House sitting can be amazing. We've been pet and house sitters since 2015. Our experience has helped us ask better questions up front to make sure we're in for a good situation.
In today's video, we're sharing some of the questions we ask on the video call. Some of them have been learned from past house sits. Others have been learned from others finding out the hard way. Thanks to social media, thousands of sitters can pool our knowledge!
Tonight, we are meeting home owners and their dogs on a Skype call about a potential sit in their home over the holidays. As we prepare for that call, we thought we'd share the questions we'll ask with you.
Are you a house sitter? What questions do you ask to make sure you're finding a good fit? Do any of these questions surprise you? Have you considered house sitting?

European house winter sits-ask how they heat their home. I found out the hard way. The family had a 250 year old home that was very drafty and they heated with portable butane heaters with refillable tanks. The service only came 2x a month and only accepted cash. I wasn’t able to get the house warmer than 50 degrees and it would get down to 30 or lower at night. During a cold weather snap the house was in the high 30’s during the day for two weeks. It’s a good thing I brought a lot of cash and that I am ok with cold weather. I also found out that the best mobile provider for the country didn’t work well in their village. Despite being cold and wearing my outdoor winter gear in the house, I really enjoyed experiencing small village life. The village had fewer than 10 residents. Now I know to ask, how do you heat your home? Will I be responsible for paying for it? Which mobile carrier works in your area? Do I need to bring cash? The sit went from 5 weeks to 3 weeks to 4 weeks and then they wanted to change back to 5 weeks. I didn’t have enough cash to pay for refilling the canisters for another week so I declined their request to extend. My pioneer spirit was also waning and I need to thaw out. Lesson learned, it was an adventure.

1. Confirm the dates 2. Non smoking home? 3. Quick WiFi? 4. What is the pet’s routine? 5. How long can the pet be unattended? 6. How does the dog behave on the leash? Is he good with other people? Is he good with dogs? 7. Has the dog bitten people? 8. Is there yard work to be done? 9. Are there cameras in the house? 10. Is anybody going to be in the house? 11. What are the sleeping arrangements? 12. Do we need a car? Address? 13. When do we have to be there? 14. Will you be available if there’s a question? I would like to add: 15. Where does the dog/cat sleep?

Excellent video! I just had a local sit where the dog was aggressive and attacked me. Luckily it happened during the initial meeting with the owner. I told her I could sit the rest of her pets but the deal was off if I had to work with the aggressive dog. I found out the last sitter was bit and left the job after the first day. The owner was great and arranged for that particular dog to be boarded. VERY important question to ask!

Oh, what an awful situation to be in when you show up! Fortunately, she was able to find another option for the aggressive dog, but that could have gone really badly. It's why the question is on our Skype list!

GREAT video! My husband and I just did our first house sit - enjoyed it and learned a lot but realized when I listed to your video - we could stand to learn a lot more - ideally from you as opposed to having to learn it ourselves the hard way. Thanks for sharing your experience so generously.

Hello there . 7 sits this year. 2 in New Zealand, 1 in Vancouver and 4 in the DC area. In addition to nailing down the date, (which some people seem to have a fluid perception of) we also ask them about what time they are departing and returning. This can make a significant difference to our own arrival and departure plans.
