love the intro, love the atmosphere, love the history lessons by Cosell, love the aged Snake Kenny Stabler with Earl Campbell. In 1980, I started to watch MNF and remember the games, always heard the both was lively during the '70s and so glad I got to hear Cosell, Dandy Don Meredith, and since '71 Frank Gifford. Well, we have the 20th Century NFL, it was not perfect but its was so much better than the shat we have seen since at least 2001 and especially since Goodell came in in '05

You have to think that if they could have just gotten an average QB, a "game manager," they might have been able to get over the hump. I wish they had kept Pastorini. Stabler was horrible. And, their offensive game plan was sooooo lacking in imagination. That's why Bum got fired.

Indeed. This was the Browns' worst start since 1975, when they began 0-9 and ended 3-11. They'd had fast starts the previous three years, but faded at the end. The opposite happened in 1980. The key was a comeback win over the Steelers in week 8. The Steelers had beaten the Browns 6 straight times and 11 of the previous 12, and ran up a 26-14 lead before the Browns rallied to win 27-26. That put the Browns 1 game ahead of the Steelers. Pittsburgh evened up the race when they won the rematch 3 weeks later, but the Browns lost only one game after that (on a Hail Mary at Minnesota).

Bum deserved to get canned after the way the Oilers finished in 1980. This same team came into Houston and took the division from us. The 1980 Oilers had a tendency of playing down to the weaker teams. Just look at the losses in 1980.

I know 1980 NFL was a different game but Cleveland accepting the penalty and not taking that interception at their own 2 yard line in hopes of getting better field position was a horrendous decision. Of course they roughed Stabler on the next play and Houston put it out of reach with a FG. So much fun to watch Campbell play. Miss these days

Recalls a good era, at least, for me. Good era for the NFL and for the fans. Those teams played like gangbusters. And, the atmosphere of that place - the turf, the lighting, old, old stadium, the boistrous crowd, the play-by-play and color commentary - just very genuine and down to earth, compared to the media circus it later became. And snazzy orange uniforms for the Browns. I liked the Oilers' silver helmets from long back (1970, 1971).

As a life long Houstonian, 1980 would mark the end of the "Luv Ya Blue" era as Bum Phillips would be fired after the season & the team would enter a 7 year playoff drought. The Oilers (RIP) would finish 11-5 but have to settle for the wildcard as, surprisingly, the Browns would win the division that year. The Oilers would lose to the eventual Super Bowl champion Oakland Raiders in the playoffs as would the Browns (any Browns' fans remember "red-right-88'?). Btw, 1980 would also mark the height of Earl Campbell's career as he would win his 3rd straight & final NFL rushing title by rushing for a career high 1,934 yards including 3 200 yard games that season. Given that he sat out the 2nd half of this game & still had over 100 yards rushing he might have gone over the 2000 yard mark for the season had he played the whole game.

Impressive watching Stabler the magician, looks like a statue, but still moves his pegs enough and he gets ball out quickly with sidearm sling. He may have retired before kosar started with browns, but would like to see the 2 of them play head-to-head in their primes-the battle of the unorthodox QBs. The Oilers dominated the 3rd quarter, so hoping to see brian Sipe work some magic in the 4th. This was Sipe’s MVP season, as he had an incredible year. Ended sadly with loss to Raiders in playoffs. Update: no Sipe magic from the Kardiac Kids-Oilers just dominated this game at the line. Browns hardly had the ball in 2nd half.
