It wasn't Ray Wilson's nor Phil Collins' fault!!! Released after a long hiatus and marked by significant lineup changes, the album captures Genesis navigating a new musical landscape without Phil Collins as lead vocalist. The documentary explores the creative process behind the album, shedding light on the challenges and aspirations of the remaining members. We'll check the lives of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks around the new horizons drawn at THE FARM recording studio in Chiddingfold. #genesis #philcollins #mikerutherford #tonybanks #classicrock #documentary #raywilson #progressiverock

Brilliant album with Ray, better than many late Genesis albums. It's a shame Ray wasn't invited for the Genesis documentary, even for few minutes. Furthermore, now that Mike and Tony have time again, please contact Ray and make a second album, fans are waiting, and please feel free to give the LP another band name if you consider the collaboration with the great Ray harmful to the "Genesis" brand.

JCM does it again!! This is a masterpiece documentary on an obscure Genesis catalog. I learned SO MUCH from this presentation. Especially agree with you that the B side tunes left off the album made much more sense, but alas, they tried to appeal to mainstream and struck out on that attempt. I just would have appreciated it more if they changed the band name and went out on tour, small venues, and built up their repertoire. There was potential here!

I'm happy to read your comment. Glad you enjoyed this one, it's a difficult topic but i've always wanted to make this episode ever since i had the CD i guess hehe. To know you learned a lot here makes my day. I think the 90s works of Banks, Rutherford and Collins alone deserve an even deeper dive. Like you said, changing the name made SENSE, and book a smaller tour yes, i think MIke Rutherford was hesitant to carry on with the show you know? He had commercial success with the Mechanics where Tony wanted to give it a shot! Thanks so much for watching!

Fantastic little documentary. As a middle aged Genesis nut who has seen the band many times since 1987 I actually feel ashamed that I didn't give CAS a chance. I enjoyed the opening two tracks but for me the album lost it's way after that. The B sides totally escaped me and I have to agree that a few of them are outstanding and it would be great if an expanded version of CAS was released. Ray Wilson was a talented vocalist who deserved his chance. Unfortunately in the insipid world of music which was the late 90s wasteland, Genesis were not as popular as before. Perhaps it's time Ray Wilson was given the respect he deserves. A full expanded version of CAS beats We can't dance by a long long way and might even sneak above Abacab.

Great in-depth review! I agree with others, that if the band (like Mike and the Mechanics) would have been given a different name, it wouldn't have had such a backlash. It also didn't help that Genesis gave up on CAS, like they were agreeing with the critics. Fans would have loved to hear Phil do one of the CAS songs in a medley, or have Ray sing an encore on one of the later tours. It would have given CAS some much needed legitimacy.

Another reason why “Calling All Stations” was critically frowned upon by Genesis fans when it was first released was the changing landscape of the mainstream music scene. In the mid to late eighties when the band reached its peak with “Invisible Touch,” the popular artists of that time were Huey Lewis and the News, Hall and Oates, Tina Turner, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston and others. By the time “Calling All Stations” came out in 1997 as “We Can’t Dance” came out at the turn of the Grunge boom at the end of 1991, the music industry had evolved being interested in Boy Bands and the slow rise of Nu Metal as KoЯn was getting more popular following the release of their sophomore album “Life is Peachy” the previous year and fellow band Limp Bizkit releasing “Three Dollar Bill Y’all” that same year in 1997. I mean, no one who was watching MTV at the time was going to be liking Genesis at that point since their glory years were all behind them. Still, “Calling All Stations” is a criminally underrated album since Ray Wilson does sound similar to Peter Gabriel in most of the song’s especially my favourite “Not About Us.”

The reason many people are interested in Calling All Stations and Ray's tenure with the band is simply because, in retrospect, a great album was made. It was also a very twisted, dark, unexpected and in a way, kind of dangerous, brave and sexy way to end a band - which is very un-Genesis.

Genesis came to me in the 80's through MTV and the video "That's All" they became my favorite band. It didn't hurt that Phil Collins was about to peak. I was a teenager, and everything hit all at once with solo projects, collaborations, and Invisible Touch. I bought it the day it came out and loved it. I still love it. That album also has some killer B-sides that could have been on the album. Genesis did that alot. WCD came out, and I got to see them in Miami on that tour. Finding out that Mike and Tony were going to make another record after Phil left I was hyped. I got it the day it came out. One of the local radio stations who always played Genesis played "Congo" a few times. I saw a commercial on MTV for the album during "Love Line" I think it was called. The tour was announced. I was stoked. Then the charts came out and it was not good. Genesis vanished in the US. Atlantic did not support them after the album dropped and it flopped here. Then the tour was cancelled. I listened to the album a lot and collected the B-sides. I even tracked down the Stiltskin album. I enjoyed it, but over time CAS just got played less and less, because i heard it enough. That's the thing about the previous Genesis albums. They keep me coming back to listen again. CAS just doesn't do that anymore.

Very insightful vid! Appreciate the coverage of Kevin Gilbert, who is criminally underrated and/or overlooked. I think the "better B-sides" were left off because Banks & co, saw this as a break from Genesis tradition, so left out the more traditional sounding material. For me, CAS didn't connect because the lyrics were so sub-par. It felt like they were all about the same thing...

It was impossible for Genesis with Ray to keep up with Radiohead the Prodigy, Portishead, Oasis, The Chemical Brothers, Spice Girls, The Verve, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam .. every 1970's band and 1980's band were regulated to the sidelines. Even ELO, who released their comeback album in 2001 encountered radio silence. It wasn't anything to do with Ray or Genesis.. it was the times that we were in back then. The London Earls Court show was well received.

Not quite catchy enough for radio play, which would have helped the album gain acceptance. They ought to have realized that and given the song a little "pop oriented" touch-up.

Calling All Stations is truly the albatross around the neck of Genesis. It’s up there with Judas Priest Ripper Owens era, Motley Crue John Corabi, and Van Halen 3 with Gary Cherone. When you announced you were reviewing “Calling All Stations” I immediately dove into the album. The verdict: It’s interesting and overall a good album. Ray Wilson may have not been the best choice (Paul Carrack would’ve been perfect in my opinion) but he has a unique voice. The music (like all of the bands output) is very of it’s time. Definitely “ Congo “ is my favorite but “ Small Talk “ really got stuck in my cranium. I’d give the album a 6 out of 10 ⭐️s PLAY LOUD and PROG ON

It wasn't his fault at all. The live version of Carpet Crawlers Ray Wilson did with Steve Hackett, is my second favourite version of it. The first is the original studio version. Which brings me to my next realisation. They dropped the ball. Because Calling All Stations was an opportunity to ask Steve Hackett back to Genesis. With the loss of Phil, both "classic" and "invisible touch" fans (I stopped after Invisible Touch), weren't going to accept a new singer. But if they brought back Hackett THEN THEY WOULD HAVE HAD A FOOT TO STAND ON, with at least one faction. There's a version of "There Must Be Some Other Way" live, that says this was not Ray's fault. It was so much better live than in the studio version. That's because most of the songs on CAS have a very sterile drum approach. It's hard to tell if they're machines or not. Live, they sounded much better. And Mike Rutherford is not the guitarist Steve Hackett is. Great Bassist, great ideas man, but not Steve Hackett. No point doing should ofs and could ofs. But I know it wasn't Ray's fault. They honestly should have given him another chance, but their music needed to change with it. And I don't think after all that success after ABACAB, that they were willing to change that formula, although CAS sounds more like Mike & The Mechanics. The aim was of course to be a successful change in Genesis fortunes once again, like Trick of the Tail. To lose a singer and survive. Ray was that singer. He has an awesome voice, and he has that Gabriel "darkness" needed for Genesis to be Genesis. Because they were sometimes a "creepy" band. Like a band out of Hammer Horror. "Mama" is kinda half creepy, but their early stuff is like haunted Victorian house music. Had they brought back Hackett, I think that would have helped them alot.

Great documentary. The most shocking aspect really is the extent to which Mike and Tony were focussed on commercial rather than artistic success. People need to remember that by this time in the 1990s, the 80s and it’s overt pop-rock commerciality was out, along with airplay attention- those days weee done. (Collins struggled in this period too.). They needed to go back to the theatre (like Yes did) and reconnect directly with their audience. But you get the feeling they just didn’t fancy it. The song selection for the live tour with Ray was shockingly bad.

I am a hard core fan of Genesis... to a point. After Duke, it was a matter of diminishing numbers. Invisible Touch was the point where I'd get off the train. They had proven they could exist in the pop and prog world simultaneously, but the gated drums and Emulator synths finally pushed me away. When 'Calling All Stations' came out, I was curious at the very least. I heard Wilson's vocals and thought 'This guy is Gabriel and Collins combined. Smart move!" I heard the title track and dared to hope. The album itself was a let down, but I'd hoped they would continue. That was seriously naïve of me. It would have been interesting if they had decided to actually work with Wilson on more material. At some point, I have to wonder "How much is enough?" in terms of sales, and popularity. How interesting would it have been if Banks and Rutherford said "Screw it, we'll play theaters, and make music we want to make?" Again, a naïve view, given the amount of bean counters, managers, employees, and other hangers on, who depend on the Genesis machine. Interesting that David Longdon, Francis Dunnery, and Kevin Gilbert were considered. As much as I appreciate Wilson's voice, it would be an equally, or more interesting even, for David Longdon (With Nick D'Virgilio on drums!) to provide vocals, and artistic contributions to a new Genesis project. (And Dunnery on Lead Guitar!?!) Or even better, form a new group. As equals. That way, Banks and Rutherford wouldn't have a benign dictatorship to run. That's not a criticism, as much as an observation. So many possibilities are lost in a music making machine. Whatever the case, it happened as it did. There is no guarantee that Stiltskin would have reached the heights, and Wilson may very well have had the best career possible because of his association with Genesis. Coulda shoulda woulda. As a guy who made a very brief living, in my youth, as a musician, I'd trade places with him. And I definitely can't dance. Brilliant vid, sir.

I agree that getting off the train starts with Invisible Touch because that created a very dangerous ocean of very casual fans...you know? And i do like the album but i'd never put it up there with their previous material no way. Yeah i don't see Stiltskin "making it", no way, Wilson did the best career move he could. Maybe that's why I ignored Calling All Stations when in came out. What I'm hearing here sounds quite fine though... even if it feels a bit dated for 1991. If I were to listen to them without any knowledge I'd place them in the early to mid 80's. I can really imagine "Nowhere Else To Turn" sung by Peter Gabriel ca. 1982... and Wilson himself does sound fine, too. All in all it looks like I should give this album another chance.

This was good, i usually have troubles with opinions on documentaries that tell facts, well, you clearly didn't advertise this one as such, and also who doesn't hate snarking remarks on an official documentary anyways? Not like this is one, but it was good. I think that something that was missing was exploring the internet archives for the Genesis pages from that time, music magazines and even old forums were Genesis fans were pretty divided on this album, that means not everybody hated it, the opinions were very different in europe. Anyhow, i agree that the B-sides could've been better on the album, or as an extra release, i wouldn't throw away any song from the main album, but some had the potential of replacing others if they had been completed or worked on more, i also really liked how you edited that part with the horrible presenter, that guy deserves to be mocked more lol. What i disagree is on calling like half the tracks "Fading Lights", if anything, Fading Lights its very similar to previous Genesis tracks, i also disagree on tossing away Uncertain Weather and i think that Small Talk should've been mentioned with clips of the band saying they loved that track in particular (during the 2007 interviews), but that's something i already did so who cares really. I would've never made this video, not only because it could be argued that i'm lazy or i have little time to make videos, but for its title, i suck at coming with atracting titles, if anything, i could've done an SMALL TALK episode about how the things played out, well, i already did but it was like a minute long lol

Thats the same hubris that kept them going when ant left, when pete left, and steve. What the hell ,we don't need Phil either. The only thing thats odd is 'the new guy'. Not that there's anythign wrong with the new guy, its just that Genesis didn't even let Chester or Daryl join the band. So to suddenly have three new people, including a singer, thats a lot to take in. I don't care for most of the songs but come on, who says NOT to get that but go ahead, pick up 'Genesis to REvelation". Every Genesis fan will likely have at least one they'll say 'dont bother with'. But I dont think ANYBODY has ever blamed Ray for it.

Thompson was NOT happy about that btw, and resented the 2020 reunion without him. 1998 with just 2 original members was a stretch agree. Watching and listening to these shows was strange. Mike Rutherford is not as key in the 80s-90s sound as Tony and Collins...the more i think about it. Rutherford's signature i think was much more amplified in the 70s period. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I'm not sure about 'resented', he said he was fine and understood. He and Phil had that 'falling out' and haven't really talked since. For 'joining' the band I can understand that they had trouble with people leaving and maybe didn't want to be like 'yes' with a revolving door. Everything changed in the nineties because, well, everything changed. But its worth pointing out that Chester and Daryl were 'committed' to play with Phil. Read between the lines and that could mean 'would rather play with Phil". Thats whats odd because at THAT point letting Daryl and Chester join would make more sense. But often creative people are very insecure, they both admit that Chester and Daryl are much better 'musicians' so maybe feared a complete loss of power. Power corrupts as they say, even in bands. Not sure about Rutherford, not sure how you break that down, but if you went through the catatlogue you've listened to more and more recently than me. Both guys admit that as things progressed Phil got more dominant, but it was making hits and money and they had solo albums so didn't care. Keep in mind that 'mama' was actually Mike, so sometimes they mix up instruments so you don't actually know whose melody it is. All we know is that if its long, its likely Tony.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories 3 месяца назад
I know Phil got more dominant...but if we really take a look at the compositions, Mike"s Mechanics influence in post 1989 Genesis is absolute. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Well yeah but that was only one song. He also had the drum beat for mama, but if you listen to mama, the 'boom boom bat, boom boom bat boom' is about the least interesting thing about it, and is hardly 'writing a song'. Tony says that into the eighties, once they had solo careers, the songs became more about jamming together. Mike also did land of confusion, but apart from lyrics it was very much band composed, and there are a LOT of other songs on there. Phil began doing more lyrics because he developed a talent for it. But even then we're mostly talking 'no son of mine' and 'we can't dance' on an entire album.

Nice work as always Sir! Your references to N64 James Bond brings back memories - though I was a Sega Genesis guy, my friend had N64 and that game was an all-time classic! As for Ray I dont remotely blame him - but I honestly dont like the album and since I believe Tony Banks has always been the primary songwriter I would lay the "blame" for my low opinion of the album on the songwriters and honestly - no artist in the history of music has an ENDLESS supply of great musical ideas to create and transform into great songs/music. I got into the band with Abacab and went backwards as they band moved forward. I personally prefer the older stuff, but I also believe nobody made better pop music than Genesis. I believe that with Collin's growing success Banks and Rutherford were willing to move in the same direction and I don't blame anyone who wants to be paid for their efforts....I don't believe they "sold out". Genesis for me is in my top 3 all time (Zeppelin, Beatles and Genesis) - so this album for me should have been known as the "BRW project".....

Maybe the album should be called There Must Be Other Songs! Stiltskin is a weird name if you look into it. Thanks for watching@

Este disco se pudo haber llamado fácilmente "And then they were two..." 😁

We can’t dance has some great songs. Maybe a a bit long and it ends with fading lights. Brilliant song

Sucha shame, a culmination of bad choices by Rutherford and Banks and a close minded fanbase. This could have been a lot better for Genesis..Wilson is a brilliant singer, frontman!

I suspect Rutherford is the one to "blame" here. His need for commercial success past Phil's rocket launch moment into his solo career....

Genesis lost me after the self titled. I wonder if the Ray Wilson effect would have happened back at TOTT if someone else had been brought in to sing instead of Phil?

Hey Mike! Hope you enjoyed this one. The Trick of the Tail scenario you mention is fascinating. I also think past 1983, this is a different band. I should make a video of this What If!
