As a HUGE fan of the Rock Raider line, someone that beat the PC version of the game, and former employee of Lego, deep rock galactic is probably the best experience for people that enjoyed the mining/exploration aspect of the original RR game. Oddly enough, the creators of DRG are based in Denmark as well.

This game has a lot of fans and a lot of love. And it's STILL underappreciated!

I was legitimately playing Deep Rock Galactic today thinking "This reminds me of Lego Rock Raiders", and I'm glad you mentioned that. I also play Banished a lot. There really needs to be a proper RTS successor to it

Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about Lego Alpha Team. I know you only featured it for 2-3 seconds in the intro, but geeze, that memory was buried deeper than anything on Frozen Frenzy. Great vid! Thanks for summing up all the history that I normally wouldn't have heard about since the initial release of this brilliant game. It baffles me that Lego let the TM go to rust on this one, but I suppose it was, at the time, ultimately a niche.

Pc version of rock raiders was amazing. THere were bugs, but i just loved it and replay it from time to time. Swap legos for more mature visuals and you get hardcore sci-fi idirect control rts. Teleporting buildings, controlling heavy machinery. Thats just incredibly awesome. And intro music was dope as heck. First lego racers was just awesome as well. And these current games, i enjoyed lego sw at first, they were just the right amount of collecting and length of the levels. Now every game is the same overblown mess. Im not saying its worse, but its nowhere near as fun as those games were.

Im a huge fan of RR and im glad to tell others here as well : there is currently a complete remake of the original Game . Its amazing , it has the same feel but less issues , its called Manic Miners

Fun fact: there is a recognized LEGO User Group (LUG) based in New Jersey, USA, named GardenSLUG (for Garden State LEGO User Group), as New Jersey is known as the Garden State. In the logo for the LUG, a Slimy Slug from Rock Raiders appears on each side, as it was one of the few, if not the only, LEGO slug visual when the logo was designed. Source: I've been in this LUG since 2014 and have seen it since 2013. According to the LEGO Ambassador Network website, which keeps track of and communicates with all recognized partners of LEGO including events, organizations and creators, the group was "reestablished" in 2011. So as far as I know, the Slimy Slugs have always been part of their logo.

Really enjoyed the video, came across it after talking with some friends about the first games we remembered playing. Was really interesting to learn about the PS1 port. Just went to check your channel to watch the rest of the series, but was sad to find that this is the only one so far. I would love to see the other classics covered by you! (Legoland, Lego Racers, Lego Alpha Team, etc.)

I'm gonna be the guy who defends rock raiders on the PS1. Played this game like hell as a kid and had no Idea there was a PC version until recently. And the game was hard. The controls were flimsy and it was a nightmare to control vehicles precisely enough for what needed to be done. But I still beat it. And remember it fondly despite of its flaws. there was a lot of trial and error where you had to repeat the same level over and over till you had memorised where everything was and which Hero to pick for the mission. yet being able to pick your hero at the start of every mission keep it fresh - since you never knew what you were going into (and added to that trial and error replayabillity that i think were simply accepted as part of games back then )Besides - playing as the heroes made more sense since all the cutscenes were tailored about them. (why would you play a game where the cutscenes were not about the people you were playing as?) And the trials added to the feeling of exploring an uncharted planet. You were a stranger in a strange land. and you did not know if you picked the right gear (hero) for the mission going forward. you were a Rock raider. And every step forward into those dark unexplored caverns was another step that you helped your crew take towards progress. (every hero was teleported out upon defeat, so there was no real death in the game) and those steps you had taken was a few extra explored meters of cavern hall that your predecessor (the next playthrough of the level) would know going forward. Untill eventually, through grit and determination. You found those power crystals. You rescued those workers, and you found that way forward through the sunless, unexplored darkness of the planets core. It was what it meant to be a frontiersman. and I remember all of my sibling hunker around our one PS1 - cheering each other on as we each took a few extra steps further on that hard rocky floor, before falling and passing the controler over to the next, who would get a little further, untill finally, one of us got through to the end.

I never got to play Rock Raiders as a child, but I was not anticipating the comparison with AOE2, which I did actually grow up with. Thank you for that comparison as well as a great explanation of the game!

Hey so if still looking for a playable version there's a more dedicated version now, With modern extra bonus things besides the classic. Its called: ManicMiners Came across it a few weeks ago give it a try if you want to relive the old days in full and not crashing glory.

This was an excellent review and analysis of the rockerider's games. I grew up with the PC version from a bundle that I found As a kid at KB toys that included 2 lego adventurers sets. I can remember my brother constantly playing this game and eventually beating it, while I only got to play a couple of weapons because he was older than me. A few times we did try to rebuild some of the Models from the game as actual lego models, We even owned some of the lego sets. Up until a couple years ago I didn't own a Playstation. But when I did get mine I didn't get the lego rocker routers game NTSC version for playstation. It was so stark in contrast to the PC experience that I haven't fully beaten it. I've been said, I had no idea that there was a different PAL version. I do find it fascinating that there was a saxophone animation removed because the saxophone didn't exist in lego, And yet the animations of rock raiders eating tricorner cut sandwiches was kept in, Even though a piece that small didnt exist for a long time either. Luckily nowadays, both of them can be adapted to lego figures very easily. I can't wait for more episodes in this series, because I really like the potential here investigating other lego video games and their various ports. I've done that to some degree on my own but I haven't posted much about it online

I concur with DRG being a very close experience in some ways to RR. I've spent a lot of time playing it. Now, what I would give for buildings and vehicles. Rimworld has also captured a bit of it for me, though not as much as DRG perhaps. I spent many hours trying to get RR to work on my Windows 8, and later my Windows 10 PC. Turns out my GPU is completely incompatible with the game, being an AMD card. I appropriated my parents computer, and it works perfectly first time, without any messing around. Been enjoying Baz's mod, and have also been following Cave Raiders. I also shared the feeling of wondering what was in the later game levels. I spent quite a long time trying to get through Frozen Frenzy, as I started playing it when I was 3. A lot of fond memories. The AI are a massive pain though >_>

Oxygen Not Included comes very close to Rock Raiders in gameplay and feel. If theres a mod to disable the survival aspect of ONI, maybe except for the air supply stuff, you'd have a 2D-Rock-Raiders-ish game!

I remember Liking this game. I played the US version with by brother. Our main issues with the game where the password system, not being able to use the sticks, and that the transports were hard to control.

Lego Rock Raiders was my life back then. played both the pc and the ps1 version, even though the ps1 version was entirely different from the pc version I had a lot of fun playing it with a friend.

Great video. While it is somewhat different, I think Rimworld could also fit into the list of successors to Rock Raiders.

Manic Miners is a fanmade remake thats easy to download and install. Only problem is that it requires a decent pc, because if you have no GPU it runs at like 1 fps.

Fun fact, when my brother and I would play the PC game often, my mom would constantly hear the warning of "a landslide has occurred". However due to the compression of the audio, my mom thought every time that chief was saying, something about a flashlight instead of landslide. So she would ask us, "will somebody get him a flashlight?"

I remember so well as a kid when i played the playstation version i hoped the "pc version" was on the later levels because i kept looking at the back of the cover. Thanks for pointing out the false advertisement

I've only ever played telltale lego games, but recently i watched a playthrough of rock raiders, and I'm already assuming "A LANDSLIDE HAS OCCURRED" is a common thing to have engraved in your skull if you played the game

Lego Rock Raiders was one of my first games for the pc. I remember the day I got this game as a birthday present from my parents. The German version is a little bit different with the voice over but I still remember the ongoing sentence "Es gab einen Erdrutsch" that's a landslide has occurred. Maybe you can make a video of Lego Island 2 :) Also Greetings from Germany :)

For all of you who want a modern version of Lego Rock Raiders, then go have a look at Miner Mania... it's a freeware version of Rock Raiders using the Unreal Engine. ;) Runs like a dream, to be honest.

My first memory of the game is the AI. I was already perceptive of the dumbness. The minifigs just picking up and "storing" ore infinitely at the Tool Store... Ugh. And I still have a physical copy, which is protected with SafeDisc. Despite my best efforts (SafeDisc driver, Voodoo wrapper...), it won't run. And I had to stumble upon ManicMiners. And I downloaded. And the nostalgia hit hard.

I loved this game, but one of my greatest regrets is that I never got the actual rock raiders lego sets! At least I just found a way to play it again thanks to oldgamesdownload. No cutscenes or music other than the menu and ambience though

4:34 what are these vehicles? an Ice Planet cargo carrier and a compressed chrome crusher with treads? As for NTSC vs PAL I get where you're coming from, it just feels like the north american version removes a lot of difficulty (respawning pickups, less monsters, no levels with strict time limits, etc), and you can tell its levels were not made by the DDI team and just feel less interesting overall.

I've never heard of this game until this week, and I thought I have played at least 90% of all RTSes.

and yah the set up is a pain in the ass on new windows. and actually impossible on windows 10 unless you run like a simulated olderversion of windows withing win10. but for that exact reason i have kept hold of and kept in mint condition a a 20 year old Toshiba laptop that can play RR with ease :D it is its sole purpose. that and housing some old documents.
