I feel like a lot of original xbox games could fit here... Crimson Skies, Black, Jet Set Radio Future, Breakdown, Brute Force, Otogi. Plenty to choose from.
Phantom Dust, Crimson Skies, Jet Set Radio Future, Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance, The Bouncer, Summoner, Divinity II: Developer's Cut, Aquaria, Hydrophobia: Prophecy, Mars: War Logs, Legends of Aethereus, King of Dragon Pass, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Planescape: Torment, Two Worlds Epic Edition, and Dear Esther come to mind.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic for sure. Other mentions: Legends of Dawn, E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy, and Zeno Clash. I'm not entirely sure what your criteria is for this series, btw. Is it based on a game's lack of success and popularity? If so, the last two might not qualify.
I don't have any hard criteria for the series, but it should be a game that isn't brand new, was underappreciated or less successful than it should have been, but has merits or innovation worthy of being remembered. I've gotten suggestions for E.Y.E. for my Cyberpunk series, and Dark Messiah is an interesting choice, definitely one I'd like to cover someday. Thanks!
Might be a small thing to praise so much but the simple moment of flying your ship at the beginning into the space station felt so expansive and the way the ship moved felt like it was really in a weightless environment more than any other game.
It's an unfortunate lesson that creators need to learn: if you want to make a trilogy, series or franchise you must make the first one amazing enough to get people invested. So many great ideas will never be seen because they were all planned for sequels to games people found boring.
Very weird for people to give up on a game so quickly, even more given the fact this was released in 2005, when only few games were released in any given year and it was way harder to get your hands on the copy of a new game.
This game is my all time #1 for reboots. It had so much potential and even flawed was so much fun to play with a great story. Thanks for this video. I really wish this game could make a come back...
More than any other game, this will always be 'the one that got away' for me, so to speak. Issues aside, there was just so much promise, a fantastic story, beautiful settings, and fun game play. I will never stop hoping that someday this gets remade and completed.
T H I S G A M E ! omg Im so sad that this game is so forgotten.. This was such a masterpiece. I play it once every two or three years. Such a great game Thanks for the vid
Me too Sky Max. I don't know why but I just thought to google "what happened to Advent Rising?" 5 minutes ago and got here. I loved this game, I wonder if I could play it on an emulator?
This game was my childhood or more like my preteen years. I still hold this game to heart. Great story telling, just wish they could have at lest finished the trilogy with books at lest. To round it out. I hope one of yall can tell me they did. I even got a little teary from hearing the sound track.
Thank you for this Video. This is again a great Video and you earned my Support for your Channel. TBH I am just here to watch the "Not Forgotten" / "Retrospective" videos. They are well researched and written. Keep up your good Work! Also, you are now one Patreon richer.
Wow, I'm flattered. Thanks so much for your support! I hope I don't let you down. I'm thinking the Not Forgotten / retrospective videos are my niche right now, so you can expect more of those in the future. Thanks again for becoming a patron. I appreciate that very much!
That cliffhanger ending has me furious when I heard they scrapped the rest of the trilogy. This whole game was a constant build up to an ending that all but guaranteed a sequel that would have been most likely ten times as powerful of a story as the first. This is still one of the biggest bummers in all of video game history.
wow I played the game many times and never had any major bugs. IF only everyone would have this expeirence.. Im so sorry to hear about so many issues.. oh well :(
Solaxe S Well you clearly haven’t played the game. Because it has one of if not the best story ever written. Do you really think a game as clunky and buggy as Advent Rising would have the love it has if the Story wasn’t fantastic.
It's just to bad that Card uses his religion and writting to endorse racism and bigotry. It's just so hard to enjoy his work anymore. No way I'll ever put money into his pocket ever again. He'll just use it to further hatred and discrimination.
A sequel would be awesome, but like I said in the video, it would likely require Donald Mustard personally buying the game's IP from whatever dark pit it's laid in for these past years and self- or crowd-funding the game. It COULD happen (hey, we're getting System Shock and that game was in IP purgatory), but it's very unlikely.
I just bought a og xbox and my gf got me this game we found at some half price book store! For like 4 bucks lol. Works great. Im loving it all over again.
Thanks for the video. This is one of my all time favorite games, glad to see that I'm not the only one that enjoyed it, despite its many flaws. Another game I feel the same way about is Breakdown, by Namco. Would love to see you do a video on that game.
As an aspiring indie game developer, it's great to hear about the successes and failures of those who have gone before and laid the foundation. "Not Forgotten" is a great title for this series.
I played the crap out of this game back when I still had an OG Xbox. I have a fond memory of this game, regardless of how flawed it is. At the time I didn't have a lot of money available, being a teenager in a fairly poor family, so this was one of the few games I could play. Been wanting to play this game again for the last couple of years, and just recently found it on GoG. Excited to get back into it again.
Speed the Speed right broooo they need to make a advent rising too !! Let’s ride up and tweet on Donald mustard Twitter and comment on his latest pose to make advent rising 2
All I knew about this game as a kid is that they had a million dollar contest. Now that I see the trailers/gameplay. it looks dope! It feels and looks like halo 2. It would be cool if a remastered version released. I know it'll never happen but it would be cool.
I sadly did not like the video. I shockingly have never heard of this game and would've liked you to explain its story beyond the premise. For example what kind of decisions did the game monitor to effect the story? Did that occur in the game or was it all hanging on the sequels? I'm probably going to forget about the existence of this game in the next 12 minutes so I'll never know.
I remember seeing this game previewed in GameInformer and thinking it looked bland as heck. Was not a fan of the protagonist design at all. I think these first impressions are what sunk the game. Just looked bland. People like me who never played it never experienced the bugs or great music, just some bland art direction and questionable protagonist design.
One of my favorite games and game stories of all time. There's something very special about this game. Played it on the original xbox at least 3 times; later on the PC but the lack of gamepad support, only partial was not the same. I bought an original Xbox not long ago just to play Advent Rising. Most other original Xbox games I like became bc on the xbox one. I still have Faith someone will, at least, remaster the original.
One of the greatest games I've ever played. The story, the scope, the premise, its been in my top ten of all time since it came out. It just had a lot of heart and I wish a more experienced team would take the reins of Advent Rising and do a remake.
what a wonderful look at a game that I have always had a soft spot for, I always figured I was one of maybe 10 people who played this "rough cut gem"! I remember reading about this game and it's PSP little sister, in game informer. I was very excited for it, especially after finding out OSC was writing. I bought it, played it, loved it, even amidst some of the soul crushing glitches.
Yeah the glitches are pretty awful, but it had a lot of promise. I'd say it would have done a lot better being delayed a bit and bumped up to the next generation of consoles (the 360). Would have allowed for more technical prowess, better framerate and more time to iron out the bugs.
2019 anyone? I was very young when this came out (like 10-12 years old), but thank god I’ve remembered it throughout the years (I’m 22 now), I really hope they come out with a remake or another one
"how can someone love it with glaring flawes" just like anything, ME2 is said to be the best in the series when its just narrow tube shooter and not a rpg or how Breath of the Wild is just empty open world but bare bones story, yet its said to have masterpiece of story telling. People will love anything
I always joked that this was Mass Effect before Mass Effect. This game should have been PC only, all the time and money spent porting it to the xbox was a mistake!!! Really good video, you just got 1 more sub!!!!!!!!!
Personally I loved Advent Rising. Picking it up again a few years later it was less successful in many ways, but largely due to an insane difficulty curve because I'd decided to start on hard after forgetting a lot of the strategies needed to win. I'm surprised your video doesn't feature Bounty Hunter, the single most epic piece of music from the game (heard in the same trailer that announced the million dollar competition). It certainly had its bugs and its flaws, but overall for me the game was a hell of an experience from start to finish, and I'll never get over that cliff-hanger ending. Some of the powers were utterly broken by the end, but that was also what made it fun - it wasn't so much a "can you win" as a "how do you want to win", as seen in other titles like the Deus Ex series and more recent franchises like Dishonored. Slowing time may have been stupidly overpowered, but that didn't stop it being fun in Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy, and Advent Rising lets you execute whole combos on enemies before they drift out of range. Picking up a handful of enemies and throwing them at the nearest wall may not be fair, but in some of the later fights it's justifiably necessary, especially in that after-credits fight. Advent Rising was a flawed gem, but it'll always have a special place on my shelf and in my heart. If anyone kickstarted a sequel I would back it in a heartbeat.
I love most of the tracks in the soundtrack, but I carefully pick music for my videos that emote the right feeling for that section, and aren't too jarring and make the voiceover too hard to hear. I agree, the rough edges and brokenness of the powers is kind of what make it unique and engaging. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Fair enough, there's epic and then there's appropriate. Dat theme song tho... DONA EIS REQUIEM DONA EIS REQUIEM LACRIMOSA DIES ILLA RESSURGET ET FAVILA
The ending to this video put some tears in my eyes. Years later I still love this game and desperately hope it'll get a second chance. It probably won't, but I'll never forget it.
Thanks Micah, really appreciate that! Most effects are done in Vegas, with some plugins and stock footage here and there. I disagree with the forced rental plan from Adobe (Creative Cloud) so I only use their older software.
Huh. I haven't checked out Vegas in a while. Looks like it's caught up a bit in the last few years. Yeah, Adobe is a bit of a corporate monster these days, but I tend not to think about it as I work for another corporate monster who doesn't mind paying for it. (Laughs. Looks over shoulder to find corporate overlord boss standing RIGHT BEHIND ME - HOW DID YOU GET INTO MY HOUSE!?!?!) Lol At any rate, great job!
Yeah it's kinda silly. I've used Photoshop for over 20 years, I use bleeding-edge Adobe CC 2017 at work, and Photoshop CS2 (2005) at home for these videos, and there's not much of a difference functionality-wise.
Nah, not really. There's some nice little things in there that maybe speed work-flow up some, like the newest update that brought some of the After Effects text capabilities into Premiere and and some auto sound leveling. I've been doing those in After Effects, Audition, and Pro Tools for so long, though, that I can already do all of that stuff one way or another. It doesn't even really save that much time. I know the TV station I work for has some sort of static licensing at the moment, and we're frozen at CC 2015. I'm not sure what the financial details are and how that affects pricing, though. I don't even see any deals like that on Adobe's site, but I'm told by the powers that be that's why we can't update. (rolls eyes)
Oh, I never knew that these were the same guys who made Infinity Blade! It makes perfect sense that the guys who specifically sought out Orson Scott Card to write for Advent Rising would ALSO be the same guys who specifically sought out Brandon Sanderson to write the tie-in novels for Infinity Blade! Thanks for the info, and I'll keep an eye on them in the future! They obviously have good taste in authors, and it seems to carry through into their games. (Infinity Blade was fairly story-light, but it nailed the atmosphere pretty well, and is one of the very few legitimately good mobile game series' that aren't just ports.)
Yeah they also went on to work on Paragon too, which was an entertaining MOBA-type game that was killed right after Fortnite blew up. It's too bad, they can't seem to catch a break in the industry.
It is one of my favorite games from when I was a kid. Everyone who wants a reboot with improved mechanics but updated design with classic mode/ visuals say “agreed”! Suggestions welcomed.
Spidey Fan 95 I’m thinking the exact same thing. Although I would love a sequel it would be pointless as I don’t see how they can carry on the Choices made from a game released over 10 years ago into a current gen game. So in my opinion a Soft Reboot makes the most sense. Keep the story and soundtrack the same and improve on everything that was critiqued about the Original. And then Boom 💥 Masterpiece.
You're not wrong about much. I just finished this game, and yeah, it really picks up around the training montage. I'm guessing some people didn't wait that long before returning the rental or deciding it wasn't as good as Halo. Some scenes, clearly helped by the music, were magical. Enjoyed it thoroughly, though I'm aware I was playing V2, not OG. (still definitely got some crashes)
Halo 2 campaign it's so fakkin Epic! But... Halo CE has a much better ending, also Halo 3 got me replaying it for hours. Mass Effect 2 will always be my favorite game of all times. Mass Effect 3 sucks but because of James Vega and Steve Cortez, despite i'm from mexico i just can't go that way with the unnecesary insults/quotes in spanish "Oh This Is Loco" hahaha Mass Effect universe doesn't really fits with that immature some kind of "badass" dialogues. Mass Effect 1 has probably the better overall story and antagonists.
This games sequels and megaman legends 3 (DASH3) are games that I've basically given up hope on. We're entering an Era that will be defined by Virtual Reality ... it's the new "3d" . And I doubt that these two games (advent&dash) will play well as a first person VR puzzle shooter. I could be wrong, though. I *want* to be wrong.
...It plays nothing like Halo. Advent Rising has one of the blandest, most-predictable sci-fi stories ever written and was further marred by some of gaming's worst controls and graphical optimizations (with the somewhat "playable" Xbox version actually outperforming the sad PC port). The "moral decision-making" and character deaths are hollow and pointless, later being self-devalued by the game's shoehorned plot. If the developers put their hearts and souls into this game, then they were truly soulless. I played through the entirety of Advent Rising: Ending, Epilogue, Post-Epilogue... I saw it through to the end, but my persistence was unrequited. *Nobody* should *ever* waste their time on this game.
I really loved this game. Played through it on the original X-box a few times. I was very sad when the trilogy was cancelled. The PC version I've never really gotten into - probably because so much of what made them game stand out for me was tied up in those weird lock-on controls. Using the mouse wheel to shift targets just wasn't the same. The dev has begun showing some life signs on the Steam page, but sadly it seems it won't amount to much. A buggy .NET launcher that allows the game to run slightly better on modern systems, the soundtrack and comic book released as DLC... This game badly needs a remaster for modern systems. Sadly, it'll probably never happen. I'll just have to continue waiting for a fully functional X-box emulator...
Great video. Very well done. This is easily one of my favorite games. I searched the games title to take a nostalgic trip back in time and your video nailed it. Also had several details I never knew. This games story was one of the best imo. Gameplay was stupid fun too. Especially once you got your "God powers". I don't remember any bugs but I did play it 14-15 years ago. Anyways, great video. Got a like from me for sure.
I dont mind linear games. Even rpgs. What really bothers me however, which plagues the industry today, is really poor writing. Its like they sacrifice all substance for gimics and an illusion of meaningful choice. I never even heard of this game.
Wow..... just hearing the sad but nostalgic music makes me wanna cry. No other music, storyline, characters, and/or memories I had with this game could never be so impacting in my childhood. Literally being the first space-game besides Valkyrie that I played, it was so interesting to become immersed in a successful storytelling experience. Also the villains and power ups were hard to maintain, which made it more interesting since I had to practice different ones. And I also played Aeon Flux, which was also cool, but not as interesting though. Probably why not much copies of it were out.
I always assumed it was the releases proximity to the Xbox 360 launch that fucked it over most. I remember waiting for this game forever, then by the time I picked it up, everyone I knew was on that next gen hype train and nobody was buying up Original XB Games.
I love this game sooo much man....I want to play it again...I was forever waiting on this game to make a comeback....they said some company named ziggurat bought the rights to it...man I hope they actually do something and reboot the series us fans of this game really deserve it...if not...I’m going to acquire the rights myself and hire and publisher and writer and do it myself!! This game and a few others...Heavenly Sword, Zone of the Enders, The Getaway, were all gems of there time that need to resurface!!
I really think peoples nostalgia is working hard on this one, the aesthetic similarities it has to halo are borderline plagiarism, with the visual not "borrowed" from it being heavily inspired some of the worst and short lived trends of the 00s (Think Venga Boys, boybands, shark tooth necklaces and those So Fresh CDs). The protagonist relies on more cliches, tropes and plot armor than even some of the worst anime offenders, always got the impression he was some sort of self insert, so to hear that he was the product of the creators highschool daydreams explains a lot (he also shares a striking resemblances to Donald Mustard as well, coincidence?). The only thing that resembles a video game Majesco ever published was Psychonaughts, I am not exaggerating here, I am pretty sure their biggest commercial success was cooking mama; and look there is nothing wrong with publishing Wii Zumba games but my guess is that it is complete chance this game even exists, a more discerning company would have never take this concept to release. So if you liked it, more power to you but even in this day and age it is unlikely to ever see a reboot, of all its shortcomings it is just too dated, its built upon all the worst and short lived elements of the 00s BUT, a perfect storm is the right way to put it be thankful there was a company with enough money and lack of sense to fund something like this in the first place. TL;DR Teenage boys fanfic writing that should never have been made into an actual game
I appreciate your support and posting this video regarding this aforementioned super game. There's always competition, that being said this colorful, bright sci-fi, futuristic human mind powered concept of gaming is sorely needed in games, such is now a wonder in online free game Warframe. For an epic jumpstart this game should be reintroduced to the internet and perfected like Warframe and World Of Tanks. This would push development to a phenomenal high with a guarantee permanent grip into the future of gaming. Please see how well WOT is doing despite their nerfing of their tanks, and constantly patching plus fixing of the game. No haters here, I still love him play the game. But Advent Rising needs a nother go and now.
This was the game that Majesco put all their eggs in that basket. They wanted to get the halo audience to buy this game because Halo was huge at the time. They made so many bad business decisions that made Majesco a shadow of its former self. For years I was hoping for a BloodRayne 3 and sadly will never get it, because of Majesco's stupid business decisions. Now they're paying for it.
I just wanted the story to be finished, like perhaps if rights weren’t a problem, Orson Scott Card could write a book or trilogy telling and completing the story.
This game is an necceserry teacher of how to make a really good opening to a trilogy. Advent rising commited many mistakes mass effect one didn't, which resulted in it's success. Essentionally it's hard to imagine how mass effect 1 would look like without advent rising's flop.
I bought this game at release on Xbox. I was completely invested and looking forward to the sequels. You're right in your comparison too. I loved halo and the only other game to scratch the advent rising itch was mass effect years later.
So about the targeting, I don't know why you would criticize it, as it is where the game really shines. Maybe you played it on PC, where it doesn't work properly unless you hack the configs and use a gamepad. Flick targeting works together with dual wielding to allow you to effortlessly target and shoot at multiple enemies while performing acrobatics. Something which would otherwise be impossible to pull off even with a mouse. In the few scenarios later on in the game where this is actually useful, the game is probably one of if not the best third person action game around. And that still holds.
played this game a few years back. came all the way to the last boss. couldn´t beat him, I tried for days. the controls are clunky, it has obvious flaws, some missions are less than interesting. and the awkwardly oversized feet of the humans, but the atmosphere! the story! the music! the Fun gameplay of tossing enemies around!
I remember this game. Left me in awful condition. Not because I hated it. However that story messed me up bad I really liked the first girl you meet. However I never got any compensation for her as when I got to the part where you are attacked at that wierd counsel place. I couldn't beat that boss fight and it messed me up bad. Now I was new to gaming and was nowhere near where I am today. This messed me up Bad enough to make me protect this game with my life. I'm bad at talking care of games but this one is stored away safely even today. I had dreams or nightmares of this game I don't even know I just remember wanting to save that first lady and that I was sooooo freaking mad. XD yet I was also hopeless I don't know what to do. I fear going back and facing that boss even though I know I could probably beat him with my hand tied behind my back. I just know it won't be the same anymore I honestly wish I could make my own advent rising remaster if it was for sale and in my price range of like 100 bucks. XD I would buy it in a heart beat. No regrets.
I played this game a year after Mass Effect 2 and I thought it was ahead of it's time. I never owned an original xbox til the last half of the ps360 generation so I picked up games I thought were interesting as an outsider. This game is a flawed gem for sure, but so memorable.
I played this on xbox when I was a kid, definitely too young to appreciate some aspects but I loved it anyway. I always wondered why it disappeared! Thanks for the video.
