Widely hailed as the greatest Monday Night Football game of all time this classic battle deep in the heart of Texas features one of the greatest single game performances in football history. A 4 touchdown 199 yard rushing effort by The Oilers' dynamic rookie running back Earl Campbell who seemingly nearly set the Astrodome's artificial turf ablaze with his cleats in the process. But the Dolphins wouldn't merely concede the game, countering with a epic 23-for-33, 349 yard outing by their legendary QB Bob Griese.

I love how Cosell was so knowledgeable about every player whether they were a start or nonstop. He made every player seem like a star

very astute observation. It mattered to him, the old blowhard. Miss Howie very much.
@spryfolII
@spryfolII 5 лет назад
Cosell was the first "Hype" man. But, what makes him the best was his knowledge and relatability with the players. The players had a lot of respect for Cosell and realized his hype helps the game and helped make stars out of guys we didn't really know. If Monday Night Football came to your town, it was BIG and it was BIG because Cosell made it BIG! Howard was for the "novice" fan that needed a reason to watch. If Cosell wasn't in the booth in1970, Monday Night Football probably wouldn't have made it.
@bernieudo4399

Most cogent observation. Howard really did take his job seriously. As an attorney it would be expected that you knew the facts & law to effectively assist a client. To not come prepared to Court would be pure negligence. Howard came to each broadcast fully prepared. He had to. He knew he "didn't play the game," so he had to earn both the players, owners, & public's respect. Some hated him because they felt this blow hard didn't belong, but most accepted him & respected him because he took the game seriously. That's why I enjoy watching these MNF games. This was football at its best. Hard hitting. No excuses. No stoppage of game action.

It just seems to me the game was played with heart back then, todays player seems to just go through the motion, i guess the money out weigh,s the heart today
@tomservo75
@tomservo75 Год назад
And Cosell was a play-by-play man. His display of knowledge was the precursor to John Madden. There is a difference with announcers today. They are not as knowledgeable about the game, don't bother to explain things as much (or can't), and the sideline reporter is some Barbie Doll just repeating what the coach told her, instead of having some insight into what's happening on the field.

Thank you for the upload. Love all football games from the 70's, especially MNF. Sorry to hear about your trouble with the No Fun League. They don't even broadcast any of these games ever and even now when they had a big announcement about that they are posting 96 "Classic" NFL games starting in August, a vast majority of them are more recent games that aren't really classic. These games bring back great memories of staying up late when I was a kid to get my football fix. I was born in 65, so all these games from the 70's take me back. Thank you again!!!

The more of these old games that show up here, the closer they drive me to tears--happy ones that is. I can never get enough of these games. I was never against Tennessee getting a franchise but they should have left the Oilers in Houston. Sure they did have some disastrous 1-13 seasons but they were loved to no end. The NFL Nazis are beyond human trying to withhold these from the public. GRRRRR!!!

You gotta love Howard-the cadence of his voice, really picks everything up. I loved it when the crowd was going crazy, and he chimes in with, "listen? they're playing the song" (oiler fight song)-classic line. In '78 I purchased two authentic NFL football jerseys-they both were active in this game. Nat Moore-I had the home Dolphin jersey, and I had the Pastorini home Oiler jersey. Hell of a coincidence to be watching this on RU-vid in 2018, and see both players (and teams) of the only two authentic NFL football jerseys I ever had in my life. By the way, this was Thanksgiving week, it culminated for me with my getting married five days later on Saturday, Nov. 25th. On T-Giving, at 23, we gathered to play our annual Turkey Bowl game (tackle). Two years later, playing in the Turkey Bowl, I tear my right ACL-what was I thinking right?
@CollectionTHX1138
@CollectionTHX1138 4 года назад
I loved when Howard called him Dante Pastorini An irony is the guy who wrote the excellent Oilers fight song wrote it for the Dolphins first. He tried to cash in on it so he did one for the Oilers at a slower tempo but essentially the same song.

Growing up a typical kid in Houston, I was able to go see the Oilers play on 2 or 3 occasions. This game happened to be one of those games. My dad and I and two other friends had the time of our life watching this game but my dad ALWAYS said he wished he could have heard Howard Cossel call this game. For almost 40 years now, he has asked me about how to find this game on the "internet". Well, today... Thanks to you Bran Stark.... I've found it. It would be cool to at least see the Texans play one game in the Astrodome in old style Oilers uniforms. It probably would never happen due to the expense of renovating the dome for just one game as well as installing turf but the dome is just sitting there picking up dust; you might as well use it.

These teams played in a rematch in the first AFC wild card playoff game, on Christmas Eve in the Orange Bowl. It was a dud compared to this Monday Night classic. The Oilers dominated and won 17-9, in the only playoff meeting ever between the teams. Houston would go to two straight AFC championship games, losing both at Pittsburgh. Miami didn't return to the AFC championship until winning it in 1982 and 1984 -- their last two Super Bowl appearances, both losses.

Has anybody caught a fight that broke on the stands during this game? Only asking because my grandfather went to this game and knocked some guy out for blowing too much smoke from his cigar because it was bothering my grandmother. It eventually escalated to a big brawl between my grandfather and his friends and the cigar guys friends. I’ve heard because of this incident it was the only NFL game that had to stop due to fighting in the stands. Please let me know if you heard of this or seen it in this game. Probably the most famous MNF game ever played. Houston was coming on strong. Miami veteran, smart, well coached. Their window was slowly closing with a aging QB, suspect defense, and adjusting slow to the major offensive rule changes. The Dolphins still won games, and had a dogfight with the Patriots just to make the playoffs. Houston had been close to reaching the upper level of the AFC, but got short circuited in '77, but that allowed the draft position for Earl Campbell. Once Campbell put on the Colombia Blue, it was ON n POPPIN'! After this "classic" they met a few weeks later in the Wild Card Game. Miami had a real chance to go to Super Bowl XIII in the Orange Bowl. The Oilers, with their "traveling" stout defense held the Dolphins down and won. Then went to New England and knocked out the Pats. We all know what happened in Pittsburgh, but the '78 Oilers were one of the most exciting teams in the era. If the Steelers would have slipped up, the Oilers could have got 'em, and maybe a Lombardi Trophy. As for this game. The NFL at its very best! Both teams playing at a high level, the crowd was "fantastic". Even with the volume turned down, it was still LOUD! Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell (no Dandy Don that night) were at their professional best. I was 10 and I was so hyped before and after this game. I stayed up all night talking to my younger brother. We fell in love with Earl Campbell that night. We didn't know much about the Houston Oilers. They weren't featured in Baltimore much, but after that game we started to see them all the time. It may have been the schedule, but we used to get Steelers, Redskins, and Eagles. But, someone I guess said that team in Houston needs some East Coast love. Hahaha Thank You for posting the "Signature" game of the Monday Night Football series.

I was with my parents and kid brother in Houston this same evening, as we took the early part of Thanksgiving week(schools in the South were out all week, as opposed to just Thursday and Friday here in the Northeast) to visit with my uncle and his family in Houston. We went to a mall somewhere in the northwestern suburbs, and ate at a Picadilly that night; as we were walking through the mall a bit, I saw Erik Estrada on a CBS musical special on one of the TV sets from one of the TV stores. Even in SW Louisiana, we often heard of the Oilers' exploits; I think my Dad, when we got back to the hotel room, was watching this game on Channel 13.
