It’s interpreted as “girls are the best presents.” As in they are precious. Only conservative Koreans found the lyrics to be offensive. There was nothing really offensive about it.

Dont try to twist the narrative. It wasnt the majority of Koreans that got offended. Most of the rants were from Westerners which did not understand the meaning of the song and were quick to try and cancel BTS in Twitter. Most Koreans understood the meaning of this song and if you ask, (i am living in Korea atm), they would tell that it describes the feeling the teenaged boys have in their minds.

agreed. never felt it was offensive at all. however some Knetizens did criticize a bit in the name of feminism. BTW that's ok with me. however it wasn't really that loud during that period of time. anyway we all know how things work in Kpop industry, BTS did come out to apologize for the lyrics and said it wasn't meant to offend any women in any ways. they were just singing as young men who were really interested in the opposite sex. hey, Jungkook was literally a teenager at that time and the rest were too or just above legal age.

I understand that it's standard in society that many of us live in today for women to be objectified so majority of people don't see anything wrong and yes, younger people are generally less educated than those with more experience and education so I don't dislike bts for the song as such and for me, the tune and melody is fire. However, I love love love bts today as they are more educated and progressive than some others so I will pick up on when old fashioned ideas are being put forward. I dream of a world where even teenage boys understand the problems of objectifying people. I don't see anything wrong in striving for the best world. Most people don't write or say things to be offensive. But it's still a problem when people perpetuate these ideas and people end up subconsciously behaving poorly with women as result when they don't even knew that they're doing it. There are many ways to express fun and growing up so if bts wrote this song today, I am sure that they'd find other ways to express themselves.

i personally love this song and dont have a problem with the lyrics. tbh this song isnt even really sexual its just the wording was kinda weird for some women. but they have many other songs with suggestive lyrics that arent "offensive" this song in my opinion isnt offensive either but i can see why some may be uncomfortable with the wordings. however bts are NOT these innocent idols who steer away from suggestive lyrics. many armys need to accept bts are not the typical idol. they curse, have opinions about society, and sometimes have suggestive lyrics even in recent music. the problem was never if the lyrics were too sexy/suggestive it was them tip toeing on the misogynistic line which i again personally didnt care cause im used to western music being like that in EVERY genre even country. anyways my point is anyone can feel how they wanna feel about this song but people need to stop thinking bts are too kid friendly for this or that theyre really not. they may not be as open as american celebrities or as vulgar in every day public conversation. but they are by no means "kid friendly". yes some armys are young and they acknowledge their influence but theyre still grown men in their 20s. i think many people forget that. im saying all of this because people think because they dont do as much hip hop/old style songs anymore that they completely changed or censor themselves which they do and dont. theres a time and place. they curse in music but try to not curse in front of cameras in normal conversation. i think it boils down to respect more than trying to keep a clean image. its less about their image and more about how they influence young fans. i hope this long unnecessary rant makes sense to someone lmao im just tired of people saying things like " bts are different they dont curse or make music about drugs and sex" when that is not true. its very far from it lmao.

Yeahh that's true but I think almost all of their songs are kid friendly but there are some songs that are not but I don't find any thing wrong or offensive in this song bcoz it is just them going through their adolescent and this things are typically normal to be felt in adolescent ...I am experiencing it and all the young armies would agree too that this kind of thoughts arises this during time and all ppl have gone through it or going through it

A lot of people were offended by that line, "Girls are equations and us men just do them". Personally, I took it as "do them" meant they were puzzles to be solved, not a sexual act. RM was honestly shocked that people were offended by the lyrics and that they could be considered misogynistic. It was definitely a learning experience for him. He apologized and has since run his lyrics through a few professionals in women's studies before releasing a new song. They don't really release songs like this any more. Anytime they release a "love" song, it's usually with ARMY playing the love interest opposite BTS. They've even told American interviewers that they are dating all of ARMY, not any individuals.

I think a lot can get lost in translation, which is why there can be a multitude of different interpretations. I appreciate that they're being considerate while writing their lyrics, but at the same time I feel sorry that they have to be overly careful of how they phrase things. Personally, I would find nothing wrong with them addressing love songs to a girl (or guy) instead of ARMY. They're human after all.

Hi i'm a korean and here in this comment i was first noticed that it was translated that way in English. I didn't know it was translated that vague in English and i feel so sorry for that. I was kinda surprised it's translation was "do" because that part "do them" CAN actually sound offensive to some people, because the meaning of that word 'do' is not clear. However I can clearly say that it's not meant that way, and Korean version lyrics tell that. Words are more specific, and not controversial in Korean version lyrics, because it doesn't say 'do.' That part in Korean is "여자들은 방정식 우리 남자들은 해" which says we men are '해' '해' is a word for mathematics, and it means the 'answer/the final number'. So it means they solve the complex minds of the girls. "해" DOES have the meaning of 'do' too, but its not appropriate to translate this part of the lyrics that way, because if u say it means "do them," it doesn't fit the sentence there. Since there's no Objectives for that Verb 'do' and that's... kinda awkward. plus the context and meaning of the whole sentence is talking abt mathematics and Equations so what u said is true. It doesn't mean sexual way😂 I guess thats just the language..😅😅

Won Gi director of the MV “War of hormone” by BTS (2014) said that at that time the boys worked with a lot of determination and effort. His partner Jung Hon contributed an anecdote that reveals Kim Taehyung's creative spirit. “V made me a request. 'Director, I'm going to start with a lollipop in my mouth and then throw it on the floor. Please record it well '... but I couldn't capture it well. The candy even broke. I'm sorry, ”he lamented.

I personally don’t find the lyrics offensive as I agree they are expressing the struggles of dealing with hormonal changes in adolescence, and I’m sorry but sexual attraction is the number one pressing issue in most hormonal teens regardless of gender. There’s a couple of issues I take with people who found this offensive. First, the double standard. You can’t tell me young women were purely innocent in their thoughts and feelings as they watched these young men dance and sing, they just didn’t make a song about it, at least not publicly. Secondly, the entire concept BigHit wanted from BTS is a representation of the youth culture and the issues youth deal with as seen and heard through the lyrics and music of BTS, and of course everyone has or will experience sexual attraction. Yes, they refer to see through clothing and high heels etc, but I’ve seen hundreds of posts referring to JK’s abs, Jimin’s body rolls and shoulder “accidents” Tae’s tongue...you get the idea, and while many comments aren’t necessarily teens it’s not a problem. There can only be an issue if the lyrics were implying that I’m only attracted to girls who wear heels and sheer clothing, not sneakers and sweats. Anyone who has experienced adolescence knows however that if they’re sexually attracted to someone the person could easily walk around in a potato sack and an adolescent would still be entranced. Enjoyed your reaction, you’re quite humorous, especially the bit about the thumb on RU-vid thing lol!

Great reaction and review as always. The song is definitely playful and I feel self-aware and self-deprecating too. Very overt for BTS standards but compared to the music industry as a whole, nothing controversial. RM did apologize though. And since then, does have BTS’ lyrics checked for any offensive material. I don’t think it’s offensive but RM is a true leader and apologized anyway. Other than all that, the song is super catchy and fun, and the video is BTS gold with so many standout moments and expressions. 💜

Don’t be serious with lyrics. It is about a story of ordinary male teenagers who don’t have much dating experience but have a innocent fantasy about a girl. As a man, I don’t find any sexuality of this lyrics and offend any female. And also consider their age when releasing this album. They were too young to talk about universal love or epic story line.

Take this as coming from someone almost in their 40’s. But i think this was just candid snapshot of how someone young and inexperienced would think how picking up or impressing girls was. We’ve all been there in that cringe and awkward didn’t know any better stage but thought we were the bomb. You might also see it more clearly how innocent and adorable that hug with the girl at the end when you see one of the very limited female interactions that they had in “American hustle life” which was shot sometime around this mv as well. They look more like scared of them than most anything really 😆

Love your reaction to this! I feel the same way...it’s a very honest song in portraying guys inner thoughts and struggles at that age and probably the ever present influence of toxic masculinity that’s in media. I like that they did this early in their career so we can see their growth and maturity as people. I also understand why this created lots of negative buzz at the time. Watching this in real time it can make people wonder if this is the direction they would go. Looking back on it it’s easier to take since we know that they didn’t continue with this type of objectification of women in most of their work. I also like how you reacted to their facial expressions...it’s obvious to me that this was more like them role playing...imagining how it would be to act this way but they really can’t take themselves seriously!

For me I like the song, it’s cute, yes whenever I read the lyrics I shiver a lil, but I also remember that back then they were rookies, they didn’t know. They just followed their influences, which has harsher lyrics. And they listened to their company as well. Obviously now they have their own voice but back then, they were new to the game. this song is very much like “to each their own” type of song. It really does not represent what BTS stands for now, like at all, but watching it is cute to remind us where they came from, where they started, and how far they have grown.

every time i watch this video, i honestly just laugh. like the only reason they got in such trouble for it was because as idols, their every move is scrutinized. but like you said, compared to most western music, this is so mild. it’s got questionable lyrics but it’s about teenage boys who are not mature and not really that bright, let’s be honest, and are still developing. but have you met a teenage boy? they encapsulated that phenomenon and feeling of being a teenage boy in puberty perfectly. they’ve clearly grown and this is just a piece of their history that’s just super entertaining to see after seeing them grow and become intelligent men with depth.

They were really young back then, and were about that age where they opened their eyes to girls. Some of the lyrics, such as women are the best gift, can sound a bit inappropriate or even sexist (they were criticized heavily back then in Korea for writing somewhat sexist lyrics) but they were at that age where they were exploring their sexual desires. I think the lyrics are honest and cute considering their age back then rather than offensive. Young boys of that age are all going through that stage.

I would still love to hear music about BTS' personal romantic growth throughout the years. That's a part of their journey too and I think it's a waste that they can't share what they have experienced and have felt, when we do expect them to teach us about "love". I think as a collective, we should make that more of a safe topic for the guys to talk about without them having to give any details. Kind of like war of hormone, but in 2021 with their twenty-something perspectives and experiences. It would be so helpful and interesting, like everything else they do honestly. Scenes of holding the girl down and aggressively closing the locker. But.. It has to be in tune with the lyrics. Then, I don't feen any violence. Only lack of skills in dealing with first love. BTS, as for me, always try to care for feelings and good understanding. For 5 years being Their ARMY, I probably listened to all songs, many times. Neither offended or disgusted me. They always give me a lot of positive emotions. So... Watch and listen too 21st Century Girls. Live Comeback BTS:) I think, You will like it. See You soon:)

i also think that lyrics are open to interpretation, and maybe some of them are lost in translation. and when i compare them to the things that my straight male friends said when we were teenagers, these feelings are really compatible with the lyrics. to be honest, lyrics of this song are even milder lol. so i don't find this song offensive as a woman, for i think they reflect a straight teenager boy's feelings and thoughts. on the other hand, i also understand the ones that are offended by the lyrics.

I personally have no issues with the song; the concept frankly addresses hormonal drive which is a reality at some point for most people, male AND female. The main problem with people taking offense is the double standard here: it's fine when Western artists swear or talk about drugs and sex in every other song but when BTS, a group who covers SOCIETAL concepts and issues, addresses a mildly sexual fact of life as just that, there are complaints. YES. Your interpretation of the "equations" line is exactly what I've always thought; any other interpretation doesn't really make sense with the rest of the song. Same for the "presents" verse. Personally, especially with the benefit of hindsight and greater context about them, the butts is just that certain level of cheekiness you see with BTS. The entire song can be explained as teenage boys. Of course, the people who take genuine offense are valid. BUT for someone new coming into this I think it's important to understand the context and reasoning. After that, it leaves you free to appreciate everything else about the song. The song is catchy as HELL. Also, Baby BTS! Their sound was different but they also look so smol (especially Jungkook in this, dear lord-). Now that you've listened to this, you can check out the Dance Practices! (Dance Practice, Real WAR ver., and Halloween) All that being said, there was an apology, and we did get 21st Century Girl, which is an absolute bop and must-listen.

honestly, I think they meant "present" as more like a "blessing". Like... a blessing to the world in general. That's what I gathered from watching it. But this is my personal opinion. When going through that stage in life, everyone has those feelings and sometimes it can be taken the wrong way. Everyone's awkward at that stage and they represented that well in the song.

YESSS I completly agree with you!! I thought the same when i saw it for the first time and i think the same now. I was expecting so much worse. There's definitely some particular lyrics that are kinda... questionable? lol and i wonder if there's anything that got lost in translation and made it sound worse? or the other way around, even! But also, like you said, it's great that they took the criticism and grew from it. TBH It's such a fun song, it's one of my faves hahaha.

BTS have had suggestive lyrics... Converse High, cypher 3 killer to name a few.. Pied Piper is also a very very seductive song...with lyrics like 'i'm here to save you , I'm here to ruin you' BTS have their moments..they are men. They have shown growth and maturity in their songs like Boy In Luv -> Boy With Luv. Boy in luv's Korean title means Manly Man and Boy with Luv Korean's title is 'A poem for small things'. You can see their maturity and understanding of the world.

I think the title says it all. They add backlash at the time, they took it into account and change rapidly. Their lyrics are very gender neutral, never using specific terms like "she" or "he" when writing lyrics even in love songs. They became socially conscious in their expression. Personally, I like the old songs a lot. Musically, they're catchy and energetic and the dance practices for the old material are just phenomenal.

definitely check out 21st century girls, it was like an apology when they found out some people interpreted the lyrics as offensive. honestly bts were receiving so much hate back then anyway that twisting their lyrics was probably just another way of trying to tear them down when the lyrics could be seen as slightly controversial. anyways, they apologized for it like the men they are. i think rm got more pressure after this, he said he now gets a female rights professional or something to check the lyrics after this.

By the way, you have to think that Korea in some topics is still behind our part of the world, and in those years even more... So it needs context to understand many things in Korea around that time (in that time probably for them was something normal, lke 10-15 years ago for us many things were "normal" that today are not anymore) :)

Its cute and i love the beat and the groove to it, one of my top 10 from BTS and im 53 years old so we have to consider the age they were and experiences they were having.

Glad you didn't get offended. Honestly this is one of their most sexual songs and got alot of backlash over it cause Asian cultures in general are very different. I'll give some back story. RM felt bad about the accusations and the interpretations. so applogised and later on he said anything he writes now after he finishes, it's sent to experts to eliminate anything that could be interpreted as sexist or racist now that they are main stream (since 2015 - 2016). it shows that they were beginners and they wrote what they felt. They even changed korean lyrics for a song called Fake love which was performed in USA. cause the word "I" or "me" in korean sounds like the N word and they didn't want people to misunderstand. being considerate for other people cultures. I admire that. they even stopped their concert in saudi arabia when the prayer call (adane) started. I respect that. And I've been watching you since the very start and I kind of know that you are an open minded person who would appreciate this kind of acts. :)

War Of Hormones actually only really got backlash in 2016, a couple years after the song came out. It got backlash because BTS got popular in Korea and fans of other groups started nit-picking things. Then newer ARMY heard of it and started to run with it.

honestly, i've always considered this song to be more of a "character song" of channeling hormonal teenagers. Also, I heard someone analyze the "women are the equation" line as saying that women are on one side of the problem (equation) and men are on the other (answer/solvution) and therefore, men and women are equal or, you could see it as "equations and solutions go together" ...which is a very het thing to say, but altogether not problematic
