For me elimination of all the buttons - I love screens, air con are set once and never touch again. In bmw I set body comfort setting and auto seat heating and coolng ONCE and forget about it for 3 years until new bmw and lease. Do you really change these settings all the time, why?
@@spk8989plYou really think those big LCD screens are for not touching them? 😅 So, you set all up and let this useless ugliness be there and get dusty? Make sense 👍
The exterior is fine, but I'm not going to spend 80k on this interior. I'll go for the last ICE A6 gen at full spec for 70k with a beautiful wood/aluminum interior.

Was nice to see diesel under it but then you sad mild hybrid and red light turned in my head .My friend has BMW X5 3.0 diesel 2021 which should be bullet prof engine but because is mild hybrid is already dead and siting brick ,when they open engine camshaft had many nasty scars on it ,so it probably run many times with out enough oil pressure .Diesel and hybrid even start stop system dont mix good together
@@alparbiro5892 @alparbiro5892 That mild hybrid have 0 benefits but kills the engine over time and adds much complicity. And like i sad it gives 0 benefits ,my 2.0 diesel from 2016 consumes 0.5-0.6 l PER HOUR on idle so what is the catch .Maybe someone will say it adds torque off electric motor but diesels have already more then enough torque for anything (my 2.0 has 400 nm).First i did on my car when i bought it was to turn off Start/stop forever so never had problem with that car
After watching this a second time, the exterior is great, the interior is a total nightmare. Huge step back from current models. Piano black everywhere, screens everywhere, no button controls for climate system and the interface you demoed is a joke. And don’t get me started on the capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel and doors. The interior engineers seem to be more focused on cutting costs by removing physical buttons and less on the practical ergonomics Audi was once known for. I’d never buy this model. Will keep my S4 until I move over to the Porsche or another brand.
Even that sun shade for back window has cost saving ,it has only 1 point for attach, that would be broken by the wind on open windows easily ,my 8 year old car has 2 so it dont move with a wind
My friend bought Chines Geely ,for 3k euros extra from base model you get EVERYTHING ,big panorama roof that can open ,3D camera ,every electronic imagine ,and warranty is 7 years or 150k km ,most Germans give only 3 years in my country even they cost 3 times more
@@JohnGuidetti751 well, true, but from a consumer perspective I too compare other platforms and drivetrains with comparable prices. Open-minded consumer will never compare apples to apples within one company.
Thanx for the review. I had a chance to get into new A5 and I have to say that in real life it doesn’t feel premium. It’s sad that german car manufacturers competing nowadays in cost optimisation and screen sizes.
The interiors on these new Audis look so much like the new GM interiors, like the ones in the new Chevrolet Traverse and upcoming new Suburban. Very cheap imo.
They have to save money because they are stuck between a rock and a hard place, have to spend gazillions on developing Hybrid and EV powertrains alongside petrol and diesel, the company car market is shrinking and on top of the that type of cars most people can afford to lease are getting cancelled ( RIP Fiesta) to save development money.
I'd love to see more high-quality fabric or fabric-like materials being used. I know it's not animal-free, but something like the wool blend on Volvos would be amazing. Some high-quality fabric couches can cost upwards of €4000 ($4300), so they can definitely go quite premium. I would have to see what this Audi's fabric feels like, but it doesn't look the most premium from the camera. Leather/leatherette is so underrated. Most uncomfortable and bum-burning material ever made.
Thx for the video, I'm even more convinced that my A4 b9 avant V6 TDI with 272cv is the best option for the next 10 years.... And it's much better than that car, in terms of quality Audi is now closer to seat.
@@angmid9210 I love design of new BMW's. I personally lease M4 and my wife decided on M440i. The most beautiful cars money can buy now and technically perfect. Old BMW's are simply awful.
I've been driving German cars for 15 years (MB & Audi) and not sure I'm going to continue. Plastic parts failing, motor mounts, etc. at 55k miles and so on. The funny thing is that I was most worried about all of the tech and screens, but they've been fine. The mechanicals, less so.
@@akj2387 2018 A5 convertible purchased new and well maintained. My previous car was an MB E350 purchased new in 2012 that was a complete tank and no issues. No personal experience with the newer MB's.
Great car. The proportions, angles and lines are much nicer than those from BMW and Mercedes. However the badges used to be better, and too much glossy black in the interior.
Better than the competition, yes. Better than the previous models- certainly not. There was a timeless and subtle design style with the b8.5 and b9/9.5. But this just feels like it’s trying wayyyy too hard to be fancy with the lights and intakes and especially with the interior. My 2019 sq5 will be the last Audi for me unfortunately.
@@Johnny91832 LED DRL was an upgrade from most cars using halogen at the time. The matrix laser was again an upgrade from the xenon HID that the previous generations had been using. These new lights are not that. I feel like they are a tacky addition, especially the fact that they give you choices to change them from the infotainment. Am I mad at the headlights? No. Im mad at Audi for focusing their efforts on something so mundane and useless and could have used the design budget for something more significant. I personally don’t think the bar taillights are an improvement over the separated ones from previous models.
The Germans are now on the downpath when it comes to interior quality. Especially the materials are now not premium anymore. Best to see is the inside of the door pockets for example. Also the trunk is a joke. 450L and no space under the trunk floor….
Visually interior looks much more cheaper than in previous generation. Where is aluminium or wood inside? Just dark plastic everywhere. Now it looks absolutely equal to any cupra. Of course maybe built quality is better but still…very disappointed:(
It's strange, everyone seems to be complaining about the piano black and the screens, but very few are complaining about the looks. Fitting, because this thing is just beautiful. Especially in this color. If i had the money, I would buy it so quickly
Here is a feedback who used to own a Audi and currently owns a BMW.. I had 2023 Q3 till recently with all the tech package a Q3 can have and paid a lot more a Q3 should be priced.. Audi and BMW has subscriptions but Audi charges a lot but BMW rates are more affordable. Audi overall is an excellent car brand but to enjoy / feel one need to go for 4 or above series anything below feels like overpriced VW.. BMW on the other hand , though upfront expensive but perfect for people who loves driving .. and luxurious justifies the price tag!! Again I’m not an expert but just wanted to share POV..
Engines Northern American market (sedan only), slightly different: No MHEV A5 2.0 TFSI 268 hp 400 Nm quattro ultra Audi S5 3.0 TFSI 362 hp 550 Nm oldschool quattro 40:60
Actually I like fabric seats. They are really comfortable and feels like a cozy room when you get in car. However, that interiror looks bland. Especially when you consider those knock-off looking screens.
coming from an AUDI A3 2017 model and this AUDI A5 AVANT is going to be my next car (just business model though which is more than fine for rme). Grüß dich aus Polen.
If you opt-out passenger screen, you're left with big piano black slab. Very lazy design move. At least it's on their configurator. It could be just a render.
Great review Thomas. The A5 looks great in the white. I think we need you to revisit your A5 comparison to the A7 and see if you have changed your mind.
As a current owner of a 2023 A4 Avant I'm disappointed with the interior of this new A5 and the fact a list price starting over £40k = £600 road tax in the UK so I won't be replacing with this new model.
This looks better than the sedan inmo. BUT why do they have the "unibrown" rear lights? The car would be much better looking with just a light on each side :)
Please Audi on the facelift of this can you offer us a tilt and slide panoramic roof, some of us enjoy being able to have the sunroof open, while enjoying the summer air breeze on a lovely summers day. I actually love this car, and would buy it, I just can’t do a car without a sunroof that opens. I’m sure many others enjoy the pleasure of the sunroof, we don’t care about the increased drag.
I think this is the only segment where the german trio still has good looking cars, i mean Audi usually has good cars in all segments looks wise but bmw and merc been messin up lately
So many bad comments. Overall is a great car: great motor, great driving, suspension, steering, sound isolation... No physical buttons and gloss black are a minus, but far from offsetting the previous mentioned. Small trunk is a big con for me.
Since I suspected that the new A5 will have all these shortcomings like glossy plastics, cheap middle consol, only touch controls, capacitive BS and all these visible costcuttings because the car was planned on the peak of this nonsense in the VW Group (ID3, Golf 8), I decided to order the B9.5 in May allthough it also will have the touchscreen. Thats the bitter pill I have to take. But what makes me smile is that I get a car without all these things I would hate for the next 3 years. Maybe next week it`s time for the delivery.
Dieselgate is still very much a thing. I'm quite sad to see this reeks of cost-cutting, from the 1 or 2 piston super-cheap brake calipers, to the tacky panel controls both on the doors, stearing wheel and centerconsole, gear leaver, fabric choices. - Heck even the controls are the lumbar support on the seat are cheaper. With the B9 series they shared more parts with other Audis or even Porsches. Now it's the other way around, this B10 shares lot of parts with Skoda and VW. And the thing looks like Kia ProCeed in the front. - Actually the ProCeed looks better.
Why does the new A5 now have the same cheap carpet fitted like the lower end models have such as A1 and Q2 but not the high quality velour carpet that was fitted in the previous generation A4 & A5? No longer a premium high quality product it seems with penny pinching going on
Hello Thomas. Great video. Do you find new Audi screens big or with unusually big bezels? This is how I percieve them, while watching the video. They seem bigger than BMW and Merc.
The exterior styling is great, the interior looks modern, but the car is unnecessarily long, the huge middle console covered in piano black looks too heavy and will become dirty and scratched, and the co2 emissions without the mild hybrid system are too high, so is the price after adding some equipment.
As the exterior design of some Audi models is now also questionable, I find the A5 quite attractive. The same applies to the fabric parts and seats in the interior - I like them much more than leather or artificial leather. However, Audi completely loses me with the creepy controls and the incredibly cheap-looking piano black in the cockpit. Even if the A5 cost less than 30k, I'd still find it cheeky for that price. In my opinion, the weak sales figures are home-made and not a consequence of the current irritation over the drive issue. I don't care whether it's electric or diesel, but I won't buy a touch-only without full autopilot. That's just plain stupid.
The mirror adjustment unit looks and feels flimsy. The door handles are too unconventional. The interior is overloaded with screens and displays... It was as if the car had lost its face, but had not acquired a new one.
I really wish Audi and the others would stop wasting money on useless tat like screens for passengers and warning signs in LED taillights, and instead give us back real, clicky, tactile and easy-to-find-without-looking buttons and switches!
I currently drive the 2019 A5 Sportback and the built quality inside and out is second to none, pretty much perfect ✨ 100.000km just one small repair, no squeaking, no rattling, just silence in the cabin. Materials are very high quality, real Aluminium Inlays, real leather, and soft touch everywhere 🤍 What's the strategy here with making it worse than before? I don't get it @audi 🥺😢
The lack of separate heating controls puts me off. I'm surprised Audi decided to do this. An estate car is supposed to have the most practical load area, yet Audi has put a large lip at the opening of the boot, unforgiveable in an estate car. I definitely couldn't consider it as a replacement for my current estate car.
These big screens internally, I just prefer a minimal screen with most important info, a handful. The rest should be able to switch on/off. It’s like a christmas tree, especially when driving evening/night time
Was waiting for the A5 Avant PHEV to replace my company hybrid Passat - which itself replaced a diesel A4 Avant 4-years ago because of the lack of a PHEV. I can't understand why Audi are releasing the PHEV later when the technology is already within the VAG group. Plus the pathetic rear legroom has just confirmed that my Passat will be replaced with the new generaiton Passat, I don't think there is much difference to be honest.
I wasn't sure initially with some designs but actually they're really looking nice, and I've never had an Avant but I could go for the S5 Avant this time.
There is a reason why the prices of older cars in good condition with MOT TuV etc. are so firm - no hybrid , pref no turbo/downsizing engine ideally no direct injection, is the cheapest most reliable way of motoring you can get . Every new model review just reaffirms that fact , this one is no exception.
Another great, informative review! I own an Audi 2023 Q4 eTron. The major problem with Audi cars is that their software sucks. It is not well done and Audi cheaps out by not fixing issues and not doing updates to the software. I’ll not buy another Audi until Audi takes automotive software seriously. Mechanically and design wise Audi cars are fine, but the software and lack of proper support is a deal breaker for me.
I like this A5 estate better than the sedan much more practical for putting your stuff in the back and for all the family . I love German wagons especially the uberwagons , I don't know why Americans don't like estates they are so cool. Americans have this stupid SUV craze , I prefer estates . Thomas you are working so hard you are everywhere now with these reviews , you need a break my man . Anyway , Have a nice day Thomas .
Yes. The very reason there is talk of a crisis in the German car industry. They may be trying to fund the shift to electric but it’s disguised corporate greed.
@@johnsvensson6540There is not much greed imo... Don't get me wrong VW still makes ok money, but there is a lot of ineffiency. All these Audis still have a lot of incommon with the manufacturing architectures from the 90s.
sorry but interior is just garbage. You can barely find any design line that follows any other. and come on you dont have to make that screen inspired from single frame grill design. For passenger side screen, noone in this universe can put it there in a worse way.
Name of the game: cost reduction. That interior is not worth the money. It's sad when you think Audi had arguably the best interiors of the big 3 german brands. Old A4 was better
This material interior is looking like taken from new Skoda Octavia / Superb. I was waiting for this car, but after Your videos I'm more confused than convinced that I want to buy it. PS. According to online photos of version without 3rd screen - space for screen looks terible.
Nice video. Would be great if you can tell us what formats the usb port can take. many of us like playing our cd collection uncompressed (flac) in the car. Some car support that and its better than Spotify and cheaper when you already own your music.
I was waiting for reviews to decide if I am going to get S5 as my new daily driver. Now I don't know what to get anymore. This interior is a deal breaker.
