Small metal punch works well for me . Its a very cheap alternative. You can ground the tip by chucking it into drill and spinning it while using angle grinder to remove material .Just make sure its spinning in opposite directions .

Random factoid: The marlin fish was actually named after the marlinspike tool, and not the other way round. I def would've lost that bet. 'Marlin' was Dutch (maybe?), and refers to working with small ropes, and binding furled sails.

I bought the titanium & carbon fibre one a few months ago. I like the sharp tip but still have others with a smooth tip.

A nice spike, well made. I agree with you on the point, too sharp. I like a flat, blunt tip. That profile @ 5 " fits my hand and performs well. Thanks for the post.

Agreed. I blunt and flatten pointy tips. I have one “needle” spike for piercing cord.

Lowes sells a nice little marline spike ( $8 scratch awl) for some one just starting out. Maxam makes a nice marlinspike knife, about the same price. The spike is w-a-y too sharp for paracord. I personally have deep seated feelings about the Wichard stainless steel, drop forged, marine spike, bottle opener, shackle key multi tool. A work of art that caresses the hand, as it caresses paracord into beautiful gaucho style neckerchief slides. IMHO the finest marine spike at any price.

OK for one thing, that is a Fid, which is used for working with Line, not Rope. In the marine trade, anything under 2.5 inches is line. Except Manilla, all Manilla is either Rope or Cable. A Marlin Spike is used for working on Wire, and doesn't look like that Fid. I don't know why people want to call Line tools, Marlin Spikes, it has puzzled me for over 60 years. A Flick is the small tool for Line, that most folks ashore call a needle. A Needle is what we use to make and repair Nets with. None of this would mean anything but, you had to throw marine work in, and when you do that, the correct marine terms should be used. Excellent video, other than that.

@@nauticalknotcraft I'd be interested to see how Mr Jones ties a Marlinspike Hitch on wire. Also, I'd like to see him dragging a heavy load using a fid. But the title of your vid is pretty accurate, as this gidget is admittedly "not your average", etc. Every marlinspikes i've ever seen was over 6" long, all were stainless steel, and had either a pommel or a shackle tool at the other end. Every hand fid I've seen is either hollow up to the handle or is fluted to allow passage of the bitter end. A useful feature! Bigger fids are usually solid wood. But you're absolutely right: for *these* crafting purposes, anyone's free to call it a knitting needle, if they like.

@@timapple6586 I don't know why you would want to try and tie a Marlin Spike Hitch with wire. Although you could do it easily enough with 7 or 9 strand Troll Wire. Why ever would you want to yard a heavy load with a Fid? I like the new Fids with the channel for the Bitter end also. The only drawback to them, is they get pretty bent up and have to be straightened after a few shots of gear. When you have a 1000 Dungeness pots, with at least 2 shots of line, plus trailers, to get through, they are really handy. They're too small to use on King Crab gear though. By the way, if you wish to be formal, it is Capt. Jones. Feel free to call my First Johnny Mr., if you like. ;-) Please just call me Kirk. The crew has plenty of other names for me but, lets not go there.

I honestly though this thing was one of those rock spikes that are essential to the safety of mountain climbers. I never would've guessed it was a go-to tool for sailors

Has anyone ever tried throwing those? At a target? Titanium is probably near indestructible and the paracord at the end should work like a stabilizer...

Titanium is about as strong as steel for half the weight, so not as good for throwing knives.

If it's abrasive enough for sharpening, it'll grab your rope when you try to pierce it. There's a reason why these tend to be polished. There are already tapered diamond knife sharpeners for sharpening knives with serrations, if you're really committed to this idea, but they'd make terrible marlin spikes.

@@wanderingcalamity360 obiviously, but the coating would only be near lower 2/3 of the spike. Your not sawing the knot when with the spike. Modern man made HMPE fibers if used in ropes, cordage, and single strand construction such as bowstrings, are highly abrasive resistant! Try cutting a dyneema, or spectra fiber with common scissors. I'm of a minimalist mindset, less is better, so the dual use spike. It would work, I'm sure of it! Have a great day! Steve

That's the Rexford R.U.T. or Rexford Utility Tool. It's a pocket multi tool that holds a razor and it's also a bottle opener, pry bar, and bit driver.
