2019 Wimbledon men’s champion Novak Djokovic speaks with ESPN’s Chris McKendry and Brad Gilbert after his win in the final over Roger Federer. Djokovic reflects on his dominant performance in Grand Slams since he lifted the Wimbledon Trophy 12 months ago and how he saw out a tough last set to defeat Federer in the tournament’s first fifth-set tiebreaker in a men’s singles final. Djokovic credits the support of his family and team as the reason he can keep competing at the highest level and hopes that he can emulate Federer’s success in the late stages of his career.

Oh come on idiot, luck is a factor in any kind of success but saying that Fed lost it means Fed didn't give best efforts to close the match? Please, this is the final on his favorite surface and one point would've given him the 9th Wimbledon crown. And what's wrong with luck being a factor there? You throw your fortune away? Using your same dumbass logic Federer would've lost 6-3 in the final set. Also it was Djokovic who was leading the match, winning each set before Federer won the other sets to make it even. Any win is a win no matter how tight or surprising it can be - there weren't even any controversial calls or any weird behavior going on in here either. If Federer knew the tie-break in 5th set would be very bad why would he allow Novak to drag it to the tiebreak? He got a couple breakpoints and did break Novak's service games 5 times in the match, but he couldn't do it when it mattered the most. And in matches like this, the one who performed during the key moments better was the winner, and deserved to win. @The Knight This is true. Both Fed and Nadal each won 3 during that period. Djokovic easily would have won 3 of the 6 and would already be in the lead. It was a gift. He never fully explains what happened on top of the injury but I suspect for whatever reason he went into a deep depression that took a year to come out of.

@LDBC Facts The question to ask is how many titles would Fed have if Nadal and Djokovic were 5 years OLDER? If that were the case I suspect he wouldn't even be in the GOAT discussion. Great talent, no guts.

What an epic men’s final. I’ve been watching Wimbledon for many years now and I think that was the most intense final I’ve ever witnessed - even surpassing the great Federer Nadal final in 2008 in my opinion. The longest Wimbledon final in history and an outstanding performance from both competitors. Roger Federer, one month shy of his 38th birthday, took it to Novak Djokovic and had him on the ropes; a man six years his junior and the world’s number one tennis player. He dominated the match on the whole; served the most aces; hit the most winners; played the better quality tennis, but, unfortunately, when the points mattered most, he faltered. The tennis world; the bookmakers, did not believe that Federer, at almost 38 years of age, had it in him to go the distance and maintain such a high level of tennis. They did not believe that he would beat Nadal in the semi final, but he did, and not only did he defeat him, but defeated him in emphatic fashion. A masterclass. They did not believe that he could go five sets with Novak Djokovic (Tim Henman, in particular, did not believe he could come back after being 2 - 1 down in sets). Well, not only did he come back, he had two championship points and almost won! After the match Federer even stated that he felt fine. Almost 38 years of age, the longest men’s Wimbledon final in history, and he feels fine. This man really is something special. I really feel for Roger Federer. In my opinion, he should have won. Two championship points and I think it is widely regarded that he did play the better quality tennis on the whole. It’s just a shame he couldn’t get those crucial points. Hats off to Novak Djokovic though who had to deal with such a one sided crowd toward Roger Federer. Djokovic showed such tough mental strength against such strong opposition. Crowd against him, two championship points to deal with, and he held his nerve and refused to give in. Very admirable performance. He was also very respectful at the end of the match toward Roger Federer, mentioning that Federer is one of the greatest of all time and that he inspires him because of the longevity he has shown in his tennis career. He could have been bitter because of the hostility of the crowd towards him and their love for Roger but he was gracious and behaved in such a professional manner. As Rafael Nadal is the king of clay, and Novak Djokovic the king of the hard court; Roger Federer is the greatest men’s grass court player the world has ever known; racking up a record 8 Wimbledon grand slams. Let’s all be thankful that we lived in the era of these absolute tennis legends!

Never let up Novak, there are always Tennis Worlds to be conquered! Leave behind a legacy that no one can overturn! Always be as fierce as you can? You let-up the attack sometimes, and seem to get energized when your back is against the wall, but always win each point as if it was the only Crumb of food on the table that everybody is going after? IMO, the reason you won the 2019 Wimbleton is that Federer was always under pressure, and it finally got to him? He played a great game throughout the match, and was in peak form throughout! Novak, you seemed lackluster, almost as if this match didn't mean much to you as TV coverage began and seemed to show, but don't always be the "Come from Behind Man" and go for the "Juggler" every time you hit the Ball? You did a great job of keeping the pressure on this time, and Federer must've felt it, much more than you did? But being the true Champion he is, he withstood the onslaught most of the time, and fought back with the big heart he has! I felt that you would have eventually been overwhelmed and broken down by his awesome attacks? That negative look you had in your eyes made me think that way! I thought midway through the match that you had no chance in Heaven you were going to win, and almost turned to another station, that is until I heard the results from another sports network! But, like the Champ you are, you turned it on during the final set! It was almost like you were another person by the look in your eyes! I then said, this is going to be very interesting and watched until the end! Both Great guys and Humble! I was struck by the hostility in the Audience, and couldn't understand why? I guess to some of them, you were, and will always be, the greatest Champ ever, so they were upset that this guy from a third word type Country would come in to beat their favorite? IMO only..

Roger is still GOAT to me having the most GS titles. But nadal and djoker are hot on his heels. I feel like fed needs them more at this point to keep his lead being he's somewhat older than novak and more out of his prime. And the you have nadal who i assume will still win the french every year for the foreseeable future, until i see otherwise. Fed has to pick up a title here and there or he will be caught and passed soon within the next couple years.

If you look at the stats, Djokovic had no right to be playing for five sets. Tennis is usually a game of percentages. If you get your percentage, hit your first serve, win more points and you win the game, but not yesterday. Djokovic hanged in there even if he wasn’t playing particularly well and he took his chances. His mental strength and ability to raise his game in the critical points were the difference

So many are saying federer played better overall. There’s only one thing that counts in any game. And that is winning. Pure and simple Novak’s play was affected by the disgusting crowd. But the mark of the man was to overcome that. This is what makes this man the greatest tennis player ever
@votdfak

Novak handed over sets 2 and 4 without a fight. He lost five service games in those two sets. He had 4-2 lead in fifth, he should've closed the match without all this drama. It's sweeter now, but he said it best, he should've closed it.
@jackl3608
@jackl3608 5 лет назад
I actually think Novak played a bad game (or Federer was surprisingly spot on for his tactics). I came to expect Federer to dominate the game with winners after winners but also plenty of errors, like he did in their previous Wimbledon final. Federer were really good in the first few sets; it was rather amazing how Novak could be 2-1 without even having a break point. Not many people could do that to Novak and even fewer could lead 2-1 under this adverse situation. In the end, it was the smallest of margins. Novak did what he does best - hang in there and take his chances. So clinical. But yeah if you look at the stats, Federer should have won... bit like in football when one team had 30 shots on target and still lose 1-0 to a Mourinho’s team who maybe had just a couple shots on target. The two championship points that he saved showed that he is a man who won’t be fazed by the situation... it takes a lot to even attempt those shots. Up until that moment, Federer looked imperious. As for the fans, wait for the US open. At least here at Wimbledon people won’t try to interrupt and heckle players.
