If you look at this chart, it represents the amount of money we could make grows proportionately to the distance we travel away from the source material. Unfortunately, this time, the chart was wrong. Next up is Assassin's Creed the Movie, but without the Animus. Or the Assassin's. Or the Templars. With extra Kanye and product placement in it.

How sad...one of the writers of the original source material turned down by the director of "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never." I could not think of a scenario more ludicrous in the film industry than this.

However, she did make a brief cameo in the movie (she was the woman asking Rio what the band was called). I guess that was a nod to the fans? O.o

Remo Williams No - the voice actress was the one who introduced them on stage. The one asking about the group's name was the original creator/writer of the 80s cartoon.

That was even a bigger insult to her. "Hey, you can't have any control over the intellectual property that you created, but we'll give you a cameo in the movie. That's fair, right? Right?" No, it isn't.
@aussieman3021

The fact that the makers of the movie asked fans of the original Jem cartoon to send videos of why they love the cartoon and editing them to make it look like they're praising that movie which has 0% to do with what they love has to be one of the worst, most insulting manipulation techniques ever employed in a motion picture.
@GirtheAlienGoldfish
@GirtheAlienGoldfish 8 лет назад
In the cartoon, Jerrica disguised herself as Jem to keep her identities separate. She ran a foster home and a record label and became Jem to put on concerts. The cartoon Jem was likable because she was a responsible, humble, tough businesswoman who went out of her way to help others. The show had a lot of depth. Fuck, one of the Starlight kids even had a drug addiction because her classmate gave her pills. Roxy couldn't read and Pizzazz's mother abandoned her as a child, which is why she's such a bitch. The movie just took everything the show had to offer and was like, "Nah. Fuck the fans. We're going Cheetah Girls on this script!" It was insulting.
@eswan8900

Not even Cheetah girls. At least that appealed to little girls. This was like...generic band movie with hardly anything new.

I have to agree with Rob on this one...I think movies can only be funny-bad when the people behind it actually care or are trying. That's why something like The Room or Birdemic is funny, because their directors are delusional and think they are actually "filmmakers". Something like The Amazing Bulk or, in this case, Jem- aren't funny because they are soulless and you can tell nobody gave a shit. RLM actually explains it much better than I can on one of their episodes of Best of the Worst. :D
@trenthawkins
@trenthawkins 8 лет назад
Red Letter Media; the people who did the Plinket starwars prequel reviews (among other things). Best of the worst is a pretty good youtube series of theirs.
@andrewheaney4874
@andrewheaney4874 8 лет назад
Don't forget Cool Cat Saves the Kids and Plan 9 from Outer Space as "funny-bad" movies. I haven't seen the Bulk (and I never, NEVER intend to), but Jem and Cat in the Hat (which I think is worse than Jem when it comes to shitting on the source material, though that may be because I care far more about Dr. Seuss than the Jem cartoon) are just awful. Then there's a category of films that fit the requirements of "funny-bad", ie the directors trying and failing, but are so offensive that they are not, and thus I consider them to be below the bottom of the barrel. My prime examples are Garbage Pail Kids, Foodfight, Smosh the Movie, Attack of the Jurassic Shark, and Baby Geniuses (the second one actually does have a few funny bad moments). All of these had the potential to be so bad they're good, but just aren't.
@FuugaNatsu
@FuugaNatsu 7 лет назад
+Leeroy TheArtist Actually, James Ngyuen DID try to make the film seriously. It's just everyone else in the crew (including the cast this time) were in on the joke. This is made very clear by the tracks of commentary on the Birdemic 2 DVD. I am not even joking.

I'm a millennial, I didn't grow up with Jem, and I can still tell you this film was terrible. I don't think a cheaper made film has EVER been released in theaters! They used GOOGLE MAPS in some scenes! Not even some fan films on the internet are that cheap! Not to mention when they threw a bunch of unrelated interviews together and tried to convince us they were talking about Jem. Hollywood, stop ruining shows from people's childhoods to try and appeal to the new generation through dated pop culture references and jokes! MAKE ORIGINAL MATERIAL! I know this is unrelated, but no one wants a gender swap of Ghostbusters, just make a new film with an all female cast if you must! STOP RUINING CLASSICS AND MAKE YOUR OWN!
@DigiRangerScott

But if there were a movie with a team of female ghost hunters and it wasn't called Ghostbusters, people would accuse it of being a ripoff.

I'm actually a millennial who has seen every single episode of Jem and the Holograms multiple times over. I can easily say just watching the trailer made me want to vomit. After seeing the Nostalgia Critic review I thought that was enough for the movie for me to get a good idea that what it was about. I hate that movie with a passion and so does my mom, the woman who show me every single episode of Jem and the Holograms. the worst part I think was them demoting synergy. I thought she was the coolest supercomputer ever and the fact that they made her this stupid dancing robot was disgusting.

What they did with Synergy is nothing short of tragic. Synergy is supposed to be intelligent enough to be a mentor and friend, almost a mother figure. Infact she was designed to look like Jerrica's mom. I mean Synergy was the backbone or the gimmick to Jem's appeal. I mean with holography being used in live performances today (think of Hatsune Miku) they could have done SO much, made it SO much cooler - but they abandoned everything that made the show cool. It had the potential to be bad ass and they failed so hard. What made Jem so fun when I was a kid was that this ordinary down on her luck girl could transform her look entirely - like Sailor Moon, it was a transformation and she could show her true self but anonymously almost. I think the idea is that as herself, no one would give her a second glance but with technology she could transform entirely. The concept could totally be transformed in to something today's generation could relate to. What they did in this movie was disappointing to the point of being disgusting.

I actually did not grow up with Jem and the Holograms, it ended the year I was born, but I did watch the series a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. It was kind of a guilty pleasure but it was cute and fun and even though I had never seen it as a kid it had a nostalgic feel to it and I liked it. I can't bring myself to watch this movie, I read the synopsis and I was like "This isn't Jem and the Holograms, it is just some crappy teenage girl-power, chick-flick abomination. THEY CAN'T BE THE HOLOGRAMS WITHOUT THE FREAKING HOLOGRAM! The heck is this?!"I think Hannah Montana would be a better adaptation of Jem and the Holograms than the Jem and the Holograms movie. On a side note, apparently Rob and I have a similar definition for millennial and we are both wrong according to a google search. I guess millennials are anyone born from the early 1980's to about 2000. Well I definitely never included myself as a millennial and I was born in 1988. Yuck, I feel gross now.

A parody/homage like the Brady Bunch movie is exactly the way to go. Make a film that the fans can embrace with all the murder attempts, music videos and bad 80's fashions, Or better yet, adapt the IDW comic, which manages to take the concept (silliness and all) and runs with it.

There is a reason that Jerrica chose to keep her identity a secret. 1) privacy reasons (Jerrica has a good dozen foster kids to take care of. Stardom wouldn't give those girls a chance to grow up outside of the papparazzi). 2) Rio is an insanely jealous boyfriend; ready to throw down the moment another man so much as blinks at Jerrica/Jem. Think a guy like that would be okay with his girlfriend becoming a musical sensation? Hell, he can barely tolerate Jem's popularity - and she, technically, isn't even his girlfriend! 3) Synergy is a particularly powerful system. This is not something Jerrica wanted to see fall into the wrong hands. So, to keep Synergy hidden, Jerrica had to hide her alter ego from the world.
@tomwaterwitch

4) Creating the alternate identity or Jem and the Holograms they could create a rock band that Eric Raymond could not control compared if he knew it was Jerica.

I can't believe that movie was shit on so hard. I didn't like scooby doo the cartoon as a kid, and I watched the old original stuff. That show was just sooo fucking boring to me, and it was the same thing every episode. Although I did like when they had cameos like batman and robin. Anyways, the movie was more of a parody of the show and it kind of said a lot of things that I was thinking. That might be why I like it so much. But also, some of the plot is just unforgiving, stupid as hell even if you consider the movie to be a parody. I can see how the movie ruined a lot of people's childhoods though. There were always diehard fans of the show, and the movie showed them no respect. PS, I know I'm not Doug or his brother, but I still wanted to share my view on it.

But I didn't fully appreciate just how bad it was until I saw the "family humming" parts in the Nostalgia Critic review. What really gets me is that 80s retro stuff is kind of cool right now. Exactly! And even if it wasn't a huge hit, it would have at least satisfied the fanbase that grew up on it, and the hype would have made other people see it as well! Kind of like how the original Ninja Turtles movies weren't really made for a mass audience, just for the kids and fans that liked the cartoon, so they went crazy with them and did all the random shit they did in the show. THAT would have turned out much better than this pile of garbage we got.

Jem was more than Decent. It was Decent by comparison to 90s shows. And by 00s shows. and 2010s shows. Aside from the middle of the second season. Top 2-5 of the 80s. The storyline(except two bad episodes) were more consistent. It had more continuity immediately than most and it kept it unlike some other shows like G.I Joe and Turtles that sort of lost that. As well as the characters being full, not caricatures, so it wasn't toony. And not a pure humour show, which american shows tend to be. It combined things a bit more like manga. It wasn't a full romance but that was consistent element and not with guys of the weeks either. To be better than Jem, you need to get into reboot, Gargoyles, DCAU. And it started most consistently that some of those top shows too.

As a fan of Jem, having seens reviews, and these, this movie was dreadful and I didn't want to even see it in theaters. It has nothing good to say and is nothing like the cartoon. It says Jem and makes cracks from it, and references, but it is awful. They did make a better Jem movie, Hannah Montana. It was bad too, but not this bad. I grew up on Transformers, Voltron and GI Joe and stuff, but Disney afternoon came a bit later when II was in college. Actually the Care Bears was pretty corporate and obvious in episodes. Rainbow Brite was just bizarre. If they wanted to make a Jem movie, cast Lady Gaga as adult Jem, confident and silly weird (in a good way), and make it a throwback 80s piece. Have the computer be Madonna. Come on people. Ha.

What if instead of becoming an overnight sensation, her content was actually called out for being similar to that of another, more popular online talent who decided to publicly acknowledge the virtually unknown performer's existence? Resulting in a considerable viewer spike, a series of back-and-forth video responses, and maybe even the formation of an on-screen rivalry that continues to resonate with fans on both sides a literal decade afterwards? Or is not how fame on the Internet works?

I never watched the cartoon fully, mostly learning this via small snippets or talking with friends. I love, love, love, loooooove the cartoon, not because of childhood nostalgia (I was in my 20's when I first saw it), but because it is THE most unapologetically, absolutely and completely 80's thing that has ever existed. Everything from the designs to the songs to the message is deep fried in camp and served with a huge slice of 80' cheese. The biggest insult to me was that the makers of this movie used NONE of those elements. If I had any say in it, I would have made this a glorious love letter to the decade of dayglo, charity singles, gigantic hair and all things OUTRAGEOUS. What a waste.

I believe that fan property is sacred, no matter what it is and I've seen so many times when Hollywood just doesn't give a shit and destroys stuff with huge fan bases just to appeal to "the charts". It happens way too often. You'll see a popular property that you grew up with get a movie, only to discover that the movie company only paid for the name of the property to slap on some script they had laying around that was of similar subject matter that has nothing to do with the actual property.

what has me worried is they cast Liev Schrieber. now, most live action actors have issues with voice work already, coming off flat without their facial expressions, but Liev is even bad in live action, so... yeah... my hope is that he plays something that plays to what strengths he has, like a no nonsense, stick in the mud type villain, who would work as straight man to discord or whoever the primary comic relief will be. but, it's being made by the show writers, so it can't possibly be that bad.

Most of the people working on the movies are the people who work on the show. With Jayson Thiessen directing, Meghan McCarthy writing the script (along side Rita Hsiao who wrote Mulan) and acting as executive producer. Stephen Davis, Michael Vogel, Sarah Wall and Kirsten Newlands all having producer or executive producer creddits I can say that the movie is in really good hands. The worst that can happen is that the movie will feel like a 2 hour episode of the show.

Lankey Bastard read my comment again and comment afterwards. it seems understanding words in a certain order is a special trait you are missing

My original comment had nothing to do with Nationality so when you came out of left field with your pointless, off topic comment, it threw me for a curve ball. I didn't know you actually missed the point that much. I was just saying that if you were born between two dates you were a millennial, not who was part of what problem. And if you retained any information from the video, you'd know that Rob said it wasn't the millennials fault, and that he doesn't "blame" them. As you so stupidly pointed out. But I guess that's a special trait you are missing, huh? You got too caught up in trying to flex your e-dick and ended up sticking it in your mouth. Sorry that the fact I posted triggered you, you typical millennial. :)

Lankey Bastard man, you are sad. petty insults, typing half an essay as a RU-vid comment and you are STILL missing the point of what I was trying to say. here's a small tip, it had nothing to do with hating on the US. I have no reason, to hate on the US, most RU-vidrs I watch ARE from the US. again, please read the comment again, stop getting butthurt over me mentioning the US and try your hardest to understand what I was saying. Otherwise, it's pretty pointless for you to try to get a counterargument for something you seem to have totally missed the point for.

I have to agree with Rob on this one XD At the end though, when Jerrica and her sisters are about to perform and the crowd is cheering for them, someone shouts "WOOOO LOVE YOU" and it sounded like "WOOOO FUCK YOU"

Rob needs to stop excessively filibustering during these videos. And they also need to find another kind of bad film than one that feels like it was written by a studio.

Watch The Blockbuster Buster's review of it to see the perspective of a fan of the original series.

Don't you mean filmibustering?

I don't think your using filibuster in the right context. In a filibuster Doug would not have a chance to speak and present any legislation.

Maybe that wasn't the best word to use. I just feel like these videos come across as unbalanced sometimes.

I know what you meant. He constantly talks over Doug and never seems to shut up. You can tell he's the 'big brother' in the relationship.

I just wish they were doing "First Viewings" around the time when they did this review. Rob's reactions would have been amazing.

As I said before, at least this movie was better than the "OogieLoves" (2012)
