That annoyed me too. I mean, there it is in the hubble image of proxima centauri... passing between hubble and that star, and the pixel colours are ozone on its sun-facing side putting it at 1AU from our star. Is the damb thing orbiting jupiter every four hundred years on a long drag spiral?

I came down here for this. Ceres was classed as a planet when it was first spotted, and then Vesta (I think that's the order). And then they started to find lots of other objects in the same general orbital region, and realized there's a whole "belt" of these objects between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and reclassified Ceres and Vesta from "planets" to "asteroids" as part of the "asteroid belt". Kind of like what happened with Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Except I don't remember hearing about anyone losing their minds about poor Ceres being "demoted" or whatever. Maybe because it wasn't named after a Disney dog. I don't get this whole emotional attachment to objects in space, "identifying with" them or feeling bad for them being reclassified based on new knowledge or whatever.

@@dwc1964 I kinda get it, because it's Yay Democracy!?! Sorta. Beats apathy, anyways. I think the size of Ceres and Vesta, from ordinary lensed telescopes had been underestimated. I think their true size is from more recent observations. For years, knowing the nine planets was taken as a sign of education, even more so the "self-educated" who learned from reading books, often very outdated books. Now people are beginning to realize that science requires updating one's knowledge constantly, and one can no longer stay on a desert island and learn about the world from an encyclopedia (as one of the Bond girls, who was supposed to be super smart)

Years ago I read that one of the reasons for choosing the name Pluto was the first two letters matched the initials of where it was discovered, the Percival Lowell observatory. And the last two letters were the first two in the last name of Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto.

I found a brown dwarf circling my toilet bowl. The coriolis effect gave it bands as the accretion disc swirled the black hole drain creating an active defecate nucleus beam from the bowl WHICH IS WHY YOU ALWAYS PUT THE SEAT AND LID DOWN WHEN YOU FLUSH

Hey Joe! I've been watching since your startup. Can I kindly suggest a video I think is much needed? Well, are you aware....Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, collard greens, kohlrabi, and several closely related vegetables originated from the same plant species, Brassica oleracea. Its wild form is known as wild mustard and still exists today. Humans began altering its genetics as early as 20k years ago

I'm not sure if you're slyly suggesting an intro to "selective breeding compared to genetic manipulation", or seriously devoting a whole episode to vegetables. I remember being pretty frustrated when learning Darwinian evolution, having to get caught up on animal domestication and breeding because Darwin took those metaphors to its limits when describing natural evolution. Tedious! Learning about GMOs is similar. To really understand it, you need to know both the latest tech of DNA manipulation, and the old-fashioned genetic manipulation through selective breeding. It's a lot to take in.

Twenty-five years ago, we found Bellerophon. I remember that day when the announcement was made. I remember thinking "Finally, there are worlds out there..." and now we have found thousands of these worlds, of all sizes and masses... and I still remember something my grandmother said to me once. "the universe does not care what you think or feel, it does not conform to your expectations or accept yur excuses... Accept this my young friend and you'll be better off for it." After having watched humanity's exploration of the universe these last three decades, I can only conclude that she was right all along.

I remember as a young kid, many, many years ago, looking at a depiction of the planets in a book, and noticing that Pluto was entirely unlike all the others. The others had similarly elliptical orbits that were not too far from circular, and they were all on the same plane - but Pluto's orbit was very much *not* on that same plane, and its orbit was so eccentric it crossed Neptune's, making it the 8th "planet" for much of the time. *Pluto, as a planet, never seemed right to me.* So I'm glad they found all those other objects out there that do what Pluto does and reassigned Pluto to its proper identity. As a planet it was the runt oddball; now, it's the King of the Kuiper Belt. Good for Pluto!

He may have been referring to way brown dwarf stars form. It's thought they form via gravitational collapse of a dust cloud, the same way stars form. Gas giant planets on the other hand, form the way planets typically do, via accretion of material from the planetary disc swirling around newly formed stars.

The moment of self-deprecation from ca. 2'40" - Yes, you did nail it, and your humorous moments are a big part of what keeps me watching. Personally, I never got too fussed about Pluto's demotion to King of the Dwarves. Existence never has given a toss about taxonomy so why should we, especially about things not mission critical to immediate survival, like, for instance, classifying snakes correctly is significant in its immediacy; venomous snakes which bite any 'prey' that moves, bad; certain other snakes which actually target species we consider to be vermin, good, hence putting "lie" to the 'see a snake, kill a snake' adage (at least in the eyes of intelligent, observant minds). Next?

When I was in 4th grade, back in 1990, an astronaut came to give a presentation at our school. I asked him why Pluto was a planet if it went inside Neptune's orbit. I pushed further and asked him if it was a failed comet. I asked a lot of questions and eventually we ended up at the end of it all; when he told me about the heat death of the universe. And I was traumatized with existential dread as I imagined the sun winking out of existence and everything in the universe coming to an end. Oh ten year old me, chill out.

They were p-hacking and had zero repro rate. So, no, unless Joe wants to do yet another video on bad science and abuse of statistics (on which Derek from Veritasium has already made several videos), he should not give any more exposure to disingenuous quacks.

Trying to name and classify all these things always makes me think of the 90's cartoon "Gargoyles". When they woke up in the modern era in New York, they took the names of the different Burroughs and rivers in the area, since they didn't have names until they had to routinely deal with humans. They scoffed at the human need to name and classify everything in sight.

No-one was more space crazy than me when I was growing up - I had so many books about space and memorized all the facts and figures. So reclassifying Pluto was a non-event for me compared to all the other changes and discoveries I had to learn and re-learn. Pluto was mere nomenclature.
