Seong-Jin Cho is the winner of the 2015 International Chopin Competition. I would forever argue this as the best performance of this piece. And it was in a competition.. The Doppio movimento part starting from 4:44 is incredibly difficult and this dude just nails it. Many pianists "cheat" by using pedals but he uses pure technique to voice the top notes perfectly. And some rubato that fits really well to Chopin pieces. This is surely the most difficult Chopin nocturne, and also one of those pieces that sound much easier than they really are. Even the slow part in the middle is full of enormous arpeggios on both hands.
Well I like this interpretation but Pogorelich's version(2012 live) is the best for me it blew my mind when I first hear it and you. Not everyone likes it but I strongly recommend it.
I'm working on this piece and ya the doppio movimento is pretty challenging, Ive been practicing without any pedal to not "cheat" Im pretty close to having it done
Chopin may not be the inventor of this genre of music, it was John Field, an Irish composer. But he is, the greatest composer of Nocturne there is. So many Nocturnes were composed, by Debussy, Liszt, Faure, Field of course etc. but Chopin is the greatest master of them all. Take this one for example, or op 27/2. Really wonderful music.
john field came up with the genre but chopin added so much to it that it was seen as his invention . its like those old school 70s rappers that used to say verry basic rhymes compared to the greats that later made the genre what it is today .
I just listened to this nocturne again today and all of a sudden I started to tear up thinking of all the ups and downs I've had in my life and when the last notes were finished and slowly vanished I ended up with smile. That's the emotional power that I think is always imbedded in Chopin's music and that's so unique when it emerges you can't help but utter "Ah it's Chopin!"

This is definitively a complex one and some people get really crazy with it. I love this recording because it's just pure music, every sorrowful and romantic emotion is shown directly through your mind, as if you're put in a spotlight and can't escape the feeling. Simplicity is powerful, and this nocturne has such a beautiful melody, very emotional and tragic. My favorite Chopin nocturne, one of my favorites of Chopin's pieces, and also of all time from any composer.

I always hated this kind of content b/c NOTHING annoyed me so much as seeing people PAUSE 20 times to give running commentary like a sports commentator while 'listening' to music (that is not 'listening to music'). I was surprised you listened the whole way thru. This is the greatest nocturne imo! I practice this one on and off. The recapitulation naturally is the hardest part to get right. Both hands seperately is fine but bringing them together without slurring stuff in the left hand is still a struggle. Cho uses too much pedal for my taste. The more you play this like Bach and try to play legato with your hands instead of using the pedal, the better this gets. Also he totally messes up the transition back into the recapitulation and the tempo of the recapitulation. The tempo has to be in relation to each other so that the triplets organically come out of the middle part and the melody is played in the same tempo as the first time around, not faster.
