Ignoring competition is such an underrated strategy in med school. Different specialties just operate at different levels

So so so relatable. Competition and comparison can really steal your joy. I felt so much happier when I stopped comparing myself to others in med school and just focussed on being better than the student I was yesterday. One fact and skill at a time.

I just wanted to imply that you are an old soul, young lady. Really, really nice to focus on the here and now, but also understand the importance of where we come from and see where we are and have to go. Simle, clever, positive way of seinä the world not only in medicine , but in every aspect of life. Very niiice! Enjoyed the video a lot! Keep it up!

Hey, a doctor from India here. I can relate to the feeling of coming from a family in which you are the first doctor. I think all of us go through this in varying degrees during medical school and the reason for this has been perfectly described by you. We are all smart and competitive is the reason we are in medicine. It's like a pool of smart people hence having such doubts comes with it. From my experience, you just have to love medicine to keep going. If that purpose in you, that love in you for the field is alive, you will eventually rise above everything. You are not less than anyone. Everybody has his/her own journey. :)

Elizabeth - I just watched this Vlog and IMHO it is bang-on. In life, I have found that overall, in the long run, our biggest obstacle towards achievement, enjoyment, and taking action is just simply "ourselves". If we could just get out of our own way at times the difficult part would be done! The funny thing is that whether you think "you can" - or - whether you think "you can't" - you will be correct!

Great video and such an important topic! I think with any professional, healthcare career (and probably other careers too tbh), there is ALWAYS an element of imposter syndrome even when you leave university (I'm sorry to say). When you're responsibly for the health and welfare of other human beings, you will always want to be as good as you can possibly be/the best whilst being aware that there's others who have way more experience than you. It's a tough feeling to beat but avoiding comparison is always a good thing to do!

This video made me realise that I have the same syndrome and I didn't even know that many people had it as well, and I think I should start to focus on the moment and not stress myself out to overcome the depression that came along with this syndrome and the competition of the medicine faculty.

i started working as an intern 2 months ago, as a physician in emergency, that's a 12 months process that all medical students go through, and it's the first time we deal with cases. its fine if i do mistakes in my finals for sure, but when i do that with the cases its insane, like suturing someone's thumb with a thicker prolene suture and needle, and or giving the the anesthesia with a large syringe and see them screaming in pain and telling their relatives they want to leave then knowing after that i could've avoided it if i used like an insulin syringe.

Hi Sister, Is medicine going to be very tough, cuz I am really looking forward to being a cardiologist, Everyone says that it's not going to be very easy, and very very hard, so people tend to scare me, which demotivates me, soo what are your thoughts? and BTW I am a topper, so will it be difficult for me?
@Widad.A
@Widad.A 3 года назад
You should definitely like sciences and have a strong will to become a doctor. I was a med student but I had stronger interests toward other fields and living in a hospital wasn’t enjoyable for me anymore. Don’t listen to people who want to scare you because you can be everything you want to be. You just need to be sure that this is what you truly want and if you don’t see yourself doing something else instead.

I really want to start a youtube channel but I just can'tttt 😭😭 Imposter syndrome and feeling everyone around me is just overall better than me has been in my life as far back as i can look. I got my first yr result day before yesterday and I came second in class (im a 1st yr medical student, now heading to second yr) and even then I couldnt believe the result, felt it was someone's prank or there was some error in marking, totalling etc. So I am not even sure if this result is gonna help me be a bit confident or I have to spend my life like this being underconfident. :/

1. There will never be enough evidence to ged rid of your uncertainty - learn to embrace it; 2. Some competitiveness you cannot change - learn to ignore it; 3. What is your real worst-case-scenario - how bad is it actually? 4. Medicine might not be the right thing- that's ok.
