Folks, this is not a reply to Shad, it's a reply to you, the viewers. This is primarily a HEMA channel, about HEMA - historical research, treatises, period art, archaeology, living lineages, all that kind of stuff. I have been making these videos for over 7 years and have over 1000 of them. Not every HEMA video I do is a reply to someone. Please stop seeking drama where there is none. Just enjoy the CONTEXT.

Facta non Verba. When you learn to translate the Latin before you speak, you will know the answer. You also know, by virtue of the way that you started off, I didn't wait for you to respond. I know that is very important that you realize, you are about to become the focus of that internet war. If you even try to reply as if you are going to pass off what you type, as another old f-cker, not worth listening to. Any response is like hitting a restart button on an internet war or just trying to be funny. You must have old enough when you began to type, to know the consequences of a rather obvious point is made as a joke. Now what I expect out your sorry ass, is nothing beyond waiting a little while I to stoop to eat a little sh-t, because I stopped to do more that scroll past the point of pain to make sure that anytime I pass by another entry with only a joke dumb enough see how long it take me to sag back into my chair. As oppose to anything else. Before making sure it is worthwhile to take enough time to stop while angry enough to get up those damn stairs, before I make is a policy to be a threaten before it becomes necessary to make it perfectly clear to be the reason not to bury the lead. Next time you respond to someone, make sure it around Fact non Verba the hard way. Next time you run into anyone FROM the FGH, tell hi, as message that ran into. Tpr Stadler

I am a passionate consumer of your, Shads, Metatrons, Tods... and other channels from the sword community and besides the fact that I am into the theme and the passion you put into your videos one of the appeal is the civility of the community itself. The respect, the rational debate, the ability to hear out the other side and accept other views and your own mistakes with a noble goal in the end, this is what the world community would need to be for us as a civilization to go forward. Hi Matt, I think both of you and Shad's videos so far have focused on the definition of 'historical' but I actually think you're both missing the other side of the phrase 'HEMA' - martial art. Would be great to hear your thoughts on the definition of the term. In my opinion, saying you can learn HEMA by playing around with a longsword is like saying you can learn Karate by randomly fighting with your fists and feet. In that same fashion, common soldiers in medieval times who worked out how to use a sword by trial and error were not practicing a martial art. Playing with long swords to work out how they may have done it is valid historical study as long as it's combined with study of other sources. But you can't call it a martial art.
@not-a-theist8251
@not-a-theist8251 3 года назад
Completely agree
@colbunkmust
@colbunkmust 3 года назад
"Martial art" is just the practice and application of combatives. I would disagree that common soldiers weren't practicing martial arts when they were practicing with their weapons without formal training. Many martial arts have their origins in the lower classes without formal instructions and historically many didn't rely on manuals or treatises (for example Savate). The term "art" here is misleading because it really isn't an art as defined as: "the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects" but rather as: "skill acquired by experience, study, or observation" When combined by the term "martial" it really just means "fighting skills". If practicing by trial and error is going to make you a better fighter, then it absolutely is categorically practicing a martial art.
@The_Captain40k
@The_Captain40k 3 года назад
@@colbunkmust I like your reasoning, this is why I’d love to see a video from Matt about this subject! @colbunkmust 3 года назад
@@The_Captain40k I agree that an individual may not be able to re-create a specific martial art form without the influence of specific source material, as with your with example of Karate, but that separate development in and of itself is its own martial art in its own right.

Glad there is no drama. You two are some of my favorite RU-vidrs, and I really enjoy both of your content. I LARP as well as study HEMA and the LARP vs HEMA b.s. is everywhere. Honestly I think the discussion deserves more context and less salt. Not all LARP is the same, I've been to several events that are very serious about historical accuracy, as they are trying to deduce effective techniques for large scale battles (20+ vs 20+ combatants). And I've been to LARP events where there is the lightest touch rule and a magic system. It's a spectrum. I think some LARP's are directly born from where HEMA ends, and I think all LARP's have value to some degree. If nothing else it's a fun gateway to HEMA. I think there is value to large scale battles with poorly or untrained combatants, as most combatants in history were poorly trained conscripted people. It has merit as a field of study in my opinion, plus it's fun. Thanks for reading this, and thanks for all your great content.

Love both channels! I learn so much from both. HEMA or Not HEMA, I would love to see a video on the proper uses of the Victoria Police Cutlass. Its a very simple and elegant looking sword. Seems a very practical weapon as a side arm, its what my starship captain in the sci-fi stories I'm working on carries at times. Its not by any means a officially issued weapon of the Interstellar Fleet Service in the 25th Century, but she gets away with it because as a cadet she got herself nominated as "cultural ambassador" based on her swordsmanship. So while other similarly talented service members get to take their musical instruments, dancing shoes, and art supplies with them, she took her sword and then first used it in combat as a ensign resisting a boarding action of a transport ship she was a passenger on. 🙂 P.S. Actually a video on the possible use of historic weapons in a sci-fi context would be an interesting video. I model my captain a bit on Michelle Yeoh since I started writing the space opera about the time I first saw 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and I added the sword as one of the several idiosyncrasies my captain has nurtured in almost 40 years in the Fleet, along with singing Gilbert & Sullivan tunes. After watching many videos, doing some reading, and thinking hard, the Victorian Police Cutlass seemed the best weapon for her, it also avoids stereotyping her with a Japanese or Chinese weapon.

I actually find it quite healthy that 2 people with "contrasting" ideas and meanings are able to discuss it out. @Ford It appears the overly vocal and emotionally guided minority has found me. If your argument is the truth it'll speak for itself. Acting terrified of a lone actor just makes the chosen position look downright disingenuous, manipulative, and dishonest as if what they have to say could rip the entire charade apart. Pretty sure the entire point of this video was to tell people like you to bloody well cool it, which based on my experience was wholly unnecessary, but yet you prove me wrong. So, good job? I guess people are that immature over this?
@danorris5235
@danorris5235 3 года назад
@Ford You're the new evidence. That was clearly explained. No clue how there's confusion surrounding that. Also, you use deliberately emotionally charged language and display personal offense over an Aussie whipping foam phalluses around in the woods while claiming it's "dangerous" to ignore him. You cannot reasonably expect anyone to assume on any believable level that you're speaking as an actual third party to the situation. I'd seriously like to know how it's "dangerous" for me to decide to ignore Shad's opinion because he clearly has no authority on the issue at all because he's not part of a controlled group, see very little evidence of people wanting to start a tween rampage between adults, and don't feel personally attacked because there's some guy surrounded by Kookaburras saying something demonstrably false. With that "logic" in mind I should feel fear because there's somebody online somewhere out there who could be saying an arming sword is a longsword, and assume that could bring the entire institution of HEMA down to a state that will never be recovered from. That's bloody ridiculous. This "Shad said a thing and people need to get fired up over it" is literally a non-issue, which happens to be Matt's entire point in making this video. But, yeah, go ahead and get riled up because someone doesn't see the need to broadcast a nothingburger in the first place while inserting an opinion you claim isn't your own while asserting that if I don't hold the same one it's "dangerous." I think it's adorable. By all means, continue to windmill yourself endlessly. It pleases me.

Hey Matt! I was just wondering if you'd be able to give your opinion on Stoccata School of Defence based in the east coast of Australia? I've been wanting to study and train hema for sometime now but haven't taken the plunge yet and I noticed that Stoccata have quite a few branches in Sydney that are close enough to me. Hi, Stoccata have been around for ages and their main instructors are pretty famous. I can't imagine Matt would have a lot of experience with specific HEMA schools in Australia. I'd recommend reaching out to the HEMA community in Sydney, or in Australia more broadly, and seeing what they think. Many HEMA schools will give you your first lesson free, so it could be worth going to a few to try them out, _and_ to ask their opinions of other schools. The HEMA community (at least up in Brissy, and I would assume the same is true down south) tends to be pretty supportive of each other as a default, so you shouldn't have to worry about getting a negative review out of their "competition" unless there are some genuine problems.

Shad was respectful, but it was clear as day he is arguing to win an argument, not to actually make solid points. Shad eithet wants to drum up drama for fun (i hope this IS the case) or his ego is growing a bit too large bc his arguments were petty semantics and obnoxiously pretentious, being "that guy" who argues to win not for the actual discourse. Matt is classy to stay out of it bc it would be an Expert punching down at an Amateur. It's an intellectual historian who lives history vs a dramatic entertainer who loves history. No contest. Matt would end up humiliating Shad, and Shad would end up exploding the drama and his ego. Plus you know how youtube drama goes down. Shad has more passionate/young fans willing to troll for Tribalism rather than actual argument, while Matt has more adults and a more mature audience (hence the sub comparison; RU-vid caters towards kids and entertainment more than to adults and intellectualism / education). And the problem is less the content creators and more the trolls/kids who would tilt heavily on Shad's side despite Matt having the win in actual argument. Not worth the trouble.

Trying to resolve the points of Matt and Shad: Maybe there is a class difference: If you are rich, you can afford fencing masters and treatises. If you are born poor, I would assume that you learn mostly by brawling with your peers, like the creative anachronists. As a desperate poor lad, I would assume that you try out "wrong" things to save your skin - and regularly make mistakes that cost you your life. By contrast, I would assume that a fencing master would know most of these desperate tactics, and prepares his pupil accordingly. In the battlefield, however, I would assume that even the poor conscripts get some instruction, as discipline, skill and cohesion is key to the unit's success. However, the poor peasants don't have the same (physical) educational background as the rich, so I would assume that this instruction will be simplified and dumbed down, i.e. prioritising cohesion and discipline over skill.

I can respect that you guys don’t want drama between the two of you. However I feel the drama in general is a response to Shad being inflammatory. He’s always making videos about why something sucks or why someone is wrong using mostly himself as a source. He’s always making response videos to tell people why they are wrong. He presents himself as educational channel (both in his manner of speaking and by calling it Shad’s University). So when he very stubbornly insists that he's right and everyone with more experience and knowledge is wrong the result is predictable. It’s no surprise that Shad’s actions would cause drama in the community at large and that some of that would leak into the comments on Matt’s channel, especially when they are literally responding to each others ideas. I don't support personal insults but if his ideas are getting made fun of he really has only himself to blame.

Shads side of this is more that HEMA is the idea of reconstructing historical martial arts and theres multiple ways to go about that and that those should be acknowledged as HEMA too even if they don't follow the traditional way HEMA is taught or shown

I really felt the "drama" is coming from people who themselves are unable to have adult level conversations with people of differing (not necessarily opposing) views. Sadly, that number is far larger than it ought to be in a world where we have the collective knowledge of mankind to pick through and bring up intelligent talking points to allow thoughtful discourse, but it is the world we live in. You don't have to fully agree with someone for their point to be valid. On the same token, you can be utterly wrong, even if you really believe something to be true. EDIT: It is also true that one person's subjective experience can very much be true, even when another's experience vastly differs (or: just because your group is open minded, doesn't mean someone else has come up against "purists" or "elitists" or other such types that put someone off to the whole thing).

I find it even harder to believe that even the most adamant fanatics would believe that. I would hate to see the feading but I would love to see a video collaboration with them playing as they were with the formal decalration fo feuds of the feuding laws declared over petty squabels like the prounanciation of machicolations or why a sword has a certain colour on the scabbard.
