Murray was a very good hardcourt player. People forget. He used to beat Federer a lot and lead their head to head for most of their careers. I always felt a bit sorry for Andy’s many losses at the Australian Open. He deserved one title. His backhand was one of the best on tour. I always felt his forehand wasn’t as strong and his second serve was poor.

Murray has great hands at the net also. His volley is fantastic. As is his block backhand service return, taking time away from the server. Iron will, and a never say die attitude, and a very very high tennis IQ, great shot selection etc. Plenty to discuss!

Murray has been plagued by injuries that is the only reason there isnt “the great four”, but just “the great three”.
@ben4190
@ben4190 Год назад
Wouldn't say plagued, just one absolutely horrendous injury. He's been relatively injury free, other than the occasional niggle, up until that point. It was always the big 4, it was always Murray, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer reaching the semi finals/ finals of tournaments for years.

@ben4190 10 месяцев назад
@@Revolver1981 The back surgery was very minor and barely if at all inhibited him afterwards. It was literally they just shaved a tiny bit of bone off a vertebrae. His wrist problems were very early on in his career, and were caused by putting too much weight in his racquet which was again easily solved.
@Revolver1981
@Revolver1981 10 месяцев назад
@@ben4190 No actually it inhibited him for about a year. He wasn't the same player afterwards. He didn't win another title for nearly a year and that's when Djokovic got a lot of wins against him. He's also had problems with his knees throughout his life.
@ben4190
@ben4190 10 месяцев назад
@@Revolver1981 Wasn't the same player afterwards? Good! Because that not the same player went on to win many more titles, GS's and be No.1, but that's besides the point. Which player hasn't had tough times? Djokovic had his elbow, and other weird stuff no one really understands, Federer also had bad knees which ultimately ended his career. Nadal also has had knee issues which have actually stopped him playing where as Murray it hasn't, let alone Nadals foot, that's what I call being plagued with injury. saying Murray was plagued with injury his entire career is completely unfair and untrue which is the point I'm making. By the way, his knees are a symptom of when he was born, the knee joint bones were fused together, and it's actually hardly effected him, I wouldn't even call it an injury.

He has to have been part of the big 4 in that era winning 14 Masters titles, a few more than Sampras did, Olympic records, single-handedly winning the Davis Cup for the UK as the other 3 had world class players in their teams but we had 1 wc dbls player in.....yes, Murrays brother Jamie. 11 Grand slam finals and he also won over 40 singles titles in that era. there are no other arguments against him being in there.
@dontstrawmanme
@dontstrawmanme Год назад
Whether you like it or not he was world no.1 many times and for a while he was considered apart of the big 4 in the Tennis media and wider community. For a long time, it was literally what they were called. After winning his first Wimbledon, he suffered a terrible hip injury and this is what derailed, or ended, his chances of properly competing against the big 3. So yeah, he was miles behind them after this. Nice analyses, a rock on the ground could have seen this. I hate ifs but if the injury doesn't occur it is clear Murray wins plenty more Slams. Its clear he competes in way more finals. Has a chance to maybe face players outside the big 3 a lot more in semi's and finals. I would say Novak had it easy when you look at Murrays dead hip and all Nadals issues. Its a body, genetic diff, not a talent diff. Its not even a debate that he would have won way more Slams without his hip dying. Saying he "isn't even close to the big 3" and that's its "disrespectful" to say so tells me you didn't even watch the massive semi finals and finals he was involved in against the 3 GOATs. Or his dominance of other players outside the big 3, 4 at that time. He would destroy guys in the top 20 just like the big 4 did.thats why he was always getting into semi finals and having to face one of the 3 God's. He probably wished they would just lose for once so he can get a Soderlinng or Tsonga in the final for a nice easy win. But no. He would face Rafa, Novak or Roger nearly every single time in these hige semi's and finals. But yeh, he was a million miles behind them but was miles ahead of everyone beneath him? That doesn't make sense. Yes, after his hip injury destroyed him, he cannot be regarded as being in a big 4 or even close to the big 3. At the best moment in his career he loses his hip obviously he falls behind, alot. You are categorically incorrect to suggest at no stage in his career he wasn't apart of a big 4. After his tough loses against the 3 GOATs when they speak of him afterwards that they appreciate him as one of their great rivals in the sport because they were always full of praise against him. When he lost to Roger at SW19 in 2013, Roger said Murray will win it one day. Did he say that about Bagdatis? Nope. Maybe go and watch some historical matches he was involved in against these guys and pay attention to how hard he pushes them over and over. Analyse Murray between 2012-2014 and remove his hip dying and ask what a peak Murray can do in the sport with a fully functioning hip after winning his first Wimbledon. Are you saying he can only win one more slam? Look what he did in the final vs someone who wasn't Rog, Rafa or DJ, he destroyed that guy in 2016 returning a serve of 147mph and winning the point. So he took his opponents biggest asset in a slam final and made it look weak and pathetic. This is precisely what the big 3: if not vs themselves they usually just destroyed the other guys. What other player outside the big 3 pushed them so hard during their careers? If Murray is no4 during these years, who beneath Murray can beat Novak and Roger in straight sets to win Wimbledon? Wawrinka? Why didn't he do it then?? And before you say Murray got home advantage, so did Tim Henman and every British player. And so did Federer like he got home advantage everywhere all the time. So who can beat these guys in 3 sets at Wimbledon beneath Murray during this era? Genuinely curious because if you can't answer then what this does is show there was a big 4 at one stage, there is not other way to define it when he's beating them with ease in major finals in straight sets when no1 else on the tour are even close to doing such things.
@gaskellr44
@gaskellr44 Год назад
@@dontstrawmanme I agree with everything you said regarding Murray having to be in the Big 4, due to all the reasons you have mentioned; GS Finals and wins, 2 Golds, 14 Masters titles, 1 ATP win, and over 45 tourn final wins. But 2 things you said I feel are wrong. He was only world number 1 for 1 period of time I think and not many, and although he had a hip issue in 2013, it didn't ultimately stop him from competing further down the line until after 2016, as we saw what happened to him at W'don qtrs against Q in 2017 losing last two sets 6-1, 6-1 which would never happen normally and yes, I think he would have won between 6 and 10 GS titles if he was fully fit.
