I agree but you also cant just let them do what they want. seen it too many times with someone joining at 50-60 with traffic flowing at 70. I dont mid slowing a bit to let someone slot in but if it's clear ahead they need to match their speed.
@radishpea6615

The problem becomes when those on the slip lane expect traffic in lane one to give way and dangerously drive into lane one. There is not always space for those in lane one to move to and if towing or driving a slow vehicle are not going to want to scrub off speed for a faster vehicle.
@wrightwoodwork

@markgambrill you can I increase the gap in front or behind by either slowing or speeding up . There is always something you can do . All they have to do is match the speed of traffic on . If you disagree you are wrong in thinking you cantvalway adjust to the situation you always can

Yes, but joiners need to do their best to merge too: accelerate briskly, match speed then merge. The "50mph brigade" don't do the first 2 parts, which makes merging difficult then they moan because others fail to make space for them.

@farmpunk_dan
@farmpunk_dan 7 месяцев назад
If the concept of a zip merge were ever taught to drivers in the US this would be a GREAT idea. Where I live I think such a sign would just cause people to stubbornly merge even earlier and create more of a one-lane slowdown. I’ve seen them miles long with the other lane sitting empty. Somehow this is the time when everyone wants to play by the rules and be “good little drivers” 😂
@PedroConejo1939

The Germans have well-publicised campaigns when new ideas are introduced. Seems to work well - this includes zip merging (which I remember from the 80s) and more recently, Rettungsgasse (which is also being implemented in the UK, but they forgot to tell anyone). Being Germany, these are also backed up by legislation.

As far as I take sliproads, to my knowledge it's up to the person joining to get up to speed and make sure they can merge safely with the traffic that's already on the carriageway. The person in lane one does not have to move over for them, however if there is space to do so, you might as well do it. If there is no space, back off slightly to allow the merge to happen.

Yes, but there are many layouts that always have slow moves on the slip when there is a tight curve on the approach to them. E.g. 51°51'27.7"N 2°10’26.4"W for moves from the A417 westbound to the M5 north. Observe it in Google streetview, and note the advisory speed on the curve. Alright in a car, but more awkward in an HGV.

This type of useful tuition is rare as the opportunity to experience lane closures may not be within the time or distance for the series of lessons that pupils have. Living in a rural area, it takes at least 20minutes to get to our nearest motorway or dual carriageway and the chances of encountering a lane closure on those multi-lane roads within 20mins/1 junction round trip defies the percentages. Having got to the motorway, travelled 1 junction there and back and the 1 hour lesson is over. We live in the Midlands that has a good road network, I pity those that live in even more rural areas. How long does it take to get from say, The Highlands to a dual carriageway, let alone a motorway?

I was travelling through Greenock a few days a go and there were a set of roadworks and signs up saying use both lanes and merge in turn - only place I have ever seen that. I've had occasion on the M25 at night where four lanes go down to one and there is slow moving queuing traffic. In such cases, I have used the opportunity where drivers in the adjacent lanes move across to their "next lane over" and by doing so, in turn they create spaces for me to move into my next lane over, namely the lane they just vacated. Repeated this process across each lane change and by doing so I was able to leave my complete merge into the one live lane until relatively late and still make it before any red X. I've actually got dash cam footage of this.

Yes, generally those on a slip road SHOULD give way to those already on the carriageway, but you should ALWAYS sacrifice priority for safety. And there is no such thing as queue jumping in the context of traffic flow. For example at a crossroad if there's two lanes going forward, but the second lane is also a right turn, people so often bottleneck into the left lane and cause a massive queue instead of using both lanes and merging in turn. Admittedly I do feel a bit smug when the second lane is empty and I drive right up to the lights, but on the other hand it shouldn't be like that and we need to get out of this "me first" mentality and not congest it for everyone else.

At 1:26, that's a good example from the car in front as to how not to change lanes. Namely in a way that leaves you straddling two lanes because the traffic has come to a standstill whilst you were changing lanes. This now blocks you from moving right up to the traffic lights. And what if the traffic in lane 2 remained stationary for an extended period? Lane 1 would now also be blocked for the same extended time, even though it's clear beyond there.

At around 0:48 I just knew you were going to mimic that kind of voice, purely from the lead up to the point you were coaching about slip roads and "Give Way". I remember you doing that in previous videos, on one occasion about lane hogging.

@@123MondayTuesday You truly made me laugh with that. You really know me all too well! Btw, you left out the USA. Remember, I've crossed the Canada USA border around 400 times over the past 20 years or so. In fact I'll be heading back to Vancouver Canada soon and doing a few more cross border trips. Wouldn't surprise me to see you at the border holding up a sign that says "Hello Ibrahim from 123MondayTuesday". 🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇲

In my view slip road markings should be changed to have something other than the Give Way markings. As it stands a slip road onto a main road IS a Give Way, it's only common sense that says it isn't really, and as we all know common sense isn't really that common... If the markings were changed and the rules updated to say it's a merge in turn lane then, with a little tuition and about 50 years, people might get the whole merge in turn idea into their heads.... maybe

This is a great example to show the merge early crowd. If everybody merged early here, the throughput through those lights using only a single lane would be terrible.

This is bad planning. Closing 2 lanes at the same time is forcing too many cars in 1 spot. If the left lane was closed 100m before the middle lane, it puts cars in a double merge-in-turn which will help avoid conflicts and make it less likely 2 cars are going for the same spot

Aid traffic flow by all means, but don't cut another car up in the outside lane, all in the name of letting someone join. Make the person who has the give way, actually give way.

Ref merging traffic to dual carriage way (which your vehicle was on )You were really unfair to your student, ash your really need to get a grip you seem to have a problem with the Highway Code and what you think should happen ? Albeit I agree with you in a lot of your driving strategy (don’t get involved in an accident if you can help it)

Personally, I was slightly surprised at Ashley's tone on a couple of occasions in this video. I have been an educator in industry for 40 years, including on the job skills training (which learning to drive is in essence) and i think that the level of agitation from Ashley is uncharacteristic and not really helpful. The student did well I think, not to react or crumble. There was nothing from Ashley that wasn't correct factually, but delivery was unusually confrontational for this context. This comes from a massive Ashley fan who consumes every second of every video and learns loads from the content.

Sometimes a commanding tone, is needed, as a quick change of driving from the student is required. Say, to avoid a hazard. If the student didn't respond to a earlier recommendation, then a stronger instruction is required, before an intervention becomes necessary. If the student was to start slowing down for the merge on the dual-carriageway, or even, try to come to a stop, then an aggressive command is needed to prevent a dangerous situation. It's all dependant on the dynamic between student and instructor. When I learnt to drive, I told my instructor, that he can be commanding, and while I might not like it, I'll obey - then I'll ask what I did wrong.

@@johnbooth5199 good points John and I can see your logic. The only point we may have to disagree on is that in my view there is never any time when an aggressive tone is acceptable from any teacher, even a driving instructor where there is potential for danger. For context, at 50+, I am going through my motorcycle full licence training. My first instructor took an aggressive tone regularly during the brief training I had with him. It was 100% counter productive - I quickly sacked him and now have an instructor who can get a point over quickly and effectively in dangerous situations without the need for aggression and it's therefore much more effective. I agree about dynamic though - the student in this vid was a bit younger than me (to say the least) and I think that makes a difference to the dynamic. Poor Ashley must be thinking I am conducting a character assassination - I'm not and I didn't think he was aggressive. I was just a little surprised at his approach given what I perceive typically in his other content. Thanks for the response John - good debate and really good to have this kind of discussion with other people who are interested in all of our driving improving. 👍👍

@@philcaffrey Bear in mind that I am in my mid 40's, and am used to being spoken to in such a fashion. I only learnt to drive in the last few years. I had 2 hour lessons, and as the lessons progressed, I could tell my instructor was trying to find-out how I best responded, so I told him not to be afraid to be commanding when the situation requires it. And NEVER be afraid of upsetting me, as I'll say If I don't like how i'm being spoken to. I fully understand that getting someone who is hesitating, to do the right thing, when merging onto the motorway, might require harsh language.

Personally if you think its acceptable to ask an aggressive question @00:14 but also expect the learner driver to process what you said aswell as deal with the immenient hazard whilst knowingly being filmed. I think you need to take a step back (more than you think you do) stop enjoying the sound of your own voice. Normally I like your videos but I felt sorry for this guy.
