10cc was so brilliant and creative and smart that most people just didn't get it. But that's another reason why we liked them.

This 10cc reggae classic about a white man's experiences while holidaying in Jamaica is based on real events that occurred in Barbados, where Eric Stewart of 10cc and Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues took a vacation in 1977. Hayward was left on a boat with two guys from Barbados and one from Jamaica. Stewart recalled in the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner & Spencer Leigh, "Justin and I were on a para-sailing raft in the middle of the ocean and I was strapped into this parachute gear. I was towed behind a speedboat at high speed. I took off and waved goodbye to Justin. He was then left on the raft with three black guys, one Jamaican and two from Barbados. The Jamaican guy said to Justin, 'I like your silver chain, man, I'll give you a dollar for it.' Justin replied, 'come on, it's worth a lot more than that and it's a present from my mother.' And this guy said, 'If this was Jamaica, I would cut your hand off for that.' I came back and asked Justin if he wanted to have a go. He said, 'No, let's get off this raft as quick as we can, I have had some problems.' When we got back to England, I relayed the story to Graham (Gouldman) and we wrote a song around it."

Wearing expensive jewelry to cities or countries known for theft is simply not wise. My aunt visited Naples once and her bracelet fell out from under her sleeve when she pointed at an item in a market. The shop owner pointed at it and said, “no, no!” My aunt quickly hid it back up under her sleeve. My aunt knew better. You see, she didn’t live in Naples at the time, but she had lived there for years a decade before that.

Also for clarification on the voices in "I'm Not in Love": They are all voices recorded by members of the band, but they were all recorded as tape loops which were then controlled via the mixing console in a manner similar to synths on a keyboard, which was very innovative for it's time pre-sampling.

10cc was such a creative and versatile band, all four guys were song writers, singers and played multiple instruments. Although this song came out after Godley and Creme had left, it is still a banger. Some more songs to check out: Good morning judge, Rubber bullets, The wall street shuffle, I'm Mandy fly me, The things we do for love, Feel the love. From Godley and Creme: An Englishman in New York, Cry.

"Sheet Music" is a criminally underrated album recorded by the original line up of 10cc. As with this song, the sound is totally different than the syrupy stuff the later line up put out. "Wall Street Shuffle" and "The Worst Band In The World" are two cuts that immediately come to mind

When Reggae broke big in the late '70s, a lot of white bands (esp. British) tried their hand at it, because it was such a new and profound experience. The Stones, Led Zepplin's D'yer Mak'er (which, when pronounced a certain way, sounds like Jamaica), The Clash, and, of course, much of the Police. As to where to go next for Reggae, any of Marley's big hits are great, but also check out Peter Tosh, esp. anything from his album Legalize It, one of the genre's great albums. Also, Bunny Wailer, Lee 'Scratch' Perry (weird, experimental, fun, hugely influential on modern DJs), Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff ... they should all get you started with come classic stuff.
@DustinLollar
@DustinLollar 11 месяцев назад
But not all were able to do it remember Zepplin had to hire a Reggae backing band for D'yer Mak'er after they couldn't get the timing down, hence their reluctance to play live.

This was a huge radio hit when I was very young and I loved it. In junior high I went out and bought ten CC's greatest hits. And surely someone in the comments has already talked about the origin of the band name, lol. Kind of like Steely Dan in a way. There is such a rich treasure trove of Bob Marley and the Wailers across many albums and their sound evolved with every single album of course. So many great things from all along the way and I bet you've heard a lot more of them than you think you have. Or at least parts of them. But as someone who owned all of their albums and even covered some of their songs in a reggae band I was in at one point in my late twenties, I think a really great starting point is his final album before he died, Uprising. The studio production on this is mindblowing even today, and everything on it is fire. But then again you can say that about most of his albums. My favorite somewhat older album is Kaya. Actually, I bet you would have a great time working your way through Uprising song by song like you did with some other bands. But if nothing else, check out, from Uprising, The Work Song.

Hi guys - great that you loved this song! Funny story about the name of the album it is on - "Bloody Tourists". The story is that 10cc were holidaying in Jamaica at the same time as one of the Beatles (Paul McCartney, I think). Anyway - they happened to pass each other while in cars and McCartney ( recognising them ) yelled out to them (mockingly) "bloody tourists!" That's where the album name comes from.

I'm pretty sure A&A have not reacted to "Haitian Divorce" by Steely Dan (unless I am just forgetting it from a Livestream). Regardless of the reggae beat, the lyrics to that one would make for a fun review!

If someone had only heard 2 Beatles songs, and then asked for recommendations for the next one to listen to, you'd get 50 different answers and they all would be good choices. Same with 10cc. They had numerous hits, but their other songs were just as good or better depending on your tastes. So many different suggestions have been made in the comments, and they are all great songs. I personally recommend the epic, "Feel the Benefit" which takes you on a journey that showcases their wide range of musical talents.

Saw 10cc live on New Year’s Day, 1975. They were able to reproduce their studio sound quality live. Outstanding.

Sitting in Limbo by Jimmy Cliff, featured on the 1972 reggae soundtrack for his movie 'The Harder They Come'.

It's amazing how songs can take you back. The first time I heard this song was in Fall 1978 as I was walking through the Murphree dorm area at UF. So, so much good music back then. Seems like I remember a radio DJ once commenting that the song was mostly based upon true happenings. I hope so! Thanks for - another - trip through the memory section of my brain.

If you want to hear them doing a real rocker, try Blackmail from the Original Soundtrack album. Great bottleneck and tells a great story. Their playing and production was always really good. They built and used their own studio.

10cc were such a really clever band. They had a lot of commercial success but dig deeper on most of their albums and you will find a real wealth of excellent songs. You should try 'Une unit a Paris/Old wild men/ Don't Hang Up And probably their wierdest song of all Clockwork Creep

“Take the Picture, Harry”. (IYKYK - it was a line from the radio ad for this album in 1975!)

Good follow up for this is The Things We Do For Love. It's a perfectly structured song with brilliant lyrics.

Was really into 10cc while in high school. They were key to my musical taste development. By the time of Bloody Tourists, however, they were past their prime……saw them in concert in 1978 in Santa Monica. It was a good show. They rocked really hard…..10cc was neither underrated as many folks will tell you. Nor were overrated.. They are rated just right.

You should do Une Nuit a Paris. Rivals Bohemian Rhapsody IMHO. One of my favorites.
