the plot, acting, casting, and especially the ending.
I'd like to see a Real Thoughts on Lost in Space. You said it was one of the worst movie you ever reviewed, but it didn't appeared in your Top 11 list, so I wish to know more.
My list of ideas for this show: Batman and Robin The Room (If you feel there's anything left to be said) The Last Airbender (again, if there's anything left to be said) A.I. Godzilla (1998) some Old vs News (Batman, LOTR, Wonka, King Kong, Spider-Man)
Okay, got to about 6 minutes, and I'm actually trying to talk to the guys on the screen. The thing about Mama Mia the stage show, it was DESIGNED, the 'story' such as it is, was designed specifically around showcasing the Abba songs. NOTHING else. The stage show is just as vapid... but you DON"T CARE! Because you LOVE these songs, and you love how these people are SINGING these songs! And the people who are in these shows, have AUDITIONED! And PRACTICED! And I'm sorry, but people who do broadway shows, either on broadway, or on tour, ARE good! They bust their asses BEING good! Because if they are NOT good, there's at least 10 other people who can take their place in a fucking HEARTbeat. And the problem with the movie is, translating a vapid stage show INTO a movie... just... doesn't... work. But to get people to SEE it, they have to put some high end brand names. And Pierce Brosnen... He's good. He's fucking GOOD. I mean he was Remmington Steele, and James FUCKING Bond. But at no point during those shows or those movies did they ask him to SING. And I fucking LOVE watching him act. And the scenes he has in this movie, like any other he's in, he chews it up, bends it over, and makes it his bitch. But then they have him sing.. and it just... I can see why Rob hates it. It's a movie with 1000 cuts.
