I love that they managed to be hit by trucks going both directions. Sure, they were parked sideways, but those vinegar and TnT trucks seemed to be speeding in opposite directions and might have collided with each other anyway.
This is a good example of the kind of joke I like in "modern Simpsons". It's not driven by awkward, forced dialogue or out of character behaviour, and it doesn't consist of "character says something, then the camera moves to show a visual of what they just talked about". It's a funny scene. Cartoony, not necessarily a "Simpsons" type scene, but funny.
I’d say the way it yanks you around is fairly classic Simpsons. You half expect the vinegar to cause a catastrophe, but it doesn’t. Things are fine. Then a TNT truck inexplicably collides and causes an explosion anyway.
The milk truck's tank catching on fire is my all time favourite. Next to Hans Moleman being driven off the road by Otto and breaking just next to a tree...spared for once....you would think! LOL (granted its a scene from a non canon Halloween episode).
I loved this joke so much as a kid. It's funny cuase to this day we still see the reverse. Where the viniger and baking soda cause an explosion for no reason. So seeing this out of context, as an adult, still makes me laugh 😂
Holy shit, does that work? Cuz the cops won't nail you for having 3 Ring Binders in your car the way they might for caltrops. I mean, you'd have to get insanely lucky to get a single binder under the tires, but I wonder, would it even work if you got that lucky? Probably not
@@ThingsICantFindOtherwise Yeah, most likely. Brilliant solution: Carry a few dozen. Even a trunk full of fifty 3-ring binders probably makes you look more like a model citizen than it does anything else. Now _that's_ using your noodle
I mean it would have been funnier if you didn't get the second reaction bit and it just was the car sitting there and the TNT truck came. They messed it up by cutting back to the passengers and then cut back to the street shot so you knew there was gonna be a final bit. Its not a really funny moment but for season 18... Not that bad
You mean something like this? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XIZAf5J3EU4.html I think it would be a bit funnier, but personally I think the biggest issue is that the trucks go too fast that you can’t see what’s in them, although maybe I’m just a slow reader.
@@maggiecelentano9927 and what is the merit of the extra cuts that you feel have merit? in my opinion the merits of a joke are in service of being humourous which makes the extra cutaway seem a noticeable loss in surprise for the humour
I have a hard time putting my finger on exactly how the pace of later Simpsons gags bothers me. Like it’s not as simple as just taking too long. Something is missing, I’m just not sure what it is.
It's just not as funny as classic Simpsons, which would have had a gag stacked with several-jokes-in-one. Whereas this is a one-joke gag that meanders and doesn't pay off until the end.
I think in this one the gag is actually completely solid. But a decade earlier it would have been one continuous shot rather than cutting to the guys in the car. Maybe a little faster too.
