That describes my life to a tee. (Benefit: no wrinkles. Do I look 66? No one believes it.) And to all of you who think you can live "smartly" and avoid sickness/disability, you're only fooling yourself. Ask anyone over 60. I came from a "Health Nut" family. Yes, they stayed "active." Yes, they were "active" donating everything in house to a thrift shop, running around neighborhood in underwear (with no water bottle, fainting in someone's yard), leaving government checks on dresser, running into woods after a snowstorm to shake the trees ("saving them"), yelling and screaming, driving 7 years with no license. Eventually refusing to bathe, wash hands, comb hair, flush toilet. Hitting me, scratching, threatening me with a shovel; one night, even held a huge butcher knife on a police officer (white privilege - he laughed his head off.) Did anyone help me? Nooo! Kaiser was the worst, their being ambulatory, they could do things, just didn't want to. (Nothing like the adorable, doddering old darlings on tv ads!) Social Services said they don't deal with uncleanliness. Meds didn't help. DID U KNOW THAT U CAN'T FORCE SOMEONE TO SHOWER, TAKE MEDS? This went on and on. Nursing homes, adult day care don't want these types. Their endings were no different than anyone else's - in hospital beds, completely helpless.

As a young child my favorite TV show was National Geographic. I would watch so called "primitive people" who had "nothing" sing, dance and laugh while they lived in little huts made of cow dung. One tribe was losing people to lions dragging them out of their beds at night, yet, they were still happy. I made the connection that they were happy because they were living how humans are supposed to live. They're only concern was survival. They didn't have bills to pay, jobs to go to or television feeding them negativity. They just lived. Fast forward to a book I read a few years ago- Lost Connections by Joann Hari. This book confirmed everything I observed as a child. We aren't meant to live in this modern society. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It will cause a major shift in your thinking.
@FG-yl3oj

I told my boyfriend this same thing just the other day. If you look at documentaries about "primitive" groups, if they're not busy looking, prepping or cooking food, they are singing, dancing and just living. No bills and no staring at a clock to tell them they need to be somewhere. This is the living in the now that we often hear about but it eludes us. Simple living.

I wonder if this living among the lions includes modern medical treatments and supplies? Life expectancy was a lot shorter when they lived like that. I've heard that our bodies are meant to last for 150 years. It's all the unhealthy environments and ways we live that brings those numbers way down. Advances in food and medicine bring the averages up a bit.

Growing up in suburbia, many of us know how it feels to be ostracized for not following the cycle: HS, College, Career, Debt. However, that cycle is only maintained to please other people, not yourself. If you haven't felt it yet because you're young, then you soon will. It eats at you and you know there's something wrong with the way you're viewing the world. Start doing things for you, not for your friends and parents. People really need to break out of that cycle. It's a journey, but it will benefit you as you progress through life and surround yourself with good people. Eat well, exercise, meditate, and get out and do you!

My mind was 'at peace' even though I didn't realize it back then. I just 'existed'. It seems to be impossible to ever come to that state of mind again. But hey, I still love the peace and serenity of nature. And, sometimes... I'm able to 'just exist'...it's a wonderful feeling. Thank you Tim for sharing this video. You are a gem. 😊

@@jl5034 yes, Unfortunately you are right. I think most children are conditioned out of this, if not by their parents, than by wider society. "Doing nothing" is the nut of existence that I am quietly settling into these days. I've been a long distance hiker for several years, which is basically doing nothing, but it has the guise of doing something. So my time outdoors has me ready to embrace and live "doing nothing" but I still feel a strong need to be *moving*. I find it extremely satisfying to do the physical work of walking from sunrise to sunset, while eating and being observant. However, I feel little compulsion or obligation to be "productive" or to strive beyond my basic necessities (I'm tapering down from a working career where I seriously doubt what it was all for, and suspect that I'd rather have my time back). I'm also recently pondering "detachment" as a spiritual term and seeing some connections to "doing nothing".

I'm 27, I been jobless for months and years, don't have friends, single, never had a gf, never experienced my first kiss either. This video made me feel somewhat better or okay for not doing anything. I always felt a sense of regret that everybody has a purpose, is going somewhere, doing something and I'm not.. I always felt like an outsider or an outcast like I don't belong anywhere. The only thing that I been doing for myself is gardening work as a hobby because this is the only thing I have passion for and I don't like the modern jobs where I need to be a slave and work for X or XY hours. I prefer to work on my own terms and pace because I can accomplish a lot more in fewer hours than in forced specific amount of hours. I have a lot of freedom and people are trying to make me feel bad for it. For a while I been avoiding going to the parks or to walk in nature because I thought that it is a waste of time. I always go somewhere if there is a purpose, for example: I can find black humus soil in the forests so I go to dig it up and collect that. I will try to think of more reasons to go out into the forest, I may find some resource that I need or to just explore. Edit: for some reason I can't reply to comments. I live with my family and family helps with my financial needs while I help with work. I used to have a few temporary jobs in the past, one of them helped me to earn a good amount of money which I keep hidden in case of emergency so I have financial safety in case if hard times come. I'm also a highly frugal person so I know how to manage and to save money. A while ago I discovered "minimalism" which further simplified my life, reduced my desires and made me save even more.

We are told by society to work endlessly in stress to lock ourselves in a house/apartments. Companies want good slaves who are married/have kids. After about 20 years working, I'll tell young people you should not have any loyalty to any organization, they will turn on you in a second when its convenient and fire/replace you. Also to ensure no slavery, young people dont get married and dont get a girl pregnant, make sure she takes the birth control pill daily in front of you and both wear protection. You will just condemn your new child to increasing poverty and freedomless slavery and these control/money/job trends worsen. Promote this idea in videos and social media to help prevent more young people into this new slavery.

After being dismissed from work, I’ve done nothing productive money wise since mid sept but come Jan will need to look for work. I find the days go fast even with not doing much, I wonder how I fitted work and children/home chores in my day, I was exhausted I felt it years ago. For now I enjoy the peace and have gratitude that I have all that I need thank god.

Great video Tim! I spend massive amounts of time in nature just being present in the moment. It is critical to disrupt the almost non-stop, negative energy attacks we are subjected to in this corrupted human existence. We need to reconnect with our internal, biological technology. People give all of their energy and time away for money, and wonder why most die full of regrets.

It's important to do this. I tend to go out for a walk sometimes when under stress. But I admit it feels like working out. It was nice when I had a car, so I would just drive around and enjoy the view.

Hi Tim. Just found your channel and showing my support with subscribing. Currently I am so caught up in the 'toxic' hustle culture. I am chasing monetary goals and have to admit feel so... drained. My mind is so occupied all the time. I have a very hard time doing nothing. You are giving me the advice to think about what I am doing. I need to do more of 'nothing'. I can't even thing of the last time I enjoyed being outside. I will go outside tomorrow and no 'nothing'. Thank you brother!

I’ve always been the type of person who has a lot of indoor hobbies. I really like painting, studying languages, practicing ukulele, and coding. But I recognize that I should spend more time outside even though I don’t have that same problem of getting bored when I’m inside.

Good stuff my brother. Truly helpful. This is a great video. I’ve been so conditioned to think that not working or not doing something is WRONG. Then I get the sledgehammer out and beat myself up. At 60, living mega tight on SSDI, I’m tired of the self mental abuse. 40 years of working. I’m tired of it and done but have to come to terms with it.

I've been watching your videos for a while. You have a simple, clear speaking style, rarely stutter, and have an approachable personality. Plus you talk about things that everyone can identify with. They're a joy to listen to...keep up the good work! (Best line - "there's no objective. I'm just being. I just am. It just is!")

Preach it, brother! Perfect. Couldn't have said it better. Doing "nothing" (which isn't ever nothing) is almost a lost art but I keep looking for it to revive. Whether someone can happily do "nothing" says a great deal about their character and inner maturity.

Spot on, Tim. Doing 'nothing' is what I love doing myself. It's not like I don't do things, but it is things that is necessary. Not being busy because someone else tell me to do so. We live completely wrong in modern society. Everything is getting very complex and most people has lost themeselves in order to 'keep up'. It is sick! I love your take on life. Keep it up. Thank you.

These are great observations. Also, suburban living keeps us more inside - inside our homes, or inside our SUVs, etc. When you are getting around by car, your life is inside one box, or another box. This is why I love walking, biking, etc.

You’re absolutely right… You just have to BE and that’s it. Most of us are just culturally conditioned around the environment that we are in and we mimic that state of being as if that is the correct way to be…like work and home and that’s it. Our natural existence is outside. When the sunlight hits us we get instant energy, spiritual and physical, you don’t get that from sitting indoors.

Telling someone that they need to be a 'productive member of society' as a way to shame them has the opposite effect on me. You'll never have a mutually beneficial relationship with society no matter what you do. So only work hard for your own benefit, not for a society to which you are an expendable number, consumer and worker bee.
