Valery Legasov briefly explains how a nuclear reactor works to Boris Shcherbina. The bullet refers to the fast neutrons release from the fission process of Uranium 235 where free radicals either hits DNA molecule directly or indirectly, resulting in damage. The fission cross section for Uranium 235 is high and the chance of fission is much higher when neutrons energy is low. A moderator is required to slow down (moderate) neutrons from the previous fission process. The graphite refers to the fragments from the explosion of the RBMK reactor which uses carbon as a neutron moderator.
This clip was taken from 2019 HBO miniseries, Chernobyl. I do not own any of the footage and all credit goes to HBO and their talented team.

Boris is working on several levels here. He knows he's going to be fed a load of steaming BS by the toadies on the ground once he lands. He needs enough information to be able to defeat that BS. He's also testing Legasov's convictions, whether he's an alarmist making a play for power or whether he's sincere. If he will give up his expertise easily, he's sincere. If he then has a little joke at Legasov's expense, that's all in good fun, and it's important to keep the experts a bit off balance if you don't want them taking over and making political mistakes, especially someone like Legasov who's already come across as knowledgeable, passionate, and a bit naive, and will need watching to keep him out of trouble with the Kremlin. Boris is a veteran politician, He already believes Legasov. But he also knows how Soviet politics works and knows his first job has to be prepared to know a little more than Brychanov and Fomin think he does, so he can quickly defeat them and move them aside, get real informatiuon for Gorbachev and assume power at Chernobyl so that Legasov can fix things That's why he immediately jumps in when Brychanov and Fomin try to stonewall Legasov, and then jumps right down their throats with his new knowledge. because he had used Legasov's briefing to be prepared for that moment. This scene demonstrates Boris's extreme intelligence and forward thinking.

I read this and rewatched a lot of scenes with Boris. Originally I thought about those as Boris being far more intelligent than he let on. But with this context I see that he is a person with almost superhuman emotional intelligence. The reason the right people were at Chernobyl, with the right equipment, and able to do the right thing is basically entirely because of him. Because of his knowledge of himself and ability to be cognizant of the motives of other people. At the end we find out he had a dim view of himself and thank goodness Legasov set him straight.

It’s an apt term, though, considering how some forms of radiation travel through the body, damaging and/or destroying any flesh or bone in its path. That’s why nuclear radiation particles (beta, gamma and neutrons in particular) are described as bullets, which drives home to those less knowledgeable that exposure is a much more serious matter than, for example, exposure to infrared or ultraviolet light.

A key point he missed is that when a neutron hits a uranium atom the splitting atom releases a new neutron. So now there are two free neutrons that can split additional atoms.

This scene is far better then i looks. First of all shcherbina ask him how it works and then the graphite wich in turns makes an appearance later on when shcherbina ask of of the Chernobyl workers why he saw graphite and tells him about the fission wich in turns make them speechless. So this scene is your could say the start of the entire serie. It shows the 2 main characters in a hostile but very equal stage. Both are best on what they do and both learns from another the entire serie. Brilliant scene

The funny thing about this is that words like "splitting" is just an abstraction to describe what really occurs - the actual physical event may be beyond our imagination and mind, for the moment anyway. You may have heard of entanglement. Now, imagine entanglement is a "tunnel through spacetime". Now imagine, when we split an atom, we actually break this tunnel between particles and what we think is the energy of the atom is rather the energy of a snapping spacetime tunnel coiling up on itself. This is just an example of how truly weird reality is, atleast from our limited perspective.
