Today I’m painting a simple landscape using a full toolbox of techniques to demonstrate real watercolor painting. We are going to create a graduated variegated background wash, use glazing techniques, do some sponging, scraping out, negative painting, calligraphic marks, dry brush technique, rigger work and more. Join me as I develop this simple riverside scene and then try one of your own!

I want to thank you for inspiring me to paint again. My Mother died a few weeks ago. I paint in acrylic but recently bought some WC paper along with paints and my brushes......your free and whimsical style I believe will help me immensely 🌼🌺🌷💕🌼🌺🌷💕🌼🌺🌷💕🌼🌺🌷💕

I know where your mind is. I've been there all week. Yesterday I decided to paint the hardest reference photo I could find and do it in my journal, thinking I wouldn't be able to do it and if I used my journal, it simply wouldn't matter if I screwed it up. The painting turned out to be the best I've ever done and there it was stuck in my journal. I wanted to kick myself. Lol. Thanks for doing what you didn't feel like doing. It's appreciated. I hope you have a good weekend and can recover from the builders. It is tiring having strangers in your home day after day.

Love that you think out loud as you paint. You make art develop and evolve with every stroke, and make it turn out wonderful even when you start out without a plan. You are such an inspiration.

Thankyou both for taking the time out to make this video for us. I am sure we all would have understood your absence and wouldn't have wanted you to add more unnecessary stress, but I really appreciate all the effort you put into this channel. You were the first person I came across when I first started using watercolors (advent 2023), and I can't say just how much you have helped me. I pray your troubles will soon be sorted, love from a snowy Yorkshire x

My 290th. Although you where not pleased with this one you gave us an example how to use mild judgement. We are human so we judge and have thoughts about everything. I red someone who compared thoughts with farts. They are a bit stinky and when you allow them to stay in your head your brain gets stale. So open our " windows" for fresh air. Trying not to judge is almost impossible but when we see them as farths it becomes easier😂😂😂 😊wim

Hi Diane, I watch other watercolour artists too, as well as yourself and I have noticed the word value creeping into everyone’s language all of a sudden and I think it means colour, so have you idea why they are using value instead of colour all of a sudden, many thanks, I know I will get a straight answer from you x. Of course you. Have the Breton to speak too and understand I must say I really liked the piece x

Hi Diane! I know it’s been awhile & I had to unjoin…know anyone with a sale on semi-operable bodies for a boomer? 😁. Yea, LOTS going on and unfortunately, not much painting because sitting up for more than 5 minutes, tortures me. My 1 kidney has decided it’s too tired to carry on…and, unfortunately, kidney failure has a bit of a domino effect on everything else-the worst of which…I had been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in my 30’s bc of my genetic disorder. I made lifestyle changes….and somehow, after about 5 years, I had regained some bone density. Still at risk, but out of the danger zone. The past 6 months has dragged me backwards 30yrs. In the past 2 months, I’ve had 4 stress fractures and 2 more serious fractures-including another compression fracture in my spine. I’m kind of a mess..but Liz & her wonderful hubby are coming over this weekend-I cook them a Chinese New Years feast and they’re going to help me re-arrange furniture, take some things to store at their house until I can move…and HOPEFULLY get a little painting done! Anyways-a question: that plastic palette (or is it ceramic?). That fits your Kuretake pans..I searched through hundreds of pages on Jeff Bezo’s site… (and checked all your affiliate pages for the US); can’t find it. I’ve got 2 palettes that others said they had used for them-but can only fit maybe 12 pans in because of strange shaped wells. (Meeden & Meijer) Just TRYING to get more organized..every month I’ve budgeted money to get more storage solutions. When I was in the hospital a few months ago, Liz and A came over, put all my Western & Eastern painting supplies in plastic crates…and most of my electronics, Dr Kitty Leela…I had a break-in the time I was hospitalized before that…things just walked out of the house. Luckily, they either didn’t see, didn’t want or had NO idea what some of my pricy Chinese antiques were. I had my most used paints with me at the hospital…but my Rosa’s mono-pigment set disappeared. (At least they have good taste in paints 🤷🏼‍♀️😂). Liz got me a new one before I even knew they were gone for sure. While I do have a small security system now…this is a 200yr old house. If someone wants to get in, they will. Anyways, still sorting the crates out, got some new shelves they’re going to put together for me this weekend…since I seem to be a bit accident prone. But back to the original question..would love to have all my Kuretake pans in one palette rather than 3 boxes. I hope you and yours are doing well! Dr Leela sends paw pats and purrs to your fur-children! She’s taking VERY good care of me…although she FaceTimed with my eldest last night and argued with her about something for 30 minutes. Daughter said SHE understood…and she’ll be here next month for a few days to help out. 😹🤷🏼‍♀️. Which reminds me…my neighbors have me writing daily updates for “The turbulent romance of Romeo & Leela”-kind of a modern day feline Romeo & Juliette. He sneaks out of his people’s house, comes down here and flings himself at my windows at 2 am. Both have been fixed…and Leela’s a bit of a cougar considering Romeo is just 3, but 🤷🏼‍♀️. It’s been going on since about September and they are absolutely smitten with each other. I put some treats on the porch and half the neighborhood was in an uproar…Romeo, although very active, seems to have a bit of a weight issue. I just let him come in now…and don’t mention how he raids Leela’s cookie dishes online. A funny thing? We always thought Leela was strange because she LOVES Brussels sprouts and asparagus..cut up, of course, steamed in butter. Just out of curiosity…my younger daughter had sent me a heart shaped food dish last week. So, last night, I warmed up our leftovers, put a little of both in the dish-enough for both of them..OMG, they were in heaven! 😂❤. I had to sit down and rest a minute, they lapped up the last bit and I had 2 large felines in my lap…purring & healing. 🥰 I told Liz and my girls…but some folks on our community bulletin board…everyone has an opinion and some seem to be there just so they can start something. Z🤷🏼‍♀️🤫 Xin nian kuaile! 新年快乐! (Happy New Year!). A CNY wish I thought you’d enjoy! (I did this on a calligraphy scroll for Liz & Alexei…although my dragon needs a bit of work 😂) May you have the spirit of the dragon and horse; aged yet full of vitality. 龙马精神 lóng mǎ jīng shén 🐉🧧🏮 ❤☮️
