Nice upgrade job, 100 ampere suppy for that panelboard does seem too small, but interesting a school is adding load when many are trying to shed load to save money, A better specification i've inherited from working for the borough engineers, is protective conductor within the cable rather than separate, 5core is more expensive, but it is neater and less susceptible to damage.

Very good comment, the original supply was tiny (100a) exactly down to what you have said. The school in question…. id have to remortgage my house to get my child into

Funny we have 400A service (only single phase) here in the US to our house. We had to run 600MCM (300mm2) for the L1&L2 supply cables and 500MCM (240mm2) for the neutral cable. While its not armored cable, its all in conduit for long runs underground out to the pad mounted transformer by the street. Keep up the good work sir! 😁👍

Always a pleasure to hear from electricians from across the pond, i admire the strong conduit usage for cable containment in the US as it requires allot more craftsmanship, the British only use conduit for retro cafes and heavy industry these days.
@Chris_In_Texas
@Chris_In_Texas 2 года назад
@@maydayelectricalsolutionsl7601 Yes and in certain areas like in Chicago area, they require metal conduit for all wiring in residential houses etc. I am so glad thats not required where I am at. I would hate to have to run and bend all that conduit in every house to every light and socket. Also having mostly wood stick framed houses its much easier to run cables than having to deal with doing everything in stone and brick like you guys have to deal with in that setting. 🤦‍♂

Did a similar install 400amp upgrade, trench from road , guy made off cable in the rain while sitting on another high voltage cable ! Long story short brought new cable up offset to my 400 amp iso and trunking , got over it but what a nuisance.

More along the lines of Residual Current I'd say, they do plenty of industrial work with cable sizes I don't even touch in my worst nightmares 😀 Although technically qualified as a spark I'm more or less a DIYer (i.e. I don't work as a spark, just do my own work) and the biggest cable I've ever worked with was 16 mm2 coarse stranded and 10 mm2 solid. Both tiny compared to this! Living on the more frugal side of 3-phase territory, the largest supply the average domestic spark has to work on is 35 amps per phase and usually 10 mm2. Riser mains in apartment buildings do go up to 35 mm2 but I've managed to avoid that so far. The Germans go up to 63 amps per phase in domestic but are more adventurous in cable rating, so they don't go beyond 16 mm2 either. Austria is very conservative in terms of overcurrent protection when fuses are involved (as opposed to MCBs) and DNOs are even more so. Our DNO will only allow up to 50 amps on a 16 mm2 supply (three-phase, reference method B1 or B2).

@Darkonon 2 года назад
Just stumbled accross your videos, proper good content mate. The flashing colours in the montage is a bit much for me but other than that top job, just curious whats it got to do with the DNO what cable you use? Up my way once they have supplied the service head or MCCB/Switch disconnector then they don't care what you do after that?
@maydayelectricalsolutionsl7601
@maydayelectricalsolutionsl7601 2 года назад
Hello Gareth, the DNO are visiting to remove the old 100a supply and dig up the road to tap into the ring of mains from the street for a new 200a loop off into a new service cut out to be installed below the trunking We installed. Because it’s an operating school the new 95mm thermosetting swa supply set has been run in parallel to the old 25mm 100a supply, we would need to be present when UKPN do the switch over on their end so we can switch the cabling on the MCCB and remove the old earthing cable from the MET. Thank you for the feedback

What those grips you using to make off the gland? I use knipex cobra on the smaller ones but they look similar i normally make off with larger grips but as you know it scratches the gland.

Are you then relying on the DNO fuses to protect your cable?

@@maydayelectricalsolutionsl7601 Short-circuit and fault protection will have to be provided by the DNO fuses though as your MCCB is downstream of the armoured.
