There is something to be discussed about how we as Black ppl steal the joy of Black kids/ppl. Celie’s Pa telling her her smile was ugly. Shug telling her she shole is ugly. Ppl in town talking bad about her clothes etc. Everyone knew what was happening to her but was concerned with her looks and making her feel bad for existing. The step father raping her yet making sure she never smiles is diabolical.

This was everything we needed! I would like to submit this review to "The Color Purple " foundation in my city. Mrs. Walker is going to love it! The revelations and breakdowns were so insightful. The church isn't a building made by man! God ordained us to be the church. I loved the part about looking around in nature and finding his peace, mercy, and grace in the small things.

This was really good. And the conversation about God…when people ask why I’m no longer religious I try to explain to them this very thing. I find God in nature and I admire the majesty of it all. I get crazy looks and told that I need to pray and strengthen my relationship with him. But focusing on nature, feeling satisfied with the way God made me, and wants me to have a fulfilled life is all that I require. I’ve always found formal religion oppressive and now I feel less restricted.

Gen X here! Your review was excellent. I remember watching the debut of this movie as a teenager and many more times since then. During the 80s, folks were soooo caught up in respectability, so much so that Alice Walker's intended message, for us to look at US, was completely missed. She was demonized as a hater of black men and a lesbian. I appreciate your thorough review because the socialization and pathology still exist!

He drove my mother and us away with his nasty cruel ways and was found clinging to life alone and died in the hospital alone. Yet and still we had to take care of his funeral arrangements and whatever he left behind including our family home that we left 20 plus years ago which is damn near falling apart.

Still stands as one of the most affecting movies I've ever watched. I now understand some of the original criticism of the movie. Mister's redemption arc is an integral part of this story and the transformation of his relationship with Celie. Imagine how much more a revolutionary movie it could have been. There are generations of black people who can recite entire scenes of this movie. Meaning we have been moved and inspired. Great review. You should turn this series into a podcast. I often listen at work.

I knew people in my family who hated him for a while after seeing it when it was first released. You know what many people claim though: if the actor emotionally impacted you that much they acted their a**** off🤷‍♀️ I personally think actors are just reaching another level of their true selves possibly unknown to the public when they perform TRULY mean and despicable roles too well. Realistically, everybody is capable of ugly behavior. But not everyone will go through with it.

(To the scene when you were discussing Suge finally receiving a hug from her daddy): I feel like that may be one of the main reasons Suge ultimately couldn’t see it for Albert. He exemplified her father. Always concerned about what his daddy or what everyone else thinks. “I need a real man…”. The opinions of others meant absolutely nothing to Suge and the way she chose to live her life. She moved through the world on passion and love. And if you couldn’t do the same the bag lady had to eventually pack her stuff and go.

I love your take on this.I had a different interpretation of “you can do what you want with her and you don’t have to feed it or clothe it.” I say that because in the book, Celie said she was told that if she keeps bleeding every month, she would get pregnant so she stopped bleeding. My interpretation of that was that the grapejuicing at such a young age could have damaged her reproductive organs taking her fertility away. I was thinking he was saying , she can’t get pregnant anymore. Either way, it was f-cked up for them to think this way.

I watched Color Purple after many years because of your awesome review. I think the girl singing in the choir could have been Shug's granddaughter. Her children would have been around the same age or older than Mister's children with his first wife. So I don't think they were as young as the singer. Or it could be that the choir singer's black did not crack. Anyway, great review. I am going to buy the audio. I read the book and loved it!

I really want to hear your take on lean on me I first watched lean on me at the age of 14 15 years old and since then I’ve watched it so many times and as an adult Mr. Joe Clark made so many sacrifices to keep these children safe and educate them and give them hope and the way he treated the adults who were supporting him they had to tell him about himself and as an adult I rock with it because he was mistreating them and yet they stayed because they cared about the kids and what he was trying to achieve at that school at the end seeing the kids graduate high school and move forward and how proud Mr Clark was of the youngest in a cap and all the kids
