Not all SATA to IDE Adapters Are The Same

Testing some IDE to SATA adapters because of a PC that isn't running quite right with one installed.
Some models of IDE to SATA adapter don't seem to play so nicely with SSD's. They also seem to have a much more limited transfer rate than they should.

Super interesting video. Thank you for taking the time to record, edit, and share it with us all! What are your thoughts on using ssd drives that come with ide connectors versus using a converter?

I have one of each, IDE to SATA and SATA to IDE and I use them for my DVD drives. I also have one of those 32GB KingDion SSDs

The larger ones do both ways, depending on which port you use, or the switch and jumper on the other one. The KingDians I bought because of your video :-) That's how long it's taken me to get around to using them!

Got to admit that after some time suffering with the unreliability of cards, I usually immediately go for Startech first time, every time now. Battling with the cheaper versions was a waste of time and money for me.

However, not messing around with cards means I never end up making interesting videos like this one :-D

You make other equally interesting videos :-) I did comment on your 2nd Pi video but Vimeo logged me out and lost my comment without telling me. I must do that again. Startech do make some really good kit. Sometimes I think they go a bit overboard on the prices though, I don't mind paying for quality but at times they try it on a bit. I wonder if the Startech would be better. I have to be honest, maybe I was expecting too much from an IDE port, it's easy to forget the limitations of older hardware.

Startech branded adapters use the “Marvel” chip. Interesting to compare lindy’s JM (JMicron?) with Marvel.

One option we did not see you try was to ALIGN the mSATA drive before further testing. The freeware version of Partition Wizard did, at one time, support an ALIGN option. Some features were moved to the licensed version, so try the freeware version first to confirm whether or not ALIGN is supported in the freeware version.

I bought one of these recently to try and recover some old files from an old hard drive, the computer just gets to the first bios splash screen and just freezes. I’m hoping it’s something to do with needing the right jumper settings on the old hard drive. Just thought I’d mention this 😆

You need to put the hard drive in master mode and make sure it's not slave for the red chip

I got one two years ago and I quit trying to use it for technical problems but just started trying to see if it works. Some guy said you have to put the hard disk on master to work. I did but did not work so. How did it work the one that had problems or was it due to cable settings on the hard disk?

Hello sir, do you think using a IDE adapter for your SATA HDD is much faster than using IDE HDD to your IDE port (Motherboard)?

I have a bunch of those red adapters, and definitely don't work any good with any sdd I've tried. I thought it was one of the boards that was faulty, but the 3 I tried performed exactly the same, they are garbage in my opinion.

I remember a longtime ago , I tried to install windows XP on compact flash drive using on IDE adapter . It worked pretty well, but the adapter didn't last long . I had to buy another one , but not of the same brand . The new adaoter made the compact flash too slow , it took hours to install windows XP , booting up was too slow , browsing windows slow too . If only I could repair the first compact flash to IDe adapter . It has no vusual damages

Can i use this adapter to run it on usb to sata ?
@TheTurnipKing
@TheTurnipKing 3 года назад
It stands to reason that they'll have limited transfer rates, because they're passing through an active adaptor. In effect you're adding an extra layer of translation: So you have the theoretical max speed of the onboard interface, the adaptor and then the device itself, and at best you're going to be able to go as fast as the slowest link in the chain.

25:46 hmm... run the (psu) splitter cable. one goes to the power here (adapter), and the other one goes to the hard drive. ANYWAY, THX FOR THE GUIDE!! 😊

Sata II standard theoretical max is describe 3Gbps roughly divide by 8 for 375 MB’s - overhead for protocol chipset variance etc below 300MB’s would be near the maximum etc

Hi again Paul. Late comment here but I thought I would add my limited experience with PC's. You will never get the same transfer rates from an IDE controller compared to SATA. IDE (ATA133) does 133 MB/s (hence ATA133). SATA1 will transfer up to 150MB/s, SATA2 300MB/s (which happens to be that motherboard your using) and SATA3 600MB/s. So you have two bottlenecks. 1. IDE is far too slow and 2. Your motherboard is slower than the Toshiba HD and Samsung SSD as I would think that these are SATA3 rated. Bear in mind that mechanical hard drives and older (or cheaper) SSD's will not be capable of the rated SATA speed but should perform much better when matched with their rated interface. Hope this makes some sort of sense.

Hello again :-) Thanks for the detailed comment. I was aware of the various bottle necks, I just had an expectation that the IDE to SATA adapter would be able to work closer to those limits than it appears to. I've since got another board to use in this machine, although I've not put it in yet... besides I never actually finished this like everything else! The replacement board has some SATA 3's on it, so that will help. Although in all honesty, for the purpose of this build it doesn't matter, I can wait for things to finish :-)

@@Error42_ I have many projects on the go unfinished :-). My latest project is running windows games (DVD install type) successfully on Linux. Just to make my previous comment clear, it doesn't matter the speed of the interface. It is the speed of IDE it has to finally go through which causes the bottleneck (which is 133 MB/s) and that all you can achieve.
